Can I Connect Bluetooth Headphones to Xbox One? A Comprehensive Guide

Xbox One does not directly pair with ordinary Bluetooth headphones, but four practical alternatives provide game audio—and, with the right equipment, party chat.

Not directly. Xbox One does not provide native console-menu pairing for ordinary Bluetooth headphones or earbuds. AirPods, Galaxy Buds, Bose, Sony and Beats Bluetooth models will not appear as normal Xbox audio devices. To use headphones, choose an Xbox-compatible wireless headset, connect wired headphones to the controller, attach a Bluetooth transmitter to the controller, or pair the headphones with a compatible television.

Why ordinary Bluetooth headphones do not pair with Xbox One

The Xbox One console uses Xbox Wireless for compatible console headsets rather than ordinary Bluetooth audio pairing. A Microsoft Community moderator states that Xbox One does not provide Bluetooth functionality for headset pairing: Microsoft Community.

Do not confuse three separate technologies:

  • Bluetooth: commonly used by phones, PCs and televisions.
  • Xbox Wireless: Microsoft’s console accessory protocol.
  • Controller Bluetooth: a controller’s ability to connect to supported PCs or mobile devices; it is not a universal Bluetooth-audio bridge for the console.

Therefore, putting Bluetooth headphones into pairing mode will not make them appear in Xbox One’s normal audio-device menus. Bluetooth 5.x support in the headphones does not change that console limitation.

Connection methods compared

Method Game audio Xbox party chat Microphone Latency and effort
Xbox-compatible wireless headset Yes Usually yes Usually yes Low latency; easiest wireless option, but the exact model must support Xbox One
Headphones wired to controller Yes Usually yes with a compatible microphone Usually yes Very low latency; requires a cable
Bluetooth transmitter on controller Yes Often unavailable or unreliable Depends on transmitter, headset and wiring Extra adapter and possible Bluetooth delay
Bluetooth through television Yes Typically no Typically no Xbox chat path TV-dependent and may add processing delay
Remote play device Yes, through the phone, tablet or PC Depends on the remote-play setup Depends on that device and app Additional network and audio-routing delay

Method 1: Use an Xbox-compatible wireless headset

Look for explicit wording such as Xbox One compatible, Xbox Wireless, Designed for Xbox or an Xbox-specific USB transmitter. “Wireless,” “Bluetooth,” Windows compatibility or PlayStation support alone is not enough. Some Xbox and PlayStation versions are different products.

YOCOWOCO Bluetooth 5.2 Wireless Audio Adapter for Xbox Controllers
  • 【OLED Display and Effortless Device Information Access】 The screen simplifies pairing the Microsoft Xbox wireless adapter with all Bluetooth headphones, earbuds. It can intuitively display volume, codec format, mic status, and paired Bluetooth devices.⚠️ Important Pairing Tip:Pairing requires holding both Vol+ & Vol- simultaneously until "Searching" appears.
  • 【aptX Low Latency】The codec ensures synchronized audio, stepping you into the world of wireless gaming with our Xbox One Bluetooth adapter. Low latency requires your headphones to also support this technology.
  • 【Wide Compatibility】The Xbox audio adapter is designed for Xbox One, Series X, Series S, and Elite Series 2 Wireless Controllers with 3.5mm audio jack. It does not support the first-generation Xbox controller and the Elite 1 controller.
  • 【Upgraded Tech】Powered directly by the controller, the Xbox headset adapter delivers low energy consumption. It further conserves power by automatically dimming the screen after 10 seconds of inactivity. This design is enhanced by two indicator lights, giving quick feedback on the adapter and mic status.
  • 【Note】Even after the transmitter is powered off, the mic remains active when the mute switch is leftward. Sliding it right activates the mute indicator light, disabling the mic. The mic can function independently without paired headphones. Additionally, the adapter doesn't support the microphone of Bluetooth headhones.

Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless Headset is listed for Xbox One. Its console connection uses Xbox Wireless; its separate Bluetooth function is for PCs and mobile devices. Microsoft lists Bluetooth 5.3, A2DP/HFP/HSP profiles, SBC support and up to 20 hours of battery life as specifications for that headset, not for Xbox One’s console Bluetooth.

  1. Turn on the Xbox One.
  2. Turn on the headset and select its Xbox pairing mode, following its manual.
  3. Press the console pairing button if the model uses the standard Xbox pairing process.
  4. Wait for the headset and console to connect.
  5. Open Xbox audio controls and confirm game/chat output, microphone mute and balance.
  6. Install any available headset firmware update using the manufacturer’s app or instructions.

Button locations and indicator patterns vary by model. A headset can support Bluetooth for a phone while using Xbox Wireless for the console; that does not make the console a Bluetooth receiver.

Method 2: Plug headphones into the controller

Controllers with a 3.5 mm jack

  1. Turn on the console and controller.
  2. Insert the headset plug into the controller’s 3.5 mm port.
  3. Open the Xbox guide and open the audio or volume controls.
  4. Adjust headset volume, game/chat balance and microphone mute as needed.
  5. Test game sound and party chat separately.

Microsoft’s Xbox Stereo Headset is designed for the controller’s 3.5 mm jack and is listed as compatible with Xbox One.

Controllers without a 3.5 mm jack

Some original Xbox One controllers lack the round jack on the bottom edge. Those controllers need the Xbox One Stereo Headset Adapter, another compatible audio adapter, or a newer controller with an integrated jack. This is a controller-generation issue, not a difference between Xbox One, One S, One X and All-Digital Edition consoles.

Method 3: Attach a Bluetooth transmitter to the controller

This is the main way to reuse existing Bluetooth headphones without buying an Xbox headset. Buy a Bluetooth transmitter with a 3.5 mm input or plug; a Bluetooth receiver is the opposite device and will not send controller audio to headphones.

  1. Plug the transmitter into the controller’s headset jack.
  2. Charge it or connect its power source.
  3. Put the transmitter into pairing mode.
  4. Put the headphones into pairing mode.
  5. Wait for the devices to connect.
  6. Set Xbox headset volume and chat controls where available, then test audio.

The transmitter converts the controller’s analog headset output; it does not add native Bluetooth support to the Xbox One. Basic models are transmit-only, so they provide listening but no microphone return channel. Two-way products still may not deliver reliable Xbox party chat because compatibility, four-pole wiring and control support vary.

Skull & Co. AudioBox: Bluetooth 5.0 Wireless Audio Transmitter Adapter Low Latency for Xbox (XB1/XSX/XSS/Elite2) Controllers- Black
  • High fidelity low latency codecs - Ensures audio sync, enhances gaming performance
  • Compatibility - Works with most Bluetooth headphones.
  • Stable performance - Uninterrupted play with your favorite wireless headphones
  • Built-in Mic - Supports voice chat independently without connecting a headphone (works same as PS5 controller)
  • Powered directly by controllers - Uses less than 1W battery power
  • Ordinary SBC Bluetooth devices can introduce noticeable delay.
  • The adapter remains attached to the controller and may make it less convenient.
  • Volume, mute, microphone monitoring and spatial-audio controls may not behave like those on a native Xbox headset.
  • For competitive play or dependable chat, wired controller audio or Xbox Wireless is safer.

Secondary guidance describes this controller-mounted 3.5 mm approach for AirPods and similar products: Windows Central.

Method 4: Pair the headphones with the television

If the TV supports Bluetooth audio, leave the Xbox connected by HDMI and pair the headphones with the TV:

  1. Open the television’s Bluetooth or audio-output settings.
  2. Put the headphones into pairing mode.
  3. Select them in the TV’s device list.
  4. Set the TV output to the Bluetooth headphones.

