The two recovery rules at a glance
The action you took determines whether there is anything left to recover. A vendor sale places the item in a temporary Buyback list. Salvaging sends the item through the blacksmith’s destruction process instead; it does not place a copy in a recovery list.

There is no published percentage or item-count statistic that predicts recovery. The practical question is simply whether the armor is still in the selling vendor’s Buyback list or has been salvaged or purged.
How to recover armor you sold
Use this sequence before doing anything else with your inventory:

- Stop your cleanup. Do not continue selling or changing equipment while you check. The important distinction is whether the item still appears in Buyback.
- Return to the vendor that bought the armor. Blizzard’s Diablo IV support guidance directs players to the selling vendor’s Buyback area. Start with the exact vendor used for the sale rather than assuming another vendor will show the same list.
- Open the Buyback tab. Inspect the temporary list for the armor. Compare the item’s name and appearance with the piece you meant to keep before spending currency on a replacement.
- Repurchase the item if it is listed. Buyback is the recovery method for a vendor sale; once the purchase completes, the armor returns to your inventory through the normal vendor transaction.
- Check before leaving the session. The list is temporary, and Blizzard’s guidance does not promise a fixed retention period. Treat an available listing as a time-sensitive opportunity rather than something that will remain indefinitely.
What if the armor is not in Buyback?
If the item no longer appears, the published Diablo IV guidance provides no second recovery method. Search the correct selling vendor once more, verify that you are looking at Buyback rather than the regular purchase inventory, and then accept that the item is not currently recoverable if it remains absent. Do not assume that opening a support ticket will recreate it: Blizzard’s stated recovery rule covers repurchasing a listed sale, not restoring a missing Buyback entry.
Why checking immediately matters
Buyback is designed as a temporary safety net for a mistaken sale, not as permanent storage. Leaving the vendor, continuing normal inventory activity, or simply waiting can allow the listing to disappear. Because no exact duration is stated in the available support guidance, the safest procedure is to go straight back to the vendor before resuming other activities.
What happens when you salvage armor
Salvaging and selling are different inventory actions even though both can happen during cleanup. When you choose salvage at the blacksmith, the armor is recycled and the item itself is destroyed. It is not held in Buyback, and Diablo IV has no player-facing undo command that reverses the salvage transaction.

Salvage cannot be restored by Customer Support
Blizzard’s Diablo IV support guidance explicitly says that Customer Support cannot restore items that were deleted or salvaged. That means a mistaken salvage is final under the published policy, whether the armor was valuable, newly acquired, upgraded, or kept for a future build.
The same rule applies if the armor is described as purged or deleted after the destructive action. The useful distinction is not how much the item was worth but what happened to its item record: a sale can leave a temporary vendor listing, while salvage removes the item through the blacksmith process.
Do not look for a hidden salvage history
Buyback is associated with vendor sales. It is not a universal inventory history and does not provide a parallel list for blacksmith salvage. If you open a vendor and do not see a salvaged piece, that is expected behavior rather than a display error that support can generally repair.

Why other Blizzard restoration advice can be confusing
Blizzard also publishes a general Item Restoration article. That page discusses restoration systems for some other Blizzard games and warns that purged items disappear permanently. It should not be read as a promise that Diablo IV salvage can be undone.

For this question, the Diablo IV-specific instructions control: use Buyback for a sold item that is still listed, and do not expect restoration for an item that was salvaged or otherwise purged. A restoration feature described for another game’s inventory, mail, or deletion system may have different rules, retention periods, or eligibility requirements.
What “purged” means in this context
Purged is Blizzard’s term for an item that has been removed rather than left in an accessible recovery list. Blizzard’s published wording is direct: Customer Support cannot assist with recovering purged items.
In practical terms, a salvaged armor piece falls on the permanent-loss side of the distinction, not the temporary Buyback side.

How to prevent an accidental sale or salvage
Favorite valuable gear before cleanup
Favorite an item before visiting a vendor or blacksmith when you intend to keep it. A Blizzard-hosted Diablo IV forum discussion explains that favoriting prevents the item from being sold or salvaged. This turns the protection into a step you take before the risky action, rather than a recovery attempt afterward.
Use a deliberate cleanup order
- Identify keepers first. Mark armor you are wearing, testing, saving for another character or build, or holding for a later decision as favorite.
- Separate sales from salvage. Decide whether an unwanted piece should be sold or salvaged before selecting any items. Do not treat the two buttons as interchangeable.
- Review the selected list. Look for an equipped or high-value piece among the items queued for the transaction.
- Complete one transaction at a time when uncertain. If you are unsure about an item, leave it out of the batch and inspect it later.
- Verify after cleanup. Confirm that your kept armor is still in the inventory or equipped before moving on.
Why favoriting is more reliable than memory
Inventory sessions often combine equipment changes, vendor sales and blacksmith salvage. A favorite marker provides an explicit safeguard against both destructive choices. Relying on item names, icons or memory alone leaves no equivalent protection if you misclick; once salvage occurs, support cannot restore the result.
Troubleshooting the most common situations
“I sold it a moment ago and cannot find it.”
Return to the exact vendor used for the sale and open Buyback. If the armor is listed, repurchase it there. If it is not listed, check that you are on the Buyback tab and have not switched to a different vendor. The official guidance does not provide another restoration route for a missing listing.

“I sold it, then immediately salvaged other gear.”
Those are separate actions. The sold armor may still be recoverable through the selling vendor’s Buyback list, while the pieces you salvaged are permanently destroyed. Check Buyback first; do not infer the status of one item from what happened to another.
“I clicked salvage by mistake.”
Stop looking for a Buyback entry. Salvage is the irreversible case under Blizzard’s Diablo IV policy, and Customer Support cannot restore the salvaged item. The practical next step is to replace the gear through normal gameplay rather than waiting for a support rollback that the policy does not offer.
“A general Blizzard page says items can be restored.”
Confirm which game and system that page addresses. General restoration documentation can cover other Blizzard titles, but it does not override Diablo IV’s specific rule for salvaged or purged items. Use the Diablo IV Buyback instruction only for a vendor sale that remains listed.

Check the selling vendor’s Buyback tab first because that is the only one of the two states with an in-game recovery path. If no listing appears, the available guidance cannot establish a further way to recover the armor; a completed salvage is treated as permanent loss.
A simple decision path
- Was the armor sold to a vendor? Return to that vendor and inspect Buyback immediately.
- Is it listed? Repurchase it before leaving the vendor.
- Is it absent? The Diablo IV guidance gives no additional recovery method for a missing Buyback entry.
- Was the armor salvaged at the blacksmith? Treat it as permanently destroyed; Customer Support cannot restore it.
- Are you unsure what happened? Check Buyback once, then avoid assuming that a general restoration article applies to Diablo IV.
What this means for your next inventory session
The safest habit is preventative: favorite anything you may keep, pause before confirming a sale or salvage, and check the selling vendor immediately after an accidental sale. Buyback can rescue a listed vendor sale, but it is temporary and has no published guaranteed duration. Blacksmith salvage has no equivalent safety net, and Blizzard’s policy does not provide a support-based restoration for the resulting loss.
