The optional disc drive for certain newer Digital Edition consoles does not add CD support either. PS5 supports selected Blu-ray and DVD formats, while music files can be played from a compatible USB drive.
Can a PS5 play an audio CD?
No. PlayStation’s official guidance says PS5 consoles cannot play audio CDs, and its disc-format list marks CD as unsupported. This applies to disc-drive consoles as well as Digital Edition models that can use an add-on drive: having a disc slot does not mean the console supports every optical-disc format.
PlayStation also says PS5 consoles cannot play burned discs. For a DualDisc, the DVD-standard side and audio-only side are different: the audio-only side cannot be played on the console. PlayStation disc troubleshooting guidance and its media-format support page describe these limitations.
Which discs can a PS5 play?
On a PS5 console with a supported disc drive, PlayStation lists these supported formats:

PlayStation lists CD, BD-RE version 1.0, BD-R/RE XL, and unfinalized DVDs as unsupported. Even a supported disc may fail to play if it is damaged or dusty, or because of recording quality or the recording device used.
Can a Digital Edition PS5 use a disc drive for CDs?
No. Compatibility depends on the console model group, but the optional drive does not support audio CDs.

- CFI-1000 Digital Edition: PlayStation says this model group does not support disc-based games or media.
- CFI-2000 Digital Edition and CFI-7000 model-group consoles: PlayStation says these can use the separately sold CFI-ZDD1 series disc drive. Its documented formats include selected Blu-ray and DVD media, but not CDs.
Check the console’s model group before buying an add-on drive, and do not buy one as a way to play music CDs. The CFI-ZDD1 instruction manual lists supported formats and does not include CD.
How to play music files from a USB drive
A USB drive is an option for listening to compatible digital music files; it does not make the PS5 play a physical CD. PlayStation’s instructions support FLAC, MP3, and AAC files, with some files potentially unavailable because of data type or file size. Copyright-protected music files are not supported by the Music app.

- Format the USB drive as exFAT or FAT32.
- Create a folder named
Musicin the drive’s root directory. - Copy compatible FLAC, MP3, or AAC music files into that folder.
- Connect the drive to the PS5, open Music from the control center, and select USB Drive.

Audio-output support is separate from audio-CD playback. In its 2020 PS5 FAQ, PlayStation listed Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS, DTS-HD High Resolution Audio, DTS-HD Master Audio, AAC, and Linear PCM output. It also said Dolby Atmos and DTS:X were available for Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray disc video when connected to supported equipment.
