Yes—Modern World of Warcraft lets Horde and Alliance players cooperate in many activities. Cross-faction guilds, premade dungeons, raids, rated arenas, rated battlegrounds, Torghast, and some questing are supported. The biggest boundary is the outdoor world: opposite-faction guildmates remain Unfriendly there, or Hostile when War Mode is enabled. WoW Classic has substantially tighter restrictions.
What “playing together” means in Modern WoW
Modern WoW no longer treats the faction divide as an absolute barrier. A Horde character and an Alliance character can be in the same guild, organize a party, and enter supported group content together. Once they are inside an eligible instance, the game treats the group as cooperative rather than as opposing factions.

Blizzard described the instance behavior this way in its Development Preview: Cross-Faction Instances: “Upon entering a dungeon, raid, or rated PvP match, however, all members will be friendly and able to assist each other in combat, trade loot, earn shared achievements, and otherwise fully cooperate the same way members of the same faction have always been able to.”

Which activities support Horde–Alliance groups?

Blizzard’s cross-faction overview specifically lists Normal, Heroic, Mythic, and Mythic+ dungeons, raids, rated arena and rated battleground groups, and Torghast as activities available through Premade Groups. Blizzard Support also describes broader Modern WoW functionality, including questing together, dungeon and battleground queues, normal and heroic raiding, and cross-realm/faction guilds since The War Within pre-patch. Because queue eligibility changes by mode and patch, the Group Finder is the final check for a particular activity.
How to run a dungeon, raid, or rated match together
Use a premade listing when you need the most reliable path
- Form a party with the Horde and Alliance characters you want to play with.
- Open the in-game Group Finder and select Premade Groups.
- Choose the relevant category, such as Dungeons, Raids, or rated PvP, then create or browse a listing.
- When applying to a listing, check that the leader has not limited applications to one faction. Blizzard’s Shadowlands 9.2.5 rules allowed listings for Mythic dungeons, raids, and rated arena or rated battleground groups to accept both factions, while also giving the leader a same-faction restriction.
- Enter the instance after the group is assembled. In supported content, the members become friendly for the duration of the activity and can fight, trade loot, and earn shared achievements together.
Premade groups are the clearest officially documented route because the party is assembled manually rather than assigned by an automated queue. They are especially useful for Mythic, Mythic+, raids, and rated PvP, where players commonly choose their own teammates anyway.
Check the automated queue before promising a run
Queue rules are not identical across every activity. Blizzard Support’s Modern WoW summary describes the ability to queue for dungeons and battlegrounds with cross-faction players, but Blizzard’s launch documentation focused on Premade Group Finder support. A feature that worked in one expansion, patch, or mode may not behave identically after a systems update.

Before you invite a friend, open the current queue window and test the exact activity. If the mixed-faction party is accepted, the tool will let you queue; if it is not, use a premade listing or another supported mode instead. This check is more dependable than assuming that a dungeon, battleground, or special event follows the same rules as Mythic+ or rated PvP.
Cross-faction guilds: what works and what does not
Modern WoW supports guilds containing both Horde and Alliance characters. Guild members can communicate and organize communal activities, then play together inside supported instances. This is useful for friends who want one roster, one guild chat, and one progression group without transferring every character to the same faction.
The guild does not erase faction identity in the outdoor world. Blizzard’s cross-faction guild announcement states: “Opposite-faction guildmates can only play communally inside instances; they’ll still be considered Unfriendly to each other (or Hostile in War Mode) in the outdoor world.”

In practical terms, guild membership does not make every outdoor interaction friendly. You may be able to quest in the same area, but you should expect faction restrictions to affect targeting, combat, travel, and other open-world interactions. War Mode is stricter still: the relationship becomes Hostile, so a mixed-faction guild is not a guarantee of safe cooperation while those characters are flagged for world PvP.

Yes, Modern WoW supports questing together, according to Blizzard Support’s current Modern WoW summary. You can travel through the world as a party and work on compatible objectives, but questing is less uniform than entering an instance.
- Different factions can be placed in different phases or story states.
- A quest may be available to one character but not the other.
- Shared credit depends on the objective and the game’s normal group-quest rules.
- Outdoor faction status still applies even when both characters belong to the same guild.
For a guaranteed cooperative session, move into a supported dungeon, raid, or rated match. For open-world play, compare the quest objectives first and expect occasional separation caused by phasing or faction-specific content.

Why can’t we queue for the same dungeon?
The activity may not support mixed-faction automation
Cross-faction support is not a single switch that applies to every queue. Blizzard has explicitly documented premade support for several dungeon, raid, and rated-PvP categories, while automated queues can vary. If the queue button is disabled or the party is rejected, the mode may require same-faction characters or may have changed in the current patch.
The group listing may be faction-restricted
For supported Premade Group Finder activities, the leader can restrict a listing to same-faction applicants. Join a different listing or ask the leader to allow both factions.
You may be mixing Modern WoW and Classic rules
Characters in WoW Classic do not inherit Modern WoW’s cross-faction systems. Confirm that every player is on the same game version before troubleshooting the group.

The activity may be outside the documented categories
Normal, Heroic, Mythic, Mythic+, raids, rated arena, rated battlegrounds, and Torghast are the clearest documented categories. A time-limited event, special queue, or newly introduced mode may have separate restrictions. Read the current eligibility text in the queue or Premade Group Finder rather than relying on an older guide.
Modern WoW versus WoW Classic

“WoW Classic” covers more than one product and rules can differ among Classic versions. The documented Classic Progression limitations are the safe baseline: arena and battleground queues may work, but cross-realm dungeon groups and entering raids through cross-realm parties do not. Do not use a Modern WoW guide to predict Classic behavior.
Outdoor faction limits and War Mode
The faction conflict remains meaningful outside instances. A Horde character and an Alliance character can belong to one guild and cooperate in a dungeon, then return to an outdoor relationship that is not friendly. In normal outdoor play, opposite-faction guildmates are Unfriendly. With War Mode active, they are Hostile.
This distinction explains why a cross-faction group can appear to “stop working” after leaving an instance. Instance rules temporarily make the party cooperative; they do not permanently change the characters’ faction alignment. Plan travel, open-world objectives, and world-PvP activities with that separation in mind.
A practical decision guide
Choose a premade group when
- You are running Mythic or Mythic+ dungeons.
- You need a mixed-faction raid team.
- You are forming a rated arena or rated battleground roster.
- An automated queue has rejected the party.
- You want to see the listing’s faction restrictions before committing.
Try the automated queue when
- The current queue window explicitly accepts your mixed-faction party.
- You are playing a dungeon or battleground mode covered by the current patch’s rules.
- You are willing to switch to a premade listing if the queue blocks the group.
Plan separately when
- You are relying on unrestricted outdoor cooperation.
- War Mode is active and the characters are treated as Hostile.
- One player is on Classic and the other is on Modern WoW.
- Story phasing or faction-specific quests put the characters in different versions of an area.
How to verify the rule after a patch
- Identify the exact game version: Modern WoW, Classic Progression, or another Classic product.
- Identify the exact activity and difficulty, rather than saying only “dungeons” or “PvP.”
- Open the current Group Finder or queue window and inspect whether the mixed-faction party is eligible.
- If using Premade Groups, read the listing restrictions and confirm that the leader has not selected same-faction applicants only.
- Test the party before committing to a long session, especially after an expansion pre-patch or major systems update.
Blizzard has changed faction systems across expansions, so a dated guide can be correct for one patch and wrong for another. The current in-game tool is the authoritative check for the mode you are trying to play.
