There is no single “remove age restrictions” switch in the Xbox app. The correct fix depends on whether your Microsoft account has the wrong birth date, a parent controls the account through Family Safety, consent is missing, your region requires age verification, or a separate purchase, privacy, time, or third-party-app setting is blocking access.
Identify the restriction first

Microsoft says that when multiple users are signed in on an Xbox console, the youngest child or family member’s game restrictions may apply. The Xbox app can also reflect settings stored on the Microsoft account, Xbox profile, Microsoft Store, or Family Safety rather than inside the app itself.
Fix an adult account with the wrong birth date
If you are an adult but your Microsoft account has an incorrect date of birth, edit the information in your Microsoft account profile—not through an Xbox age switch.
- Sign in with the affected account at Microsoft’s profile-information editor.
- Edit the birth date and select Save.
- Sign out of the Xbox app and sign back in.
- If necessary, close and restart the app, restart the device, and refresh the Microsoft Store/Xbox account session.
Microsoft’s process varies according to whether the account is treated as an adult, has parental consent attached, or is still classified as a child account. Do not assume every adult account can freely edit its birth date.

If Microsoft says parental consent is required
An adult whose account was incorrectly classified as a child may still see Microsoft refer to the account as a “child account” during recovery. Follow Microsoft’s consent process:
- Sign in at login.live.com.
- Select I’m a parent or guardian.
- Sign in with an adult personal Microsoft account, or create one if Microsoft offers that option.
- Give consent by selecting Yes, I agree.
- Select Family Safety to complete the process.
- Review the associated accounts at Microsoft’s consent-management page.
- Select Edit this child’s personal info for the affected account.
Only the adult who originally granted consent may be able to manage it. A different family organizer might not have permission to change the account, even if that person manages other Family Safety settings.
See Microsoft’s birth-date instructions and its guidance on parental consent if the account is missing from the page or the consent owner cannot be identified.
Change restrictions on a child account
A child cannot legitimately remove its own parental consent or change its birth date while the account is below the applicable statutory age for its region. A parent or guardian must manage the account.

- The adult who originally granted consent signs in at account.live.com/mykids.asp.
- Select the child account.
- Choose Edit this child’s personal info and follow Microsoft’s instructions.
If the child does not appear, check that the correct adult Microsoft account is signed in. A family organizer may not be the same person who originally granted consent, and an account above the applicable statutory age may no longer be classified as a child account.

Remove Family Safety app, game, and time limits
Family Safety filters can block mature apps and games on connected Windows and Xbox accounts. The organizer can manage them in the Microsoft Family Safety app or at family.microsoft.com.
- Sign in as the family organizer.
- Select the affected family member.
- Choose the relevant platform, such as Windows, Xbox, or Mobile.
- Open Apps and games or Content filters.
- Raise the permitted age level, remove the filter, or unblock the specific game or app.
- Save the change, then sign out of and back into the Xbox app.
Microsoft’s instructions for filtering apps and games explain the available age and app controls. Do not confuse an age filter with a time limit. If the game is blocked after a schedule or allowance is exhausted, use Apps and games in Family Safety to turn off the limit or change its schedule. Limits can span connected Windows, Xbox, and Android devices.
Microsoft web and search filters have a narrower scope: they are designed around supported Microsoft Edge usage and do not automatically control every browser or app. See Microsoft’s web-filter guidance.

If the message specifically says that a parent blocked games and apps not published by Microsoft, changing the game’s age filter may not help. The consenting parent must enable third-party access:
- Sign in as the consenting parent at account.live.com/mk.
- Find the child account.
- Select Manage this child’s access to third-party apps.
- Select Enable access.
- Sign out of and back into the Xbox app.
Being a family organizer alone may not be sufficient; Microsoft says the adult who originally granted consent may control this permission. Details are in Microsoft’s guide to third-party app access.

Complete regional age verification
Some regions require or offer a separate Microsoft age-verification process because of local law. This is not the same as a Family Safety content filter, and not every user— including users in the United States—will see the same prompt.
- Follow the verification link or scan the QR code shown by Microsoft.
- Choose an available verification method.
- Complete the process through the approved partner or service.
- Return to the Xbox app and sign in again.
Depending on the country, Microsoft may offer selfie-based age estimation, government-issued ID, an approved digital-identity service, email verification, or credit-card verification. Availability varies geographically. Microsoft says completed verification applies to both the Microsoft account and Xbox account. In regions requiring verification, an incomplete check may prevent new purchases or downloads of 18+ games and apps, while already-owned mature content may remain accessible.

Check Xbox console settings
Some controls are configured on the console rather than in the Windows or mobile Xbox app. With an organizer account signed in, the current Xbox path is:
- Press the Xbox button.
- Go to Profile & system > Settings > Account > Family settings.
- Select Manage family members and choose the affected person.
- Open Privacy & online safety > Xbox Live privacy > View details & customize.
- Adjust the specific setting, such as Buy & download for purchase approval.
Menu labels and available controls can differ by console generation, region, account role, and software version. This is not a universal age-removal path: purchase approval, privacy, online safety, mature-content filtering, and time limits are separate controls.

Remove an adult or grown child from a family group
If an adult or grown child genuinely no longer needs family controls, sign in at family.microsoft.com, select the family member, choose Remove consent if it is offered, then return to the family-group page and select Remove from family group.
Removing someone from a family group does not correct an incorrect birth date or satisfy a regional age-verification requirement. Those are separate account-level issues.

- Sign out of the Xbox app and close it completely.
- Restart the PC or mobile device.
- Sign back in with the correct Microsoft account.
- Confirm that the Family Safety change was made for the correct family member and platform.
- Check whether another adult granted consent.
- Review the account profile for an incorrect birth date.
- If prompted for regional verification, complete that process instead of repeatedly changing Family Safety settings.
- Contact Microsoft Support if the consent-owning adult account is inaccessible or the account is missing from consent management.
If only one game is affected, check its ESRB, PEGI, or other regional rating; whether it is installed or owned under another account; online-multiplayer or user-generated-content permissions; purchase approval; and whether a younger user is signed in on the same Xbox.
What not to do
- Do not enter a false birth date to evade an age control.
- Do not use another person’s account to bypass parental settings.
- Do not create a new account as the first solution: purchases, saves, subscriptions, and account history may not transfer.
- Do not assume removing Family Safety, changing purchase approval, or changing privacy settings will remove every restriction.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a child remove Xbox age restrictions?
No. A child cannot independently remove parental consent or change the birth date while below the applicable statutory age. A parent or guardian must manage the account.
Can I change my date of birth in the Xbox app?
Normally, no. Correct it through the Microsoft account profile, then sign out of and back into the Xbox app.

Why does the Xbox app still show restrictions after I changed Family Safety?
The wrong family member or platform may have been changed, the app may need a fresh sign-in, another adult may control consent, or the restriction may be regional age verification rather than Family Safety.
Does removing someone from Microsoft Family remove all restrictions?
No. It does not rewrite the birth date or automatically satisfy regional age-verification requirements.
Why am I being asked to verify my age?
Your region may require age verification for certain mature-content purchases or downloads. Available methods and requirements vary by country.
