Can IRL Pro Keep a YouTube Stream Live During a Server Restart?

IRL Pro may reconnect after a relay server restarts, but YouTube does not guarantee the same event will stay live. Here’s how to test your setup and plan for failover.

Not reliably. Restarting the only server relaying an IRL Pro feed interrupts the video reaching YouTube. IRL Pro or the relay may reconnect afterward, but that is not the same as uninterrupted streaming, and YouTube does not promise that the same live event will remain open through every outage. Test your exact setup before a public broadcast.

What happens when the server restarts?

IRL Pro on Android can publish over RTMP or SRT. A relay or server in the path receives that feed and sends it onward to YouTube. While the sole server is stopped, it cannot forward video. IRL Pro may retry once the server returns, but a retry only restores a connection; it cannot send video during the outage.

Enhanced IRL’s guide describes a dashboard changing from “No signal” to “Streaming” when the app is broadcasting, and a reconnect loop when the URL is invalid. Those behaviors indicate connection status and retry behavior, not that YouTube receives video during a server restart. Enhanced IRL’s guide

Will YouTube end the live event?

YouTube’s encoder guidance says, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” That describes how to end a stream; it does not specify a universal grace period for missing input or guarantee how a returning feed will be handled in every configuration. A brief disconnection should not be treated as a guaranteed pause, seamless recovery, or continuation of the same event. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The stream’s auto-start and auto-stop controls also affect whether beginning or stopping encoder output starts or ends the event. Check the settings for the specific stream in YouTube Live Control Room rather than assuming a reconnect will behave the same way across events.

Single server or redundant path?

Approach What to expect Trade-off
One server, with IRL Pro reconnecting The outgoing feed is interrupted while that server restarts. Whether the returning feed resumes the same YouTube event is not guaranteed by YouTube’s cited help. Simpler to operate, but viewers may see an interruption and recovery may require action.
Redundant encoder or failover path A backup may provide another feed if the primary fails. YouTube advises testing whether the player rolls over to the backup when the primary encoder is stopped or disconnected. More operational complexity; the specific IRL Pro, relay, and YouTube configuration still needs testing.

A relay can be configured to reconnect upstream or to time out after inactivity, but those are server-side behaviors, not a YouTube guarantee that the event survives a restart. NGINX RTMP module documentation For a setup where continuity matters, a tested backup path is stronger than relying on one server to restart quickly. YouTube Help: Use backup encoders

Test your exact setup before going public

  1. Create an unlisted YouTube test stream with the same event settings you plan to use.
  2. Use the same IRL Pro protocol, stream key, relay, and routing as the intended broadcast. Confirm in the relay dashboard whether the incoming publisher disconnects and reconnects.
  3. Watch both YouTube Live Control Room and the viewer playback while restarting the server. Note whether the event stays open, whether video resumes, how long recovery takes, and whether anyone must intervene.
  4. Check the event’s auto-start and auto-stop settings, then repeat the test if you change them.
  5. If uninterrupted coverage matters, test a backup encoder path separately. YouTube recommends deliberately stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet connection and confirming that playback rolls over to the backup.

This is a practical test, not a guarantee that another account or configuration will behave identically. YouTube also advises testing before a live event and monitoring the stream; it warns, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” YouTube Help: Streaming tips

What transport and network settings can—and cannot—fix

SRT may hold up better than RTMP on unstable mobile coverage, according to Enhanced IRL’s guide. Choosing a transport suited to your network, using a sensible bitrate, and leaving upload bandwidth headroom can help with packet loss or weak connectivity. They do not remove the single point of failure when the only publishing server is stopped: no transport can deliver video through a server that is offline. Troubleshooting after the restart

  • IRL Pro keeps retrying, but YouTube has no video: Check that the server is back, the relay accepts the returning publisher, and the relay is forwarding to YouTube. A retry loop does not confirm that the downstream feed is live.
  • The relay shows a publisher but YouTube does not: Check the relay’s outbound connection and the Live Control Room’s stream status. Confirm that the configured YouTube server URL and stream key are the intended ones.
  • The event appears to have ended: Inspect the event and its auto-start/auto-stop settings in Live Control Room. Do not assume that reconnecting the source reopens the original event.
  • The viewer sees a gap or playback does not recover: Check whether a backup path is actually active and whether the player rolls over to it. Test the failover behavior before relying on it for a public stream.
  • The connection repeatedly drops on mobile: Review network stability and available upload capacity; consider whether SRT is appropriate for the link. These measures address connectivity problems, not a planned restart of the only relay server.
