Yes, it is technically plausible—but there is no documented minimum PC specification that can confirm a particular used computer will handle your stream. Restreamer can publish a configured video source to YouTube from a Docker installation. Whether a used PC can keep that feed running depends on the source and encoding workload, sustained upload speed, and the reliability of local power and internet service. Those factors need to be checked at your location; a model name or one speed test cannot guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 streaming.
What a used PC can—and cannot—be confirmed to do
Restreamer’s documented workflow is to run the service in Docker, configure a video source, and publish it using a valid YouTube stream ID or key. Its setup documentation does not state minimum CPU, RAM, storage, or GPU requirements. It therefore supports the conclusion that a used PC can be a host, but not that any particular used PC is adequate for a particular continuous stream. Restreamer documentation describes the software workflow; no India-specific PC or connection test establishes suitability for your setup.
The key workload distinction is whether the video can be sent through without transcoding or must be encoded again. Encoding can place much more demand on the host. Restreamer’s GPU guide says FFmpeg can use an available GPU for computationally intensive tasks and reduce CPU load, but does not give performance benchmarks or guarantee that a used PC’s GPU can handle a specific resolution and frame rate. Restreamer’s GPU encoding guide is not a hardware compatibility guarantee.
Set up Restreamer with Docker
Restreamer’s Quick Start documents a Docker deployment with persistent configuration and data mounts, exposed ports, and a restart policy. The example uses HTTP/HTTPS ports 80 and 443, mapped to 8080 and 8181, and also exposes RTMP-related ports. Those example mappings are not a requirement to expose every port publicly for a YouTube-only publishing setup. Follow the current Restreamer instructions and expose only the ports your chosen configuration needs.

- Install Docker on the PC. Use Restreamer’s current Quick Start for the supported image and command. Provide persistent configuration and data locations so configuration and stored data survive a container restart.
- Review the port mappings. The documented example maps host ports 8080 and 8181 to the container’s HTTP/HTTPS ports 80 and 443 and includes RTMP-related ports. Do not copy all mappings blindly onto an Internet-facing host; use only those needed for your configuration.
- Use a restart policy. The Quick Start includes one so Docker can restart the container after a process or host restart. This helps with container recovery, but does not protect against a PC, power, internet, or YouTube-side failure.
- Configure your video source and publication. In Restreamer, choose Publication Service, enter the valid YouTube streaming ID/key, save, and start the stream. You need a YouTube channel eligible for live streaming.
Restreamer documents that publishing flow in its YouTube publishing guide and its Docker Quick Start. Interface labels and deployment details can change, so consult the current documentation when installing.
Choose YouTube settings and verify upload headroom
Match encoder settings to the resolution, frame rate, and codec you actually plan to stream. YouTube’s official H.264 recommendations include the following bitrate values; they are platform recommendations, not a guarantee of good service from any particular Indian ISP. YouTube recommends RTMPS, H.264 video, and AAC or MP3 audio for supported encoder settings. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings to verify the recommendations for your chosen output.
Plan for sustained outbound upload capacity, not the headline download speed. YouTube recommends 20% headroom above the total streaming bitrate. For example, a 5 Mbps video bitrate needs at least 6 Mbps of upload capacity under that rule, before allowing for other household traffic. Check your actual outbound speed where the PC will run, test at different times, and account for other users and competing traffic. One speed-test result cannot demonstrate reliable 24/7 service. Check the India-specific factors at your location
The software and YouTube settings do not establish whether a particular Indian city, ISP plan, or building has sufficient continuity for a round-the-clock stream. Before relying on a used PC, check these locally:
- Upload stability: Measure sustained outbound speed at the PC’s location and test during the hours when other household or office traffic is active.
- ISP terms: Review the plan’s data policy, any applicable usage limit, and the provider’s terms for continuous uploads.
- Power continuity: Consider what happens to the PC and network equipment during local interruptions. Docker’s restart policy cannot keep a powered-off host streaming.
- Exact workload: Test the intended source, resolution, frame rate, and whether transcoding is enabled on the actual PC. No published minimum specifications establish a safe used-PC shopping threshold.
Understand the 24/7 archive trade-off
A channel can remain live while YouTube fails to preserve the entire continuous session as a replay. YouTube states: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, and YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. Restreamer separately warns that if its stream is interrupted, YouTube may not save the live stream in its DVR archive; for an event where the archive matters, its guide advises ending the stream on YouTube first. A single always-on session and a complete replay archive are therefore not the same thing. If preserving every segment matters, plan shorter sessions under 12 hours and/or a local recording, and account for how the stream will be ended cleanly. A local recording is a backup to plan for, not a guarantee that YouTube will archive a long session.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. Identified material can result in a placeholder, interruption, or termination. You are responsible for having the rights needed for the material you stream and for legal compliance. This applies to looping music, ambient audio, visuals, and other material as well as to a one-time broadcast. Use original or properly licensed content.
