The Sims 4 base game is free to download on supported PC, Mac, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms. You need an EA Account and an internet connection to activate it, but EA says you can play offline after installation. Paid packs and other add-ons are optional; they are not required for the base game.
Is The Sims 4 free?
EA lists the base game at $0.00 and says it has been free to download since October 18, 2022. Check the EA product listing for the current price and supported platform links. The offer is for the base game, not every item in the franchise.
Expansion packs, game packs, kits, and Marketplace content are separate optional purchases. EA’s free-to-play announcement described continued paid content releases, and its Marketplace guide explains how to buy and download Marketplace items. You can play the free base game without buying them.
Where can you download it?
EA lists the EA app, Steam, and Epic Games as PC and Mac download routes. Supported consoles include PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One; use the relevant console store. The EA Help download guide has platform-specific access details.

What do you need to activate and play?
An EA Account and internet access are required for activation. EA says a continuous internet connection is not required for ordinary offline play after installation, although online features need connectivity. See the EA FAQ for account and connection details.
How to install The Sims 4 on a PC or Mac
- Choose a listed download route: EA app, Steam, or Epic Games.
- If using the EA app, sign in and search for “The Sims 4.”
- Select Download, choose the install location and language, and accept the terms of play.
- Select Download again. When installation is ready, the Play button appears.
For consoles, find the game in your platform’s store and follow that store’s installation process.

Will your computer run it?
Check EA’s current system requirements and EA Help requirements guide before downloading. As of October 8, 2026, EA’s listed PC minimums include 64-bit Windows 10, a qualifying processor, 4 GB RAM, and 25 GB free storage, plus at least 1 GB additional space for custom content and saved games. Mac minimums include macOS 10.15 with Metal support, 4 GB RAM, and 25 GB free storage, plus additional space for content and saves. Requirements can change, so use EA’s live pages rather than older cached specifications.
If the game runs poorly on a laptop or a system close to minimum specifications, EA recommends trying Laptop Mode in Game Options; it may improve frame rate and efficiency. If the game still will not launch, EA’s guides can help with troubleshooting, but the right fix depends on your platform, device specifications, account state, and exact error message.

PC/Mac and console editions: what carries over?
The console edition is separate from the PC/Mac version. Sims, lots, and households do not transfer between those platforms, and EA lists custom-content and mod support as unavailable on console. If you own the game on PC or Mac and want to play on console, download the console version separately. See EA’s console guide for platform details.
