Mojang describes a hopper as picking up items that fall onto it from above; that is different from pulling items out of an inventory above it. A hopper minecart may behave differently, but its through-block behavior depends on the game edition and version.
What a regular hopper can—and cannot—collect
A regular hopper collects dropped item entities that fall onto it from above. Mojang’s official hopper overview does not describe it collecting dropped items through a full solid block. So if an item lands on a solid block covering the hopper, do not expect the hopper beneath it to pick that item up.

Hoppers also transfer items to and from containers, which is a separate mechanic:
- A hopper can pull stored items from a container above it.
- It can push its stored items into a container below it and connect to other containers.
- Items dropped into the world are not stored in a container, so container extraction does not mean a hopper can pull those items through a block.
Mojang’s article says a hopper stores collected items in a five-stack inventory. A redstone signal locks the hopper, stopping collection and item transfer until the signal is removed.

Hopper minecarts are a separate case
A Minecraft Wiki result reports that a hopper minecart can collect item entities through one layer of solid blocks. That claim is not confirmed by Mojang’s hopper overview, and the available result does not establish which Java or Bedrock versions it applies to. Treat it as a possibility rather than a guaranteed mechanic for every current build.
If a farm or storage design depends on a hopper minecart collecting through a block, test the exact arrangement in the edition and version you play before building around it. Do not assume a regular hopper will work the same way.
Check the block and item path in your build
Block shape and placement matter. A partial block may leave room for an item to fall or move into a hopper’s collection area, while a full solid block can obstruct that path. Mojang’s overview does not provide a block-by-block compatibility chart, so verify the actual geometry rather than assuming every block behaves alike.
Quick Recap
Quick troubleshooting
- Dropped items sit on a full block above a regular hopper: the hopper is not described as collecting them through that block. Give the items a clear path onto the hopper or use a design tested for your edition.
- The hopper is not collecting or transferring: check whether a redstone signal is locking it.
- The items are stored in a container above: a hopper can pull from a container above; this is inventory transfer, not pickup of dropped items through a block.
- You are using a hopper minecart: verify the through-block setup in your game version; the cited community result does not settle all edition and version differences.
