Yes—you can run datarhei Restreamer on a VPS to publish a live source to YouTube, but a VPS does not by itself guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. Plan for sustained outbound bandwidth based on your encoder bitrate, configure persistent storage and automatic restarts, and account for source, server, network, and YouTube failures.
What you need before setup
- A VPS running an operating system supported by the current Restreamer deployment instructions, with Docker installed.
- A live source for Restreamer to publish. The source and any transcoding you choose determine the CPU or GPU resources needed; do not assume Restreamer encodes every source.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and a valid YouTube stream ID.
- A VPS plan whose permitted continuous use, outbound transfer allowance, sustained network capacity, and overage or throttling policy fit your stream.
No particular VPS provider or instance size is established here. Compare providers against your actual source and settings rather than choosing an instance based on a generic 24/7 recommendation.
Deploy Restreamer on the VPS
Install and persist its data
- Install Docker on your VPS operating system, then follow the current Restreamer quick-start for the deployment command and options.
- Use persistent mounts for
/opt/restreamer/configand/opt/restreamer/data. Persistent storage lets configuration and data survive container replacement or restart. - Use an automatic container restart policy, as shown in the quick-start, so Docker can restart Restreamer after a process or host restart. This helps recovery; it is not an uptime guarantee.
- Expose only the ports needed for the features you actually use. The example mappings in deployment instructions are not a reason to expose every service or administration port to the public internet. Restrict access with the VPS firewall.
Secure administration
Set a unique, strong password rather than keeping a default or reusing a password from another service. If you want public HTTPS administration, configure a public domain and TLS. Restreamer’s network manual says its Let’s Encrypt setup requires one or more public domain names and accessible TCP port 80. A domain is not described as necessary for publishing to YouTube itself. See the Restreamer network documentation for current network details.
Connect Restreamer to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, create or locate a valid stream and copy its stream ID (also commonly called the stream key). Keep it private; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- In Restreamer, open Publication Service, enter the YouTube stream ID, save the configuration, and start the publication.
- Confirm that YouTube receives the feed and reports a healthy stream before relying on it. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement representative of the real broadcast, then monitoring stream health.
- When ending a broadcast where you need YouTube to preserve its DVR archive, end the broadcast from YouTube first. Restreamer warns that interrupting the stream at its end may prevent YouTube from saving the archive.
Follow the current Restreamer YouTube publication instructions and YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance if interface labels or requirements change.

Choose encoder settings and test the stream
YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations include the following bitrate values. They are recommendations for the listed resolution and frame rate, not guarantees that a particular source, network route, or VPS will work reliably at that setting.
| Output | YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (four seconds maximum), and AAC or MP3 audio. Match the settings to the stream you are sending; do not raise resolution or frame rate without checking that your source and the ingest path support it. Test with representative motion and audio, then check YouTube’s stream-health information for warnings or dropped frames.

Estimate bandwidth and monthly transfer
For a single continuous stream, use the selected outgoing encoder bitrate as the baseline for VPS-to-YouTube egress. A constant 1 Mbps transfers approximately 10.8 GB per day, or 324 GB over 30 days, using decimal units and excluding overhead. These are arithmetic estimates, not a provider allowance or measured result.
Calculation: Mbps × 1,000,000 bits/second × 86,400 seconds/day ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000,000,000 = GB/day. Multiply the result by your bitrate and the number of days.

| 10 Mbps | 108 GB | 3.24 TB |
Real use can be higher. Include audio, protocol overhead, bitrate variation, other VPS traffic, and operating headroom. YouTube asks users to test upload bitrate but does not provide a universal headroom multiplier on the cited settings page. If you run several streams, calculate each stream separately and add their expected egress.
Compare VPS plans on the right details
- Sustained outbound capacity: check whether the provider can sustain the bitrate continuously, not just a short burst.
- Included transfer and policy: confirm the monthly allowance, what happens when it is exceeded, and whether traffic is throttled, charged, or stopped.
- Continuous-streaming terms: verify that the provider permits a long-running video stream.
- Network route and region: consider the route from the VPS region to YouTube’s ingest; test the actual stream rather than assuming geography alone predicts performance.
- Firewall control: ensure you can restrict access to administrative services while allowing the ports required by your configuration.
- Compute for transcoding: if your chosen source workflow transcodes, verify the required CPU or GPU capacity. Ingesting and forwarding a source is not the same workload as transcoding it.
What 24/7 operation does—and does not—mean
Restreamer documents attempts to reconnect when a stream connection drops, persistence of the desired connected or disconnected state on disk, and restoration of that state after reboot. The browser does not need to remain open. These behaviors can reduce manual intervention for some interruptions, but they do not guarantee end-to-end uptime.

A VPS host or network can fail; YouTube ingest can have an issue; the input source can stop; and configuration or software faults can interrupt publication. No provider SLA has been established here. Treat automatic restart and reconnect as recovery mechanisms, not substitutes for monitoring and a plan for source or infrastructure failure.
Keep YouTube policy in view
Technical delivery does not establish that a broadcast complies with YouTube rules. Use only content you have rights to stream, including music and other audio, and review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream policies before scheduling a continuous broadcast. A stream that is technically healthy may still be restricted or removed for policy or rights reasons.

Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Restreamer does not return after a reboot | Container restart policy, Docker service, or missing persistent configuration | Check that Docker is running, verify the container restart policy, and confirm the config and data mounts point to persistent storage. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Invalid stream ID, unsaved publication configuration, or blocked outbound connection | Recheck the YouTube stream ID in Publication Service, save the settings, start publication, and inspect VPS firewall and connection errors. |
| YouTube reports unstable bitrate or dropped frames | Insufficient sustained egress, route congestion, or an encoder setting unsupported by the source/path | Test the actual bitrate and stream-health status; reduce output bitrate or resolution if necessary, and verify the provider’s sustained bandwidth and transfer policy. |
| Stream stops when the source stops | Input-source failure | Restore or replace the source and confirm it remains available; Restreamer cannot publish frames that its input does not provide. |
| Administration is exposed more broadly than intended | Public port mappings or permissive firewall rules | Close unneeded ports, restrict administration access, use a strong unique password, and configure HTTPS if public administration is required. |
| YouTube archive is missing after ending | Broadcast was interrupted rather than ended through YouTube | For future broadcasts where archive preservation matters, end the broadcast from YouTube before interrupting the Restreamer stream. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel playing uploaded videos rather than managing a VPS and a live source, StreamNeo is the simpler alternative to try first: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. For five or more slots, contact support. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Restreamer itself encode every stream?
No. Source ingest and any transcoding choices determine whether and how much CPU or GPU capacity is needed.
Does a domain name make YouTube streaming work?
A domain is described as a requirement for Restreamer’s Let’s Encrypt HTTPS administration setup, not for the YouTube publication path itself.
