Nearly every modern Xbox controller works with a Windows PC, but “wireless” does not mean one universal connection. Current Xbox Wireless Controllers, Elite Series 2 models and the Adaptive Controller support Windows through USB; many also support Bluetooth or Xbox Wireless. Xbox One Bluetooth support depends on the hardware revision, while Xbox 360 wireless pads require a dedicated Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows.

Microsoft’s product pages confirm Windows support for the current Xbox Wireless Controller, Elite Series 2, Elite Series 2 Core and Adaptive Controller: Xbox Wireless Controller, Elite Series 2, Elite Series 2 Core and Adaptive Controller.
The three wireless systems you must distinguish
Bluetooth
Bluetooth is the convenient option built into many laptops and desktops. The current Xbox Wireless Controller and later Xbox One revisions support it. Early Xbox One controllers and all Xbox 360 wireless controllers do not. Your PC needs built-in Bluetooth or a USB Bluetooth adapter, and Bluetooth may not expose every headset or accessory feature.
Xbox Wireless
Xbox Wireless is Microsoft’s separate proprietary protocol. Compatible controllers can use it on a PC with built-in Xbox Wireless support or an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows. A Bluetooth dongle cannot replace that adapter.

- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
USB
USB is the most dependable choice and avoids pairing issues. Use a data-capable cable, not a charge-only lead. USB is also the preferred connection for firmware updates and configuration in the Xbox Accessories app.
Current Xbox Wireless Controller
The current Series X|S-generation Xbox Wireless Controller is the simplest all-purpose PC recommendation. Microsoft lists it for Windows 10/11, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Android and iOS, with USB-C, Bluetooth and Xbox Wireless connections: official specifications.
- Use USB-C for immediate wired play.
- Use Bluetooth for a laptop or desktop with compatible Bluetooth hardware.
- Use Xbox Wireless when you need that protocol’s accessory support or Bluetooth is unreliable.
- It normally uses two AA batteries; a rechargeable pack is optional, and battery life varies with use and accessories.
- The 3.5-mm headset and other accessories can behave differently over Bluetooth, USB and Xbox Wireless.
Microsoft notes that button mapping in the Windows Xbox Accessories app requires a compatible USB-C cable, and that not every version includes the same expansion-port hardware.
Elite Series 2 and Series 2 Core
Elite Wireless Controller Series 2
Elite Series 2 supports Bluetooth, the included USB cable and an Xbox Wireless Adapter on Windows 10/11. Microsoft lists Windows 7 or later, but Windows 7 and 8.1 require USB and do not support all functions: Elite Series 2 specifications.

Rank #2
- Versatile compatibility: supports Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One X/S consoles and PC Win10 and above (including the game platform Steam).
- Precise control: features Hall joysticks and Hall triggers for a comfortable feeling, long service life and improved game accuracy.
- Plug and Play Convenience: Wired USB connection (removable) for easy setup and instant play without the need for additional drivers.
- Customizable experience: Includes 2 custom backbuttons that allow users to eliminate false triggers and improve their gaming experience.
- Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.
Its PC-relevant features include four rear paddles, adjustable thumbstick tension, trigger locks, sensitivity curves, remappable controls, profiles, a rechargeable internal battery and a 3.5-mm headset jack. These controls are worthwhile for competitive players; they add complexity and cost for someone who only needs a standard gamepad.
Elite Series 2 Core
The Core model retains the Elite controller’s principal controls and the same USB-C, Bluetooth and Xbox Wireless PC options. Its difference is the package contents: it does not include the complete accessory set supplied with the regular Elite bundle. Confirm the current box contents before buying: Elite Series 2 Core specifications.
Xbox Adaptive Controller
The Xbox Adaptive Controller is a Windows 10/11 accessibility hub rather than a conventional handheld pad. It connects by USB or Bluetooth and provides nineteen 3.5-mm ports plus two USB 2.0 ports for external switches, joysticks and other inputs. Profiles and remapping are available through Xbox Accessories: Adaptive Controller specifications.
The controller itself is PC-compatible, but a complete setup is individual and may require additional switches, mounts or joysticks. Microsoft’s Adaptive Joystick has its own Windows 11 x64 and software requirements: Adaptive Joystick requirements.

- GameSir Nexus App: The G7 Pro is compatible with the upgraded GameSir Nexus app, which brings a significant upgrade over the original. It introduces powerful new features such as gyro settings, stick curve adjustments, and button-to-mouse mapping, giving you deeper customization and more control than ever before.
Xbox One controllers: identify the revision
“Xbox One Wireless Controller” covers multiple hardware revisions. Later revisions can pair with Windows over Bluetooth; earlier ones cannot. All can generally use USB, and non-Bluetooth models can use an Xbox Wireless Adapter.
- Look for the controller’s exact model or revision in its documentation or listing.
- Do not assume a Micro-USB-equipped Xbox One pad has Bluetooth.
- If Bluetooth is absent, choose USB or the Xbox Wireless Adapter instead.
Microsoft’s Windows pairing instructions explicitly cover Xbox One Wireless Controllers and the current Xbox Wireless Controller: Windows pairing guidance.
Xbox 360 controllers
Wired Xbox 360
A wired Xbox 360 controller can generally work over USB when Windows has the compatible driver and the game supports XInput. It is a sensible “use what you already own” option, but a new buyer gets broader current support from a newer Xbox controller.
Wireless Xbox 360
Xbox 360 wireless controllers do not use ordinary Bluetooth. They require the dedicated Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows. The receiver is not interchangeable with a Bluetooth dongle or an Xbox Wireless Adapter. Microsoft’s setup reference is Xbox 360 controller-for-Windows setup.

