Spoiler warning: This covers the transition from Chapter 6 into the epilogue. No—Arthur’s horses do not carry over to John, including horses left in the stable. John starts the post-game with his own horse and can break or buy another one. IGN’s post-game guide, updated June 20, 2024, confirms the transfer and starting-horse details.
What happens to Arthur’s horses?
John cannot inherit Arthur’s horses when the story moves into the epilogue. Stabling a horse before Chapter 6 ends does not preserve it for John; Arthur’s stabled horses are no longer there for him to use.

How can John get another horse?
Once you are playing as John, the post-game guide says you can break a horse or buy one. These are ways to acquire another horse; they do not recover the same individual horse Arthur owned.
- Break one: Tame a horse and make it your mount.
- Buy one: Use a stable to purchase a horse.
For general context on taming and stable functions, RDR2.org’s horse guide describes horses as obtainable in the wild and stables as places to buy, sell, and equip horses. It is an unofficial gameplay guide, not an authoritative source on epilogue inheritance.

Does Rockstar confirm the transfer rule?
Rockstar’s support pages describe when two specific edition horses become available through story progression: the War Horse preorder bonus and the Dappled Black Thoroughbred. Those pages explain stable access for those horses; they do not address whether Arthur’s ordinary stable transfers to John. The transfer answer above is established by IGN’s post-game guide, not by those Rockstar articles.

The cited sources do not establish whether Buell or every other unique horse has a specific recovery exception, nor do they verify reported workarounds. The supported answer is that Arthur’s stable horses do not transfer to John; do not assume that an individual unique horse can be recovered unless you have horse-specific confirmation.
