Possibly, but it depends on your laptop and operating system. PRISM Live Studio supports streaming to YouTube, but its official documentation does not promise that a stream will continue when you close the laptop lid. Closing the lid may put the computer to sleep or otherwise interrupt streaming, depending on its power settings. Test your exact setup before relying on it for a long broadcast.
What happens when you close the lid?
PRISM can send a desktop stream to YouTube through an account connection or RTMP stream details. That establishes YouTube support; it does not mean PRISM controls what the laptop does when its lid closes. PRISM’s and YouTube’s reviewed documentation do not give a universal lid-closed setting or guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
Whether the stream survives depends on the specific laptop and operating-system power behavior. Check current guidance for your laptop model and operating system rather than assuming that closing the lid will keep the computer awake. There is no universal requirement established here for an external monitor, dock, cooling stand, or other accessory.
Check compatibility and streaming performance
PRISM lists Windows 10/11 64-bit and Apple Silicon macOS 12.3 or later among its desktop requirements. These are compatibility requirements, not promises of performance or continuous operation. See PRISM Live Studio’s desktop system requirements.

Choose resolution, frame rate, and encoder settings your computer and upload connection can sustain. PRISM warns that settings beyond a computer’s capabilities can cause performance problems. Its performance guide explains encoder trade-offs, including that software encoding can increase CPU load. PRISM states: “Since this function increases CPU and GPU load, we recommend limiting its usage.” See the PRISM desktop performance guide. Avoid choosing maximum settings without checking your machine’s headroom and connection.
Test the closed-lid setup before a long stream
- Confirm your platform: identify the laptop model and operating system, then check the manufacturer’s and OS vendor’s current power guidance for what closing the lid does.
- Set up PRISM for YouTube: connect your YouTube account or use the RTMP details for the intended stream. PRISM describes both account connection and RTMP setup in its desktop FAQ.
- Test the exact configuration: use the lid position, power source, network, and streaming settings planned for the broadcast. Keep the computer on reliable power and use a stable upload connection.
- Monitor the test: check the stream’s audio and video from YouTube, and watch for interruptions or quality problems. YouTube recommends testing and continuous quality monitoring in its live-streaming tips.
- Plan for oversight: arrange for someone or a monitoring plan to spot a failure during a long event. A successful short test is useful, but it does not establish guaranteed 24/7 reliability.
Will YouTube save a 24-hour livestream?
Do not rely on YouTube to archive a stream longer than 12 hours. YouTube Help says: “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” It also warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” This is an archive warning, not evidence that a live stream must stop at 12 hours. If you need a complete replay, make a local recording and check that it is recording and that local storage is sufficient. YouTube also advises checking local archive growth and stopping the encoder after the event has stopped on YouTube, as described in its live-streaming tips.
