Intel HD Graphics 520 can run many older PC games, indie titles, 2D games, and some lightweight competitive games. A realistic target is 1280×720 resolution, Low settings, and approximately 30 FPS. It is not a sensible choice for modern demanding AAA games, ray tracing, or reliable 1080p gaming.

What is Intel HD Graphics 520?
Intel HD Graphics 520 is integrated graphics found in various sixth-generation Intel Core processors, part of Intel’s Skylake generation. Unlike a dedicated graphics card, it is built into the processor and has no dedicated VRAM. It reserves and shares system memory with Windows and applications.

The common HD 520 GT2 configuration has 24 execution units. Its maximum graphics frequency varies by processor, with many mobile models reaching roughly 950–1,050 MHz. Intel’s sixth-generation processor documentation shows the graphics clock differs between chips, so a Core i3-6006U, Core i5-6200U, Core i5-6300U, Core i7-6500U, and Core i7-6600U should not be treated as identical gaming platforms.

How powerful is HD 520 for gaming?
HD 520 was entry-level integrated graphics when it launched in 2015. It is considerably weaker than modern integrated graphics such as AMD Radeon 600M/700M-series graphics or Intel Iris Xe, and it is far below current dedicated gaming GPUs.
It can expose APIs including DirectX 12, OpenGL 4.6, OpenCL 2.0, and Vulkan 1.3 according to Intel’s supported-API documentation. That means the driver and hardware support those interfaces; it does not mean HD 520 has enough rendering power for every game using them.

For practical gaming, think of HD 520 as suitable for older or scalable games rather than current high-end releases. A game that launches is not necessarily a game that is enjoyable. These are different outcomes:
- Runs: The game launches and renders an image.
- Playable: Frame rates and frame times are acceptable at reduced settings.
- Recommended: The game provides a reasonably consistent experience without extreme compromises.
Why two HD 520 laptops can perform differently
Processor model
The processor controls the GPU’s maximum clock and also affects CPU-heavy workloads. A faster chip can improve minimum FPS, open-world streaming, physics, draw calls, and multiplayer performance. Low-power 15-watt U-series processors may also reduce their clocks during sustained gaming.
Single-channel versus dual-channel RAM
Because HD 520 uses system memory, memory bandwidth matters. A laptop with one RAM module may perform worse than an otherwise identical laptop with two matched modules operating in dual channel. The improvement is workload-dependent, so it should not be described as a guaranteed percentage.
DDR3L and DDR4 systems also have different platform limits. Check the exact laptop model before buying memory: some thin laptops have soldered RAM, one accessible slot, or a low maximum capacity. Crucial’s compatibility checker and Kingston’s memory search can help identify compatible modules.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteSystem memory capacity
Four gigabytes of RAM can create problems even when the GPU could theoretically render a game. Paging, browser tabs, launchers, and background processes may cause long loading times and severe stutter. Eight gigabytes is a more practical baseline for this platform, but it does not turn HD 520 into a powerful gaming GPU.
Thermals and power limits
Many HD 520 laptops are thin office or student machines. During a long session, heat can reduce both CPU turbo and GPU clocks. A game may start acceptably and become slower or less consistent after several minutes.
For the fairest result, play while plugged in, use the laptop’s balanced or high-performance profile where available, and monitor temperatures and clock speeds. Battery operation can reduce performance and produce inconsistent frame pacing.
Drivers
Use the laptop manufacturer’s validated graphics driver first. Intel specifically recommends checking with the computer manufacturer before installing a generic package because OEM laptops may require customized drivers. Intel’s HD 520 support page lists driver branches and a package numbered 31.0.101.2115 dated December 29, 2022, but that should not be called the universal latest driver for every operating system or laptop.

Recommended settings for HD 520
Start with this configuration:
- Set the resolution to 1280×720.
- Choose Low or Very Low quality.
- Reduce shadows, ambient occlusion, reflections, volumetric effects, and anti-aliasing.
- Disable motion blur and depth of field.
- Begin with Low textures, then test Medium textures if memory use remains reasonable.
- Reduce view distance when the game is CPU-limited or stutters in busy areas.
- Cap the frame rate at 30 FPS if uncapped performance produces uneven frame times.
- Test fullscreen and borderless modes; results can vary by game.
Lowering resolution is often more effective than leaving a 1080p display at native resolution with every other setting on Low. The trade-off is a softer or blurrier image, particularly when 720p is scaled to a 1080p panel.
Games HD 520 can realistically run
Generally good candidates
HD 520 is best suited to 2D platformers, roguelikes, card games, turn-based strategy, older Source-engine titles, older Blizzard games, and lightweight indie games. These may work at native resolution or 720p, with Low to Medium settings depending on the title.

