If “Minecraft PE” means the current mobile version on Android, iPhone, or iPad, it is Minecraft: Bedrock Edition and can play with other Bedrock players on compatible devices. That includes Windows Bedrock, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch.
The important exception is Java Edition: mobile Bedrock cannot normally join a Java world or Java server through Minecraft’s standard multiplayer system. For online play, players generally need compatible game versions, Microsoft accounts, enabled multiplayer permissions, and—on consoles—the required online subscription.

What does “Minecraft PE” mean today?
“Minecraft PE” means Minecraft: Pocket Edition, the older name for Minecraft on phones and tablets. The modern mobile game is generally part of Bedrock Edition, not a separate current edition called PE.

Minecraft describes Bedrock account and cross-platform paths for Windows PC, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS in its account requirements documentation.
Requirements before you try multiplayer
- Everyone must use Bedrock. A PC player who owns both editions must open Minecraft Bedrock to join mobile players.
- Update every device. Version mismatches are a common reason a friend or world does not appear. Update Minecraft to the newest compatible release available for each platform; avoid relying on version numbers from older guides.
- Sign in with Microsoft accounts. Mobile players can sign in from Minecraft’s account screen. Add the other player using the correct Microsoft/Xbox gamertag. The official mobile sign-in guide explains the process.
- Enable multiplayer. The host’s world must allow multiplayer, and child or family accounts must be permitted to join multiplayer and cross-network games.
- Check console requirements. The console participant may need the platform’s online multiplayer service, such as Xbox Game Pass Core or its current equivalent, Nintendo Switch Online, or PlayStation Plus. Requirements and plan names can change, so check the current platform policy.
- Use a working network. Online play needs internet access. LAN play requires all devices to be connected to the same local network.
Four ways to play together
1. Join a friend’s active world
This is usually the simplest free option for occasional sessions. The host’s ordinary world is generally joinable only while the host is online and running it.
Host steps
- Open Minecraft Bedrock.
- Select Play, then open Worlds.
- Select the pencil/edit icon beside the world.
- Open Multiplayer and enable Multiplayer Game.
- Start the world.
- Pause the game and select the Social button.
- Select Invite to Play, choose the friend, and send the invitation.
Menu labels can change between releases and platforms. Minecraft’s current instructions are in its guides for inviting friends and joining an online Bedrock world.

- Skins! We have biome settlers, city folk, town folk, and more!
- The Nether and all its inhabitants. Fight Ghasts and make friends with Pigmen
- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
- Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
Joining-player steps
- Launch Minecraft Bedrock.
- Select Play.
- Open the Friends tab.
- Find the host under Joinable Friends.
- Select the world to join.
2. Use a Bedrock Realm
A Bedrock Realm is a paid, hosted world designed for groups that want a persistent shared game. Unlike an ordinary friend-hosted world, a Realm can remain available to invited players when its owner is offline.
Joining an existing Realm
- Accept the Realm invitation using the Microsoft account linked to Minecraft.
- Open Minecraft Bedrock and select Play.
- Open the Realms tab.
- Select the Realm, then select Play.
The Realm owner pays for the subscription; an invited guest does not need to buy their own Realms subscription. Use a Bedrock Realm for mobile, console, and Windows Bedrock players. Java Realms are a separate product path. See Minecraft’s Realm joining guide.
3. Join a Bedrock multiplayer server
Bedrock players can use Minecraft’s featured servers or other servers that explicitly support Bedrock. Server availability, connection instructions, platform support, rules, and latency vary.

- DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, three Bedrock add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
- SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).
Do not assume that a Java server accepts mobile players. A server must support Bedrock directly or use a compatibility bridge, and console connection methods can have additional restrictions. For casual groups, a friend world or Realm is usually easier than configuring a server.

