Can Someone Steal Your Stuff in Fallout 76? What’s Safe—and What Isn’t

Your Fallout 76 S.T.A.S.H. and Scrapbox are private, but carried junk can drop in a lootable bag when you die. Here’s what other players can take and how to reduce the risk.

Usually, no: other players cannot open your personal C.A.M.P. S.T.A.S.H. or Scrapbox, or take items from your display cases and mannequins. But junk you carry can drop in a lootable bag when you die, and some unlocked C.A.M.P. resource objects can be accessed by other players. Those are the main ways your belongings can end up in someone else’s hands.

What other players can and cannot take

Where the item is Can another player take it? What to know
Your C.A.M.P. S.T.A.S.H. or Scrapbox No, according to Bethesda Support These personal storage containers are not shared with other players. [Bethesda Support]
Your display cases or mannequins No, according to Bethesda Support Other players cannot access the displayed items through these objects. [Bethesda Support]
Junk you are carrying when you die Yes It drops in a bag that players and nearby creatures can loot. [Bethesda Support]
C.A.M.P. resource objects, such as Water Purifiers or Collectrons Potentially Some can be locked, but a player may still access one by picking its lock. This is separate from personal storage. [Bethesda Support]

So when a player says an item was “stolen,” it may mean they lost carried junk after dying, left a resource object accessible, or dropped an item for someone else to collect. That is different from another player opening their S.T.A.S.H. or Scrapbox.

What happens to your items when you die?

Bethesda says all junk your character is carrying when they die drops in a bag. Other players and nearby mobs can loot it, and the bag may be deleted if you log off or do not retrieve it quickly. Bethesda also says weapons, ammunition, holotapes, aid, and armor are not dropped on death. [Bethesda Support]

If another player kills you, the bag can be collected by anyone before you return. [Vault 76 Handbook: Dealing with Aggressive Survivors]

Fallout 76: Wastelanders - Xbox One
  • New Main Quest: Uncover the secrets of West Virginia by playing through an all-new main quest, starting from the moment you leave Vault 76.
  • Human NPCs: Befriend or betray new neighbors who have come to rebuild, and experience Appalachia through the eyes of its residents.
  • New Creatures and Gear: Take down newly mutated creatures finding their way to the region and earn the highest tier of weapons and armor.
  • Choices and Reputation: Alter the fates of those you meet with dialogue trees. Decisions affect your standing with each faction through an all-new reputation system.

How PvP affects the risk

Adventure Mode PvP interactions unlock at level 5, according to Bethesda. An attack does not deal damage until the other player reciprocates; contesting an owned Workshop is treated as hostile. [Bethesda Support]

PvP is one possible route to losing carried junk, but it is not the only one: the important protection is where the junk is when you die. The game’s PvP rules do not make a carried junk bag private once it drops.

Fallout 76: Microsoft Xbox One (Renewed)
  • Bethesda Game Studios, the award-winning creators of Skyrim and Fallout 4, welcome you to Fallout 76, the online prequel where every surviving human is a real person. Work together, or not, to survive. Under the threat of nuclear annihilation, you’ll experience the largest, most dynamic world ever created in the legendary Fallout universe
  • Reclamation Day, 2102. Twenty-five years after the bombs fall, you and your fellow Vault Dwellers—chosen from the nation’s best and brightest – emerge into post-nuclear America. Play solo or join together as you explore, quest, build, and triumph against the wasteland’s greatest threats

How to protect your belongings

  • Store valuable junk in your S.T.A.S.H. when practical. Bethesda describes Stash as the safe place to store your stuff and warns against leaving items elsewhere. [Bethesda Support]
  • Use the built-in Trading system for player-to-player exchanges. Do not drop items on the ground as a trade handoff; Bethesda warns that dropped items can be lost. [Bethesda Support]
  • Lock resource objects such as a Water Purifier when you want to limit access, but remember a lock can be picked. [Bethesda Support]
  • Do not rely on item locks to preserve carried junk. Bethesda’s public test server item-locking announcement describes locks as protection against accidental sale, scrapping, or trading, and explicitly says they do not prevent junk loss on death. [Fallout.Bethesda.net]

Can Bethesda restore items taken by another player?

Bethesda Support says it cannot restore lost junk. That is why the safest response is prevention: keep junk in Stash when you can, and avoid leaving an item in a dropped bag or other exposed location. [Bethesda Support]

What this does—and does not—establish

Bethesda’s support guidance explains normal access rules and the known risks above; it does not establish whether a rare exploit exists in every live-game build. The practical distinction remains clear: personal storage is not accessible to other players under Bethesda’s stated rules, while carried junk after death and accessible resource objects are not protected in the same way.