Older games with modest minimum requirements are usually a better bet than newer games that merely list integrated graphics. Updates can change a game’s performance, so old benchmark claims are not guarantees for current builds.
Often playable with compromises
Depending on the laptop, RAM, and game version, examples may include:
- League of Legends
- Dota 2
- Older versions of Counter-Strike
- Team Fortress 2
- Minecraft with conservative settings
- Terraria, Stardew Valley, and Among Us
- Older racing games
- Older entries in franchises such as Skyrim, Fallout, and Grand Theft Auto
These are configuration-dependent examples, not universal guarantees. Multiplayer updates, expansions, mods, and engine changes can materially alter results.
Borderline or highly configuration-dependent
Some more demanding games may launch or become playable only with substantial compromises:
- Rocket League
- Fortnite in Performance Mode or its lowest available rendering mode
- Grand Theft Auto V Legacy
- The original Skyrim or Skyrim Special Edition
- Older Battlefield and Call of Duty releases
- Civilization VI
- The Sims 4, particularly with many expansions
- ARK: Survival Evolved
Expect 720p or lower, Low settings, reduced textures and effects, and possible stutter. Rocket League’s official requirements list Intel HD Graphics 4000 as a minimum graphics option, which suggests HD 520 meets that graphics-generation threshold, but the published minimum does not guarantee stable performance on every low-power laptop. See the official Rocket League requirements.
Games not recommended
HD 520 is not a practical target for Cyberpunk 2077, Starfield, current high-end Call of Duty releases, new Unreal Engine 5 AAA games, ray-traced titles, or modern open-world games whose minimum requirements specify a GTX 1060-, RX 580-, or newer-class GPU.
Some unusually scalable modern games may technically launch, but very low resolution, unstable frame times, or extremely low FPS can make the result unacceptable.
Important game-specific qualifications
Grand Theft Auto V
Rockstar’s published PC requirements specify a discrete NVIDIA 9800 GT or AMD HD 4870 as minimum graphics hardware and warn that some integrated graphics and mobile chipsets may be incompatible.
GTA V Legacy may be playable on some HD 520 systems with aggressive Low settings and reduced resolution. GTA V Enhanced should not be presented as a reasonable HD 520 target without direct testing. Consult Rockstar’s requirements.

Minecraft performance depends on the edition and configuration. Java Edition, Bedrock Edition, vanilla play, mods, shaders, texture packs, render distance, simulation distance, server size, and entity density are not equivalent workloads.
Vanilla Minecraft may be reasonable with a reduced render distance and conservative settings. Shaders should generally be treated as unsuitable. Intel also documents a Minecraft-related OpenGL or GLFW launch failure, so the correct OEM or Intel graphics driver matters. Do not rely on Microsoft Basic Display Adapter.
Fortnite
Fortnite performance changes with updates and rendering modes. If attempting it, use Performance Mode or the lowest available mode, 720p or lower, Low effects, and a short view distance. Older dual-core U-series processors may produce instability or poor minimum FPS even when the GPU can render the scene.
How to improve performance
- Plug in the laptop and select a suitable Windows power profile.
- Close browsers, launchers, overlays, and background applications.
- Use the correct graphics driver. Check the OEM driver before testing Intel’s generic package.
- Lower resolution first, then reduce shadows, reflections, ambient effects, and view distance.
- Check RAM operation. Dual-channel memory may help integrated graphics, while 8 GB is a more practical minimum for general gaming.
- Improve cooling. Clean blocked vents and use the laptop on a hard surface. Cooling changes are not guaranteed FPS upgrades, but preventing throttling can improve sustained consistency.
- Use a frame-rate cap when uncapped FPS causes stutter.
- Consider an SSD for faster booting, loading, and paging. An SSD normally does not materially increase average GPU FPS.
Do not rely on generic “game booster” utilities, driver-updater software, or random third-party driver sites.

The game does not launch
Possible causes include an unsupported graphics requirement, an incorrect driver, missing runtime components, launcher incompatibility, or a game that requires a discrete GPU despite exposing a compatible graphics API. API support alone cannot certify game compatibility.

