Steam trade and Community Market restrictions caused by Steam Guard, a recent security change, or a new device generally cannot be removed early. Steam says Support cannot modify ordinary trading or Market restrictions, so you must wait until the expiration date Steam displays.
However, “Steam Guard restriction” can mean several different things. A blocked account, an item on hold, and a trade ban require different responses.
Identify the restriction first
Read the exact message shown by Steam and note its expiration date. Common causes include:

| Steam Guard recently enabled | Trading or Market access may be restricted for 15 days. |
| Authenticator transferred to another phone | Typically a two-day trade and Market restriction. |
| Authenticator active for fewer than seven days | New trades or listings may be held for up to 15 days. |
| New device authorized | Trading and Market use may be restricted on that device for seven days. |
| Held trade cancelled | A protective seven-day trading cooldown applies. |
| Password reset | Usually five days, or 30 days if the account had been inactive for more than two months. |
| Trade, Community, VAC, or game ban | A separate enforcement action, not an ordinary Steam Guard cooldown. |

Can Steam Support remove it?
Not normally. Steam states that Support cannot modify trading or Community Market restrictions, regardless of how they occurred. Contacting Support to explain that you own the account will not generally waive a valid security cooldown.
Support is still important if you lost your phone or authenticator, cannot sign in, suspect that someone hijacked the account, or believe another person added an authenticator. That is account recovery and security assistance—not a way to bypass a valid restriction.

If you removed the Mobile Authenticator
Removing the authenticator causes a 15-day inability to trade or use the Community Market. Re-enabling it does not reliably erase the existing restriction. Repeatedly disabling and enabling Steam Guard can also trigger another 15-day restriction, so do not toggle it in an attempt to reset the timer.

- Open the Steam Mobile app.
- Open Steam Guard.
- Tap the gear or options icon.
- Choose Remove Authenticator and confirm.
Labels can vary by app version and language. If you no longer have the phone, use Steam’s official account and authenticator recovery instructions instead of following advice from an unofficial account.
Changing phones: transfer instead of removing
If you are moving to a new phone, transfer the authenticator rather than removing it and setting it up again. The usual process is:

- Install the official Steam Mobile app on the new phone.
- Sign in.
- Select Move Authenticator when prompted.
- If the old phone is unavailable, choose I no longer have access to my authenticator and follow Steam’s recovery steps, commonly including an SMS code.
Steam applies a two-day trade and Market restriction after an authenticator transfer. That is generally shorter than the 15-day restriction caused by removal. If you lost both the old phone and its number, ask your carrier whether the number can be recovered and use Steam’s official account-recovery flow. Never give an SMS recovery code, authenticator removal code, password, or backup code to another person.

Steam may hold items leaving an account for up to 15 days when the account has not been protected by the Mobile Authenticator for at least the preceding seven days. Adding the authenticator afterward does not shorten holds that already exist. Transactions created before activation, or during the first seven days, can still remain held.
For an existing hold, keep the authenticator enabled and wait for the transaction’s release date. Do not cancel a suspicious held trade casually: cancelling an accepted held trade can trigger an additional seven-day trading cooldown.
If Steam says the device is new
Clearing browser cookies, changing browsers, reinstalling Steam, or reformatting a computer can cause Steam to treat the device as newly authorized. That can produce a seven-day trading and Market restriction. Browser changes and reinstallations are therefore not legitimate fixes; they may create another security event without removing the original one.
If suspicious trades or listings are pending
Do not approve an unfamiliar transaction. If Steam permits cancellation, cancel it, then secure the account immediately:
- Change the Steam password from the official Steam site.
- Secure the email account connected to Steam and change its password.
- Review authorized devices and sign out everywhere if an unknown device appears.
- Scan the computer and phone for malware.
- Remove suspicious browser extensions and revoke access you do not recognize.
- Contact Steam through the official account-security and recovery pages if access or ownership is in doubt.
Do not trust people claiming to be Steam Support in Discord, Steam Chat, social media, or other unofficial channels. A website or service promising to remove a restriction is not a legitimate bypass and may be trying to steal the account.

- Added the authenticator recently? Existing restrictions and holds may remain.

- Account hacked? Recover and secure the account immediately rather than waiting.
