Yes—Nintendo Switch players can play Minecraft with a Windows PC player when the PC player launches Minecraft for Windows (Bedrock Edition). Java Edition cannot join a Switch Bedrock game. Switch players also need a Microsoft account and Nintendo Switch Online for online multiplayer.
Which PC version works with Nintendo Switch?
Switch Minecraft is part of Bedrock cross-play. On PC, the compatible choice is Minecraft for Windows, the Bedrock edition. Minecraft’s platform listing identifies Windows and Nintendo Switch among the platforms that can play together.

The current PC listing includes both Java and Bedrock, but owning the bundle does not make the editions interchangeable: the PC player still needs to open Bedrock to join a Switch game. See Minecraft’s PC edition details.
What you need before joining
- The PC player launches Minecraft for Windows (Bedrock), not Java Edition.
- The Switch player signs into Minecraft with a Microsoft account. Creating or using that account is free.
- The Switch player has Nintendo Switch Online for online multiplayer.
- Both players have current game versions and a stable internet connection.
- The world, Realm, or server allows the other player to join. Child accounts may require multiplayer permissions to be enabled.
The Microsoft account and Nintendo Switch Online serve different purposes: the former connects players across platforms, while the latter is Nintendo’s online-play requirement. Minecraft explains its multiplayer requirements and child-account multiplayer access separately.

How to connect Switch and PC players
- Sign in on Switch. Open Minecraft on the console and choose the Microsoft account sign-in option. Follow the on-screen code instructions in a browser on a phone or computer, then confirm the account. After successful sign-in, the Xbox gamertag appears on Minecraft’s title screen. See Minecraft’s Switch sign-in instructions.
- Open Bedrock on the PC. Launch Minecraft for Windows. If the PC player sees Java Edition, switch to Minecraft for Windows instead.
- Add or invite the other player. Use Minecraft’s friends interface and the other player’s Microsoft/Xbox gamertag. Microsoft account multiplayer information is available in Minecraft’s multiplayer guide.
- Join a compatible session. The host can invite the friend to a world or use a Realm or server that supports the joining player’s edition and version. A Java-hosted world will not work with Switch simply because an invite was sent.
If the Switch player cannot join
- Check the PC edition: confirm it is Minecraft for Windows (Bedrock), not Java Edition.
- Check sign-in and friend details: verify that the Switch shows the expected Xbox gamertag and that the invitation uses that gamertag.
- Check updates and session access: update both games and make sure the host’s world, Realm, or server permits the other player to join.
- Check account permissions: a child account’s multiplayer settings can block access even when it is signed in.
- Check Switch online eligibility: online multiplayer on Switch requires Nintendo Switch Online.
- Check the connection: both players need stable internet for online play.