Intel recommends comparing the game’s published minimum requirements with the exact processor and graphics model. If the integrated GPU is not explicitly listed, Intel advises contacting the game developer for confirmation. See Intel’s game-requirement guidance.
Minecraft reports an OpenGL or GLFW error
Check whether Windows is using Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. Install the laptop manufacturer’s graphics driver first, then test Intel’s supported package if appropriate. Reboot before retesting.
Severe stutter
Check single-channel memory, available RAM, thermal throttling, background applications, power mode, shader compilation, HDD activity, render distance, and internal resolution. Average FPS can look acceptable while frame-time spikes make the game feel poor.
Performance declines after several minutes
This often indicates heat or power-limit behavior on a thin 15-watt laptop. Monitor temperatures and CPU/GPU clocks rather than judging the system from its first few minutes of performance.
A driver update makes things worse
- Reinstall the laptop manufacturer’s validated graphics driver.
- Use Device Manager’s rollback option if available.
- Remove the generic driver and install the OEM package.
- Reboot and retest the same game and settings.
- Record the working driver version before making further changes.
How to check whether one specific game will run
- Identify the exact CPU, integrated GPU, RAM amount, and RAM channel configuration.
- Read the developer’s current minimum requirements.
- Compare the actual GPU model—not merely “Intel graphics”—with the listed requirement.
- Check the exact edition, game version, and rendering mode.
- Look for testing on a similar CPU and RAM configuration, not just an HD 520 result from an unrelated laptop.
- Start at 1280×720 and Low settings.
- Judge sustained frame-time consistency and minimum FPS, not only an average FPS number.
Old benchmark pages can be useful for relative positioning, but results should be interpreted alongside the game version, driver, laptop model, processor, RAM configuration, resolution, preset, and whether the result reports average FPS or 1% lows.
Other practical limitations
External monitors
An external monitor does not increase HD 520’s rendering performance. Output capabilities also depend on the laptop’s port and display controller. The HD 520 platform commonly supports DisplayPort or eDP up to 3840×2160 at 60 Hz, while HDMI 1.4a may be limited to 3840×2160 at 30 Hz. These output limits do not make 4K gaming practical.
Linux
Linux results can differ because of Mesa drivers, Vulkan support, Proton, translation layers, and game-specific compatibility. Windows performance expectations should not be transferred directly to Linux.
Emulation
Older emulation workloads may be possible, but results depend heavily on CPU single-thread performance and the emulator. Do not assume a particular console generation will be universally playable without testing the exact emulator and game.
Should you upgrade the laptop or replace it?
A compatible RAM upgrade is the most relevant low-cost improvement when the laptop has 4 GB, single-channel memory, and an accessible slot. Verify whether it uses DDR3L or DDR4 and confirm the maximum supported capacity first.
An SSD can make the system feel much faster, especially if it currently uses a hard drive, but it is a responsiveness upgrade rather than a meaningful HD 520 FPS upgrade. Check whether the laptop accepts a standard 2.5-inch drive, M.2 drive, or a proprietary format. Official product information is available from Crucial and Samsung.
If modern gaming is important, a newer used or refurbished laptop with AMD Radeon Vega or 600M/700M integrated graphics, Intel Iris Xe, or a low-end dedicated GPU is generally a better direction. Identify the exact GPU rather than assuming any newer Core i5 or Ryzen 5 is automatically suitable. Buying another old office laptop with HD 4000, HD 4400, or HD 5500 may provide little improvement.
Cloud and remote gaming alternatives
Cloud gaming can bypass the HD 520’s rendering limitations because the remote server renders the game. Services such as GeForce NOW, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and Boosteroid require reliable broadband, low latency, and a supported game or storefront. Availability, supported libraries, and pricing vary by country and plan.
If you already own a more powerful desktop, Steam Remote Play or Moonlight can stream games locally. This requires a capable host PC and a stable home network. Neither option fixes poor Wi-Fi, high latency, data caps, or an unsupported game.
Final verdict
Intel HD Graphics 520 can run games, but it is best understood as an older entry-level integrated GPU. It is a reasonable platform for indie games, 2D titles, older PC games, and some lightweight competitive games at 720p Low. Certain 3D games—including Rocket League, Fortnite, Minecraft, or GTA V Legacy—may be playable on some laptops with substantial compromises.
It is not recommended for modern AAA games, ray tracing, demanding open-world releases, or consistent 1080p/60-FPS gaming. For a used laptop, HD 520 is acceptable when gaming is secondary and the price is very low; otherwise, newer Radeon integrated graphics, Intel Iris Xe, a dedicated GPU, or cloud gaming will provide a much better experience.
