Pokémon GO players have reported Rare Candy as an occasional possible reward from opening Gifts, but it is not guaranteed and there is no verified current drop rate. Treat Gifts as a bonus chance, not a dependable way to farm Rare Candy.
How Rare Candy can come from a Gift
Ordinary Gifts are collected by spinning PokéStop or Gym Photo Discs, and a Buddy Pokémon may also bring Gifts from nearby PokéStops. You send a Gift to a friend; the recipient opens it and gets its contents. You cannot open your own ordinary Gifts to claim their items. Each Gift also includes a postcard showing where it was collected. Niantic’s Sending & Receiving Gifts guide lists items such as Poké Balls, Potions and Berries, as well as Pokémon Eggs, but does not specifically list Rare Candy.

A community research discussion traces Rare Candy in Gifts to a Niantic announcement in April 2022 and describes it as an unusual reward. That is historical secondary evidence that it has been possible, not confirmation of its current odds or availability. Neither Niantic’s item guide nor its current Gift guide provides a Gift-specific Rare Candy rate. No percentage or guaranteed quantity is established. The community discussion is useful context, but it cannot establish a present-day drop rate.
What Rare Candy does
Rare Candy can be converted into Candy for a Pokémon you choose. Rare Candy XL similarly becomes Candy XL for that Pokémon. The item guide explains these effects, but does not say that either item is a regular Gift reward. Niantic’s item definitions therefore clarify what Rare Candy is for, not how often Gifts contain it.
#1 Best Overall
- The packaging is Japanese, but item works the same as the US version.
- Catch Pokémon and track your rest rhythm with the Pokémon GO Plus + accessory!
- Keep track of your sleep with the press of a button
- Press and hold the central button on the Pokémon GO Plus + accessory and place it by your pillow to track your rest rhythm on the Pokémon Sleep app
- There’s a Pikachu within your Pokémon GO Plus + that can sing you lullabies and act as your morning alarm; Pikachu grows friendlier the more you sleep, unlocking even more sounds!
Should you open Gifts to get Rare Candy?
Open Gifts for their range of useful items and the chance of an occasional surprise, but do not rely on them as a Rare Candy farming method. Check current in-game event details for time-limited rewards: official Pokémon GO event news has cited Field Research as a way to earn Rare Candy during a particular event, which is an event-specific example rather than a permanent guarantee. The event announcement does not establish a universal current method or promise that every Field Research task awards Rare Candy.
In short, a recipient may get Rare Candy from a Gift, but the official Gift guide does not currently confirm it or publish odds. Sending Gifts does not let you claim their contents yourself.