This normally supplies private game audio only. Pairing a headset with the TV does not usually make its microphone an Xbox party-chat microphone. TVs also differ: Bluetooth may disable speakers, optical output or HDMI ARC/eARC, and processing can add delay. If the TV has no Bluetooth, a transmitter connected to its optical, 3.5 mm or RCA output may work, subject to the TV’s output behavior.

Why a generic USB Bluetooth dongle usually fails

Xbox One does not generally treat arbitrary USB Bluetooth adapters as universal audio receivers. A PC dongle may require drivers or operating-system support unavailable on the console. “Bluetooth 5.0” or “works on Windows” is not proof of Xbox compatibility. Microsoft Community guidance warns that ordinary USB Bluetooth dongles are not dependable for this purpose: Microsoft Community.

A USB device can work when it is an Xbox-specific transmitter and the manufacturer explicitly lists Xbox One support. Many such products use a proprietary 2.4 GHz link rather than Bluetooth.

Can Bluetooth headphones handle Xbox party chat?

  • Direct console Bluetooth: no.
  • TV Bluetooth: generally game audio only.
  • Controller transmitter: microphone support is uncertain and often absent.
  • Wired controller headset: usually the simplest route for both audio and chat.
  • Xbox-compatible wireless headset: the best integrated option, provided the exact model lists Xbox chat support.
  • Remote play: headphones connect to the phone, tablet or PC, so the setup is no longer direct-console audio and may add routing or network delay.

Troubleshooting by symptom

No pairing or no device found

  • Confirm the headset is Xbox-compatible rather than Bluetooth-only.
  • Check that it is not still paired to a phone, PC or TV.
  • For a USB product, verify Xbox One support for the exact model and transmitter.
  • Power-cycle the Xbox and headset, then repeat the manufacturer’s pairing procedure.

Sound but no microphone

  • The transmitter may be transmit-only.
  • TV Bluetooth normally has no return path to Xbox chat.
  • The headset may be in ordinary Bluetooth mode instead of Xbox Wireless mode.
  • Check mute state, adapter wiring and the product’s Xbox chat specification.

Delay, dropouts or one-earbud audio

  • Bluetooth codec and transmitter latency may be responsible.
  • TV processing or multiple HDMI/optical conversions can add delay.
  • Reconnect both earbuds and check their platform-specific pairing behavior.
  • Competitive players should prefer a wired controller connection or native Xbox Wireless.

No sound from a wired headset

  • Inspect the plug, controller jack and cable for looseness or debris.
  • Confirm the controller actually has a 3.5 mm port; otherwise use an adapter or newer controller.
  • Check Xbox volume and game/chat balance.
  • Test a known-working wired headset to isolate the controller.

Which option should you choose?

  • Lowest cost and most reliable chat: a wired headset through the controller.
  • Best wireless console experience: an Xbox Wireless or explicitly Xbox-compatible headset.
  • Reuse existing Bluetooth earbuds: a controller transmitter, accepting latency and uncertain microphone support.
  • Private game audio only: Bluetooth through the TV.
  • Competitive gaming: wired controller audio or a native Xbox Wireless headset.

Microsoft’s Designed for Xbox labeling explains how packaging communicates supported hardware and compatibility: Xbox Wire. Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth are separate connection paths, as also illustrated in Microsoft’s Xbox Adaptive Controller documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I connect AirPods directly to Xbox One?

No. AirPods and other ordinary Bluetooth earbuds cannot be paired natively through Xbox One menus. Use a controller Bluetooth transmitter, TV Bluetooth, remote play, or an Xbox-compatible headset instead.

Does Xbox One S or Xbox One X support Bluetooth headphones?

Neither console provides native pairing for ordinary Bluetooth audio headphones. The same controller, transmitter, TV and Xbox-compatible-headset options apply.

Can I use the Xbox Wireless Headset with Xbox One?

Yes. Microsoft lists it as compatible with Xbox One. Its Xbox console link is Xbox Wireless; its Bluetooth feature is for PC and mobile connections.

Will a Bluetooth USB adapter work?
