In modern World of Warcraft, Horde and Alliance players can team up for supported instanced activities, but they remain unfriendly in the outdoor world, and Blizzard’s cited rules do not establish shared credit for ordinary outdoor quests. In World of Warcraft: Forever, the answer is stricter: the factions cannot group together.
First, check which version of WoW you mean
World of Warcraft: Forever
Blizzard’s September 21, 2026 announcement says Horde and Alliance characters cannot group together in WoW: Forever. It also says characters on different rulesets cannot group for the activities covered by the announcement. If your friends want to group and quest together in Forever, choose the same faction and ruleset when creating characters. Blizzard’s WoW: Forever announcement describes the separation as a way to preserve the experience’s faction boundaries.
Modern World of Warcraft
The modern game permits cross-faction parties for certain activities, especially organized instances. That permission does not make the outdoor world faction-neutral: opposite-faction party members remain unfriendly outdoors, so do not plan on freely questing side by side as a friendly group. Blizzard’s cross-faction play preview explains the distinction between outdoor faction status and cooperation inside supported instances.
What cross-faction play allows in the modern game
Blizzard’s 9.2.5 notes describe cross-faction premade groups for Mythic dungeons, raids, and rated arena or rated battleground activities. Group Finder listings for those activities can be open to both factions unless the group leader restricts applicants. Players can directly invite an opposite-faction player if they are BattleTag or Real ID friends, or members of a cross-faction WoW Community. These are the rules described in the 2022 notes; check the current activity’s in-game requirements before organizing a run. Read Blizzard’s 9.2.5 notes.

Random matchmade activities are different. The same notes say that activities such as Heroic dungeons, Skirmishes, and Random Battlegrounds remain same-faction. Being in a cross-faction party does not override that matchmaking boundary.
Can you share ordinary outdoor quest progress?
Do not assume so. The cited Blizzard rules explain cross-faction cooperation in instances and the factions’ outdoor status, but do not confirm that opposite-faction party members can complete ordinary outdoor quests together or share quest credit. If a particular questline is your goal, check its current requirements and test the specific quest in game rather than relying on the fact that you can form a party for an instance.

Outdoor status, War Mode, and guilds
Opposite-faction party members remain unfriendly to one another outdoors. In War Mode they are hostile instead. Party chat can still be used, but the party itself does not remove the faction boundary in the open world.
Cross-faction guild membership does not change that limitation. Blizzard’s 2023 guild announcement says opposite-faction guildmates can play together in instances while remaining unfriendly outdoors—or hostile in War Mode. See Blizzard’s guild announcement.

Older instance exclusions are patch-specific
Blizzard’s 2022 patch notes listed Trial of the Champion, Trial of the Crusader, Vault of Archavon, Icecrown Citadel, Baradin Hold, Siege of Boralus, Battle of Dazar’alor, and Darkmaul Citadel as legacy instances that were not cross-faction at that update. That is a dated list, not a reliable statement of the current exclusions. Check the instance’s present rules before making plans.
