Yes. Minecraft: Java Edition can run with OpenJDK. In fact, Minecraft Java Edition 26.1 requires Java 25 and includes the Microsoft Build of OpenJDK 25. Most players using the official Minecraft Launcher do not need to install Java separately; manual OpenJDK installation is mainly useful for Prism Launcher, modded or older instances, servers, Linux systems, and players who need precise Java-version control.

Java is the platform Minecraft: Java Edition runs on. OpenJDK is the open-source implementation of that platform. A JDK (Java Development Kit) includes the Java runtime plus development tools, while the runtime components are what Minecraft needs to launch.
Microsoft Build of OpenJDK, Eclipse Temurin, Azul Zulu, Amazon Corretto, Oracle OpenJDK, and similar products are vendor distributions: packaged builds of OpenJDK supplied and maintained by different organizations. For Minecraft, the practical questions are the Java major version, whether the build is 64-bit and native to your operating system and CPU, and whether your launcher or modpack is configured to use it.
Do you need to install OpenJDK?
Official Minecraft Launcher
Usually, no. The official launcher is designed to manage Minecraft’s files and required runtime. Install or update the Minecraft Launcher, sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the game, select Minecraft: Java Edition, choose an installation, and click Play.
Installing a system-wide OpenJDK will not automatically improve FPS, and it can create confusion if the launcher continues using its own runtime. Use the bundled runtime unless you need a different version or are troubleshooting a damaged or missing installation.
Prism Launcher and other launchers
Manual OpenJDK installation is more useful with Prism Launcher, where separate instances can use different Java versions. Prism Launcher 9.0 and newer can, where supported by the package, detect Java automatically and offer automatic Mojang Java downloads. Its documented controls include Autodetect Java version, automatic Java download, and a Java compatibility check. Consult Prism’s Java installation guide, because menu labels and automatic-download support vary by version and package.
Some Linux packages do not support automatic Java downloading. You may need to install OpenJDK through your distribution or from a vendor package and then select its executable manually.

Servers, old versions, and ARM devices
A manual installation makes sense when launching a server from a terminal, running older releases or modpacks, using Linux without a suitable bundled runtime, or needing a native ARM64 build. Microsoft documents OpenJDK packages for Windows, macOS, and Linux, including x64 and several ARM64 targets, on its installation and support pages.

Which Java version does Minecraft need?
Use the Java version required by the specific Minecraft instance—not automatically the newest Java available.

The table is a practical compatibility guide, not an unconditional rule for every modded installation. A Java 25 installation can be correct for Minecraft 26.1 but unsuitable for a 1.12.2 modpack. Prism Launcher recommends checking the exact Minecraft version and instance requirements.
Different Prism instances can point to different Java executables. Keeping Java 8, 17, 21, or 25 installed side by side is often safer than forcing every old and new instance to use one runtime.
How to check your Java installation
Open a terminal or Command Prompt and run:

which javaon macOS and Linux. If the reported version is unexpected, your PATH may point to an older installation. A launcher configured with an explicit executable can still use a different Java version than the one returned by these commands.
How to install OpenJDK
Choose the major version required by your Minecraft instance and download a 64-bit, operating-system-appropriate build from a reputable vendor. The Microsoft Build of OpenJDK installation page provides Windows EXE and ZIP packages, macOS PKG and TAR.GZ packages, and Linux DEB, RPM, and archive packages.
Eclipse Temurin is another widely used option available from Adoptium’s official site. It is not inherently required over Microsoft’s build, nor is there evidence here that one vendor universally delivers higher Minecraft performance. Select based on version availability, native architecture, update support, and ease of maintenance.
After installation, run java --version again. If the result is correct but Minecraft still reports a missing or incompatible Java version, select the full path to the installed Java executable in the launcher rather than relying on PATH.

How to select OpenJDK in Prism Launcher
- Open Prism Launcher and its Java settings.
- Enable automatic Java detection if that option is available.
- Run the Java compatibility check.
- Open the settings for the specific Minecraft instance.
- Select the Java executable matching that instance’s requirement.
- Launch the instance and inspect the log if it fails.
Use per-instance configuration when you play multiple Minecraft generations. Automatic Java management is not available in every Linux package, so a manually installed runtime and explicit executable path may be necessary.

Running a Minecraft server with OpenJDK
For a downloaded server JAR, a generic command is:
java -Xms2G -Xmx4G -jar server.jar nogui-Xms2Gsets the initial heap.-Xmx4Gsets the maximum heap.-jar server.jarlaunches the server JAR.noguidisables the graphical server interface.
Replace server.jar with the exact filename. Memory needs depend on players, world complexity, simulation distance, mods, and total system RAM. Accept Minecraft’s EULA when required before normal server operation. Server software is available from the official Minecraft downloads page.
Troubleshooting Minecraft with OpenJDK
“Minecraft requires Java 17, 21, or 25”
The selected executable is probably the wrong major version. Run java --version, install the required OpenJDK release if necessary, and select that executable in the launcher or instance settings.

This means a game component, mod, or loader was compiled for a newer Java version than the one currently launching it. Check the modpack’s requirement, identify the requested class-file version in the error, and assign the correct Java executable to that instance. Changing only the system PATH may not change Prism’s configured runtime.
“Java is not recognized”
Java may not be installed or its executable may not be on PATH. Select the full executable path in the launcher, reopen the terminal after changing environment variables, and check for an old Java installation or stale Windows shim.
Wrong architecture
x64 systems generally need x64 Java. Apple Silicon Macs benefit from an ARM64/AArch64 build, while ARM Windows and Linux users should verify that the launcher, Java runtime, and graphics stack are native or intentionally running through emulation.

The game launches but crashes or stutters
Java compatibility is only one possible cause. Check available system RAM, excessive -Xmx allocation, graphics drivers, shader and rendering-mod conflicts, Vulkan/OpenGL compatibility, mod-loader versions, and whether the selected Java build matches the machine’s architecture.
Current official requirements also cover 64-bit hardware, memory, CPU capability, graphics hardware, and Vulkan 1.3 support for the updated minimum target. Adjusting memory in the official launcher
- Open Minecraft Launcher and select Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Open Installations and select the installation.
- Choose More Options.
- Find the JVM argument containing a value such as
-Xmx2G. - Change it cautiously, for example to
-Xmx4G, then save and test.
Do not allocate all system RAM to Minecraft. Minecraft’s support guidance says a system with 4 GB total RAM may need a lower allocation, and 64-bit systems should generally avoid assigning more than about half of total system memory. Read the official memory-allocation guidance.

Is OpenJDK better than Oracle Java?
For Minecraft, compatibility depends primarily on the required Java major version, architecture, launcher configuration, and the quality and maintenance of the distribution. OpenJDK is a valid choice and is the runtime family used by current Minecraft 26.1, but installing it alone does not promise higher FPS, lower latency, or better mod performance.
Likewise, “Oracle Java” is not a requirement for ordinary Minecraft play. Choose a maintained build that matches the instance and your operating system. If the official launcher already works, changing runtimes offers little practical benefit unless you need version control or are solving a specific problem.

For current vanilla Minecraft, use the official launcher’s bundled runtime. For Minecraft 26.1, the target is Java 25. For Prism Launcher, modded instances, older releases, Linux installations, servers, or ARM hardware, install a reputable OpenJDK build and assign it explicitly where needed. Keep multiple Java generations when your instances require them, and treat graphics hardware, drivers, memory, and mod compatibility as separate troubleshooting concerns.