How to connect an Xbox controller to Windows
USB
- Connect the controller with a data-capable USB cable (USB-C for current and Elite Core models; the controller’s original connector for older models).
- Wait for Windows to detect the device and load its driver.
- Launch a controller-compatible game.
- Open Xbox Accessories if you need firmware, remapping or profiles.
- If the game does not respond, test Windows’ game-controller panel or another known-compatible title.
Bluetooth on Windows 11
- Turn on the controller and hold its Pair/Connect button until the Xbox logo flashes.
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Add device, then Everything else.
- Choose Xbox Wireless Controller.
Bluetooth on Windows 10
- Put the controller in pairing mode.
- Open Settings → Devices → Bluetooth & other devices.
- Select Add Bluetooth or other device, then Everything else.
- Select Xbox Wireless Controller.
Xbox Wireless Adapter
- Plug the Xbox Wireless Adapter into the PC and let Windows install its driver.
- Press the adapter’s pairing button.
- Turn on the controller and press its Pair button.
- Wait until the Xbox logo stops flashing, then test it in a game.
- Use Xbox Accessories for firmware updates when the app recognizes the device.
Do not substitute an Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver or generic Bluetooth adapter; they use different technologies.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When Windows sees the controller but the game does not
Connection, input-API support and game support are separate questions. Most Xbox pads present XInput, which supplies familiar Xbox prompts and standard trigger and stick behavior. Older games may support only DirectInput, may have controller support disabled, or may require a restart after the controller is connected.
- Check the game’s controller setting and test another controller-compatible game.
- In Steam, try the title with Steam Input enabled and disabled; other remappers can also conflict.
- A PlayStation-style prompt does not necessarily mean the Xbox controller failed; some games simply display a fixed prompt set.
- Cloud gaming adds separate title, region, device, subscription and network requirements. Xbox Cloud Gaming requires a supported controller and, where applicable, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate; see the Elite product information at Microsoft.
Features that can differ on PC
Headsets and chat
A 3.5-mm jack does not guarantee identical headset behavior on every connection. Bluetooth implementations may omit controller-routed audio, while USB, Xbox Wireless, Windows sound settings and the game’s voice-chat device selection can produce different results.

Rumble and impulse triggers
Basic vibration is widely supported, but impulse triggers and other enhanced effects depend on the game, connection method, engine, firmware and XInput support.
Remapping and profiles
Xbox Accessories changes controller-level settings and profiles on supported models in Windows 10/11. Steam Input is a separate, often per-game translation and remapping layer. A compatible USB data cable may be required for app configuration.
Which controller should you use?
- Best for most PC players: the current Xbox Wireless Controller, because it combines USB-C, Bluetooth, Xbox Wireless and broad Windows game support.
- Best for competitive features: Elite Series 2, if paddles, trigger locks, adjustable sticks and profiles justify the premium.
- Best lower-entry Elite option: Elite Series 2 Core, if you do not need the full accessory bundle immediately.
- Best for accessibility: Xbox Adaptive Controller, when external switches or other adaptive inputs are needed.
- Best for a desk setup: any supported wired controller, especially if you want to avoid batteries and wireless troubleshooting.
- Best use for Xbox 360 hardware: keep an existing wired pad, or buy a verified receiver for an existing wireless one; it is not the simplest new purchase.
Troubleshooting checklist
It does not appear in Bluetooth
- Confirm that the exact controller revision supports Bluetooth.
- Disconnect it from a console or another device, power-cycle it and hold Pair until the logo flashes.
- Remove an old Xbox controller entry from Windows and pair again.
- Check Bluetooth drivers, battery level and nearby devices.
- Try USB; use Xbox Wireless Adapter for a compatible non-Bluetooth Xbox Wireless controller.
Windows detects it, but the game does not
- Verify that the title supports controllers and that controller input is enabled.
- Restart the game after connecting the pad.
- Test with another game and temporarily disable conflicting remappers.
- Try USB instead of Bluetooth.
No headset audio
- Check Windows playback and recording devices and the game’s chat settings.
- Try USB or Xbox Wireless instead of Bluetooth.
- Test another headset and update firmware through Xbox Accessories.
Xbox Accessories cannot update or configure it
- Connect directly with a data-capable cable and avoid an unpowered hub.
- Update Windows, restart the app and reconnect the controller.
- Check whether the model and Windows version support the requested feature.
Xbox 360 wireless pairing fails
A normal Bluetooth adapter cannot solve this. Use an Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows and the appropriate driver.
