Niantic’s documented exception is Party Play: while you are in a Party, members of that Party can see an approximate, real-time position for your Trainer avatar on the Party Map. You can disable that sharing with the in-game Share Location with Party setting. A separate optional feature, Adventure Sync and other background activity tracking, may let Niantic collect location while Pokémon GO is closed when you have enabled it and granted consent.
Those are three different questions—what the game needs, what Niantic collects, and what other trainers can see. Keeping them separate gives a more accurate answer than a simple yes or no.

What location information Pokémon GO uses
Pokémon GO is built around real-world movement. Niantic’s Privacy Policy says its location-based games need to know where a player is to operate the service and place in-game resources, such as PokéStops. It identifies GPS, nearby Wi-Fi points and cellular-tower triangulation as possible location signals.
That is service operation, not a public broadcast. The policy describes real-world locations connected with gameplay as personal data handled by Niantic. It does not say that every friend, nearby trainer or random player receives a live feed of your position. The information needed to put a PokéStop on your map and the information displayed to another person are separate data flows.

Why location is required for ordinary play
- The map must be centered on your approximate real-world position.
- Location-based resources and encounters need to be presented in the correct area.
- Movement-related features need position updates to function.
- Location signals can be combined from GPS, Wi-Fi and cellular networks, so the result may vary with reception, permissions and device settings.
If you deny location access, disable location services or provide an inaccurate signal, core map features can stop working or behave incorrectly. Turning off a sharing feature for other players is therefore not the same thing as preventing the game from using location for gameplay.
Can Pokémon GO friends see where you are?
Niantic’s Party Play safety guidance gives the clearest player-visibility statement: “No other trainers will be able to see your approximate real-time location other than those in your Party.” In practical terms, the documented live-location display is limited to the Party context, rather than being a default view for everyone on your friends list.
The wording matters. It says approximate real-time location, not a precise GPS coordinate or an address. It also describes visibility during a Party session. The statement is an official explanation of the feature’s intended audience, not an independent audit of every version, account state or network request.

How Party Play location sharing works
Who can see the map position
During a Party session, Party members can see your Trainer avatar on the Party Map View at an approximation of your actual real-world location. The other members of that Party are the audience identified by Niantic’s safety page; the page specifically excludes other trainers outside the Party from seeing that approximate live position.

When the sharing applies
The documented sharing is tied to an active Party session. It is not described as a permanent profile location, a public map marker or a location history that all friends can browse. If you leave the Party or disable the setting, the Party-specific display should no longer be available through that feature, subject to the normal caveat that app behavior can change with updates.
How to turn off Party location sharing
Niantic lists this control path for Pokémon GO:
- Open Pokémon GO and go to Map View.
- Tap Main Menu.
- Open Settings.
- Select General.
- Toggle off Share Location with Party.
The setting controls Party Play visibility. It does not tell the game to stop using location for the map, encounters or other ordinary location-based functions. Those functions have their own location permission and service requirements.
Adventure Sync and location when the app is closed
Adventure Sync is a separate background activity feature. Niantic’s privacy documentation says that, when a player elects to enable background activity tracking, location and fitness-activity data may be collected while Pokémon GO is not open. The company names Adventure Sync as an example of this type of optional processing.

There are two important limits to that statement:
- It applies when you have chosen to enable the feature and provided the relevant consent or permissions.
- It concerns collection by Niantic for the feature; it is not a statement that your friends can watch a background live map of you.
You can turn background activity tracking off in Pokémon GO or in your device’s permission controls. The exact labels and menu locations vary between Android and iOS releases, phone manufacturers and app versions, so a universal tap-by-tap path would be misleading. Look for Adventure Sync or background location/activity controls in Pokémon GO’s settings, then review the operating system’s location permission for the app.