LAN is useful when everyone is in the same home, classroom, or venue. All devices must be on the same local network; being in the same building is not enough if one device is using cellular data, guest Wi-Fi, a VPN, or a network with device isolation.
Host steps
- Connect every device to the same Wi-Fi or local network.
- Open Minecraft and select Play.
- Edit an existing world or create a new one.
- Open Multiplayer.
- Enable Multiplayer Game and Visible to LAN Players.
- Start the world.
Joining-player steps
- Connect to the same local network.
- Open Minecraft and select Play.
- Open Worlds.
- Look for a world marked LAN, then select it.
If the LAN world is missing, check the LAN display control on the Worlds screen. Minecraft’s LAN guidance also emphasizes compatible versions and the same network.

- The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
Why can’t PE join Java Edition?
Java and Bedrock are separate editions with different multiplayer systems. A Microsoft account supplies identity and cross-platform services, but it does not merge the editions or convert a Java world into a Bedrock world.
Therefore, a mobile player cannot normally join a Java player’s world or Java server. The PC player must launch Windows Bedrock instead. If Java/Bedrock bridging is discussed online, it usually involves specialized server software, compatibility layers, version restrictions, and possible gameplay or support limitations. It is an advanced workaround, not the normal solution for a family or casual group.
Troubleshooting common connection problems
The friend does not appear in the Friends tab
- Confirm both players are signed in with Microsoft accounts.
- Check that each player added the other using the correct gamertag.
- Make sure the host has started the world.
- Confirm Multiplayer Game is enabled in the host world.
- Update Minecraft on every device.
- Check child-account privacy and multiplayer permissions.
“Unable to connect to world”
- Update all copies of Minecraft.
- Confirm everyone is using Bedrock.
- Confirm the host is still online and the world is open.
- Check world multiplayer settings.
- Review Microsoft/Xbox family and privacy settings.
- Check the console player’s required online subscription.
- Restart Minecraft and sign out and back in if the profile is not loading correctly.
- Investigate network, DNS, port, or Minecraft service-status problems if the basic checks fail.
Minecraft’s Bedrock connectivity guidance identifies outdated versions, permissions, world settings, subscriptions, and network configuration as possible causes.

A Realm is missing
- Accept the invitation with the Microsoft account linked to Minecraft.
- Open Play → Realms, not only the ordinary Friends list.
- Confirm the player is using Bedrock rather than Java.
- Update the game.
- Check that account restrictions allow Realms and multiplayer.
The LAN world does not appear
- Put every device on the same Wi-Fi or local network.
- Enable Visible to LAN Players on the host world.
- Check the LAN display toggle under Worlds.
- Make sure versions are compatible.
- Disable or account for VPNs, cellular data, guest networks, and router isolation.
A child account cannot join
A parent or family administrator may need to allow joining multiplayer games, joining Realms, cross-network play with people on other services, and friend or social features. Minecraft documents these controls in its guide to child-account multiplayer access.
Which multiplayer option should you choose?
| Situation | Best choice | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Two friends playing occasionally | Friend-hosted world | The host must be online |
| Family members in the same home | LAN play | Discovery can fail if the network isolates devices |
| A persistent survival world | Bedrock Realm | The owner needs a paid subscription |
| A public community or customized setup | Bedrock-compatible server | Access, rules, configuration, and latency vary |
| Mobile player joining a PC player | Windows Bedrock | Launching Java will not work |
| Mobile player joining Java | No normal direct option | Bridging requires advanced third-party setup |
For most groups, start with a friend-hosted Bedrock world. Choose LAN when everyone is physically together, and choose a Bedrock Realm when the world needs to remain available without its owner. A server is mainly useful when the group needs public access or more control.
Quick Recap
Important compatibility qualifications
- “PE” is a familiar legacy name, not a separate current multiplayer edition.
- Cross-platform means crossplay among supported Bedrock devices, not automatic Java/Bedrock compatibility.
- A Microsoft account does not guarantee a successful connection; permissions, versions, network conditions, and host availability still matter.
- Marketplace purchases, add-ons, and subscriptions do not prove that every platform or edition is compatible. Add-ons and mods are not automatically portable across editions.
- Cellular data can support online play, but it does not create a LAN session.
- Console subscription requirements, platform policies, and menu labels can change. Check the current official documentation for the platform involved.
- For PlayStation-specific account linking and cross-platform details, consult Minecraft’s PlayStation Bedrock FAQ.
