When My Profile is set to Private, Steam friends cannot view the normal profile details covered by that setting. However, your profile name and avatar remain visible, and game-specific or separately published information can still reveal limited activity. To hide your library, achievements, playtime, wishlist and current-game status through Steam’s usual profile surfaces, check Game Details as well.

Steam’s profile category covers the summary, friends list, badges, level, showcases, comments and groups. A private profile is therefore not the same as deleting your account or making it impossible to find. Someone may still reach the profile page and see a private-profile notice instead of its restricted sections.

The exact presentation can vary between Steam’s browser, desktop and mobile clients, so treat the table as the privacy result rather than a promise that every interface uses identical wording.
Private versus Friends Only
Friends Only is usually the better compromise if you want accepted friends to see social information while blocking strangers. Steam-community reports indicate that the available Game Details choices follow the parent profile setting: a Friends Only profile can generally use Friends Only Game Details, while a fully Private profile restricts that category to Private. This relationship is reported by the community rather than stated as a current formal policy, so check the controls shown on your account.

How to make a Steam profile private
- Open Steam Community’s direct settings page: https://steamcommunity.com/my/edit/settings.
- Alternatively, open your profile, choose Edit Profile, then My Privacy Settings or Privacy Settings. Labels can differ by client.
- Set My Profile to Private.
- Review Game Details, Friends List, Inventory and activity-related controls individually.
- Save or confirm the change if Steam displays a save control.
- Check the result from a logged-out browser or another account rather than relying only on your own view.
How to hide games, current activity and playtime
Game library and current title
Steam says Game Details governs owned games, wishlisted games, achievements, playtime and whether others see you as in-game, including the title being played. Set it to Private if you do not want friends to receive those details through the normal profile or friend-facing display. Steam’s privacy announcement explains the category.
Total playtime
Steam also offers a separate option to hide total playtime when other game details remain visible. Use that additional control if you choose Friends Only or otherwise leave Game Details available.

One game versus the whole account
Marking an individual game as Private is a narrower choice than making your profile or Game Details private. It can hide selected titles without changing every profile section, but it does not replace the broader privacy controls.
What a private profile does not hide
Name, avatar and account discovery
Your profile name and avatar remain visible to people who encounter you on Steam. Private limits profile data; it does not provide total anonymity.

Multiplayer and matchmaking information
A game, lobby or server can expose information independently of your profile page. Steam Support notes that your Steam ID may be visible to other players on the same server when a title uses Steam matchmaking: Steam Support. Do not assume that Private, Invisible or Offline are interchangeable controls.
Community content posted elsewhere
A private profile does not necessarily erase reviews, screenshots, artwork, guides, Workshop items, discussions, Community Hub posts or comments left on another user’s profile. Review each item’s own visibility. Steam’s Privacy Agreement distinguishes profile information from data used by games and community services, while Steamworks documentation notes that profile data may be unavailable when privacy settings restrict exposure.

Information people already saw
Changing privacy prevents or limits future visibility through Steam’s profile surfaces; it cannot make friends forget a library, play session or activity-feed entry they already observed. External integrations may also retain information they collected previously.

- Confirm that My Profile actually shows Private on Steam’s privacy settings page.
- Check Game Details separately; changing only the profile category may not produce the game-library result you want.
- Identify the item: inventory, an individual game, a review, screenshot, showcase or community post may have its own visibility rule.
- Check whether the information comes from a game server, matchmaking lobby, chat, invitation or another player’s public profile rather than your profile page.
- Test while logged out or from another account.
- Allow Steam pages and activity feeds time to update before treating a stale display as a failed change.
Third-party trackers are not proof that private data should be available: Steamworks says data can be withheld when privacy settings prevent exposure.