Three different audiences and timings
Use this distinction when deciding what you want to disable:
| Situation | Who receives or uses location | When it applies | Relevant control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core Pokémon GO gameplay | Niantic’s service uses location signals to operate the game and place location-based resources. | While location-based features are being used; the app needs an appropriate device permission. | Device location permission and location services. Restricting these can break normal gameplay. |
| Party Play sharing | Members of your current Party can see an approximate real-time avatar position on the Party Map. | During a Party session, unless sharing is disabled. | Map View → Main Menu → Settings → General → Share Location with Party. |
| Adventure Sync or other background activity tracking | Niantic may collect location and activity data for the enabled feature; this is not the same as a friend-facing live map. | When you have opted in, including while the app is closed. | Adventure Sync/background controls in the app and your phone’s app-permission settings. |
What your friends can infer without a live location feed
Even when Party sharing is off, Pokémon GO contains ordinary social and gameplay signals. A player may know that you participated in a raid, exchanged a gift or interacted with a gym because the game exposes those actions in its normal interfaces. Those signals are not equivalent to a continuously updating location display. The official Party Play statement addresses approximate real-time position specifically; it does not promise that every other gameplay detail is private.
Likewise, screenshots, livestreams, social posts, raid invitations and messages can reveal where you are if you choose to share them. That is disclosure by the player or by surrounding context, not evidence that Pokémon GO has made a public GPS feed available to all trainers.
How to check and reduce location access
Inside Pokémon GO
- Review Share Location with Party under Map View → Main Menu → Settings → General.
- Check whether Adventure Sync or another background activity option is enabled.
- Read any permission prompt before accepting background or location access, especially after an app update.
- Leave Parties you no longer recognize or trust, rather than remaining in an active session unintentionally.
On your phone
Open the operating system’s app-permission page for Pokémon GO and examine location access. Depending on the platform, you may see choices such as while using the app, always, approximate or precise. The names and available choices differ by operating-system version, and changing them can affect gameplay or background features. If you want to stop background collection while preserving map play, first disable Adventure Sync or background tracking in the app, then choose the least-permissive device option that still supports the gameplay you want.

After changing a setting
- Close and reopen Pokémon GO if a toggle appears not to take effect.
- Confirm that the Party sharing switch remains off when you revisit the settings screen.
- Ask Party members to check whether your avatar is still visible on the Party Map; this tests the feature directly rather than relying on assumptions about the account.
- Remember that a later app update can add, rename or relocate controls, so compare the current in-app wording with Niantic’s help documentation.
What the official disclosures do—and do not—establish
Niantic’s policy is a company description of how its services use personal data, not an independent privacy audit. The Party Play help page is a direct explanation of the feature’s intended visibility, while the Google Play listing’s developer-provided data-safety section says the app may collect location and personal information. Google also warns that practices can vary by use, region and age. Treat the storefront disclosure as a broad notice, not a guarantee that every account has identical settings.
None of these sources supplies a statistic showing how often location is viewed, a list of every internal recipient, or a promise that implementation is identical across all devices and versions. What they do establish is narrower and more useful: location is necessary for the location-based service; Party members can receive an approximate real-time position during Party Play; and optional background tracking can collect location while the app is closed when enabled.

“If Niantic knows my location, every player knows it.”
No. Service-side collection and player-facing display have different audiences. Niantic needs location to operate the game, but its Party Play guidance limits the documented approximate live display to members of your Party.

No. The Party toggle governs the Party Map display. Core gameplay still needs location, and Adventure Sync or other background tracking has separate controls.

“Adventure Sync means my friends can track me while the app is closed.”
That conclusion is not supported by the cited disclosures. Adventure Sync concerns optional background activity collection by Niantic. It is not described as a friend-visible live tracker.
“A precise address is shown to Party members.”
Niantic describes an approximate real-time location represented by your Trainer avatar. The documentation does not promise or describe a street-address-level display.
A practical privacy checklist before joining a Party
- Confirm who is in the Party and whether you know or trust them.
- Decide whether an approximate live position is acceptable for the duration of the session.
- Turn off Share Location with Party if you do not want Party members to receive that display.
- Review Adventure Sync and background permissions separately; do not assume one toggle controls both.
- Check your phone’s location-permission level after major operating-system or Pokémon GO updates.
- Avoid posting screenshots or streams that expose landmarks, routes or other identifying context.
Bottom line
Pokémon GO does use your location, and Niantic may collect it for gameplay and for optional background features you enable. Other players do not receive a universal live view merely because you play the game. The specific documented exception is Party Play, where members of your current Party can see an approximate real-time position on the Party Map. Disable Share Location with Party to stop that Party-specific display, and manage Adventure Sync and phone permissions separately if your concern is collection while the app is closed.
