Yes. One person can make a game in Unreal Engine, and Epic explicitly includes solo developers in its indie-game guidance. Whether you can finish a particular game depends chiefly on its scope and on the time you can give its design, programming, art, sound, testing, and release. You can work with Blueprints, C++, or both; you do not need to begin by building a game framework from scratch.

What solo development in Unreal actually involves

Epic describes Unreal Engine as a tool for indie teams ranging “from small studios to solo devs.” That establishes that solo development is a supported use, not that a solo project will be easy or commercially successful. A single developer may need to handle several roles that a larger team divides among specialists.

Choose a first project whose essential play experience can be expressed in a small number of interactions. A compact game with one clear mechanic is a more manageable learning target than a project that requires many levels, systems, characters, and assets. That is practical scope advice, not a completion guarantee.

Do you need to know how to code?

Not necessarily before you start. Unreal Engine includes Blueprints, a visual scripting system, as well as C++ and access to source code. Blueprints let you build game logic visually, but they do not eliminate the need to understand logic, test behavior, diagnose problems, and make design decisions. You can begin with Blueprints and learn C++ later if your project calls for it, or use both.

A practical way to begin

  1. Pick one core interaction. Define what the player does and what feedback the game gives in response. Keep the first goal narrower than a finished commercial release.
  2. Learn the editor from an existing starting point. Use an Unreal template or sample project to explore how the editor, assets, and gameplay systems fit together rather than starting with an empty project.
  3. Follow Epic’s beginner material. Epic provides documentation, Blueprint learning resources, and a course titled “Your First Game in Unreal Engine.” Its Stack O Bot and other feature-example projects offer concrete material to study. See Epic’s indie game resources.
  4. Add and test one feature at a time. Check that the core interaction works before expanding the project. Keep track of the work still needed for presentation, sound, usability, and testing as well as gameplay.

What does Unreal Engine cost for a game?

Epic’s licensing pages state that game developers owe no standard Unreal Engine royalty until gross product revenue exceeds $1 million USD. For a qualifying Unreal Engine product, the stated standard royalty is 5% of lifetime gross revenue above that threshold that is directly attributable to the product. Epic says revenue from sales through the Epic Games Store is royalty-free. These terms are governed by the license agreement, so check how its definitions and exclusions apply to your game.

Epic also describes a conditional “Launch Everywhere with Epic” program that may reduce the royalty rate to 3.5% for qualifying games released on the Epic Games Store before or at the same time as other stores on corresponding platforms. Eligibility and program terms apply; this is not an automatic rate for every release. Epic’s release guidance also describes quarterly royalty reporting. Review the current Unreal Engine license terms, release guidance, and Unreal Engine EULA before relying on a particular obligation or rate. The pages are dynamic, so confirm them again when planning a release.
