Yes—but not directly. Fish in the Snow/Ice biome to catch Frozen Crates before Hardmode or Boreal Crates in Hardmode, then open them for a chance at Ice Skates. The Official Terraria Wiki lists a 1-in-6 chance per relevant crate opened; that is not the chance per fishing attempt.
How to get Ice Skates from fishing
- Go to the Snow/Ice biome and fish. Fishing can yield biome crates; the crate-catching roll is separate from the item drop roll. The Official Terraria Wiki’s fishing guide explains the crate mechanics.
- Choose the crate that matches your progression: catch Frozen Crates before Hardmode, or Boreal Crates in Hardmode. The Official Terraria Wiki’s crate guide identifies these as the Snow/Ice biome crates for their respective stages.
- Open the crate. Ice Skates are among the possible contents.
What does the 1-in-6 chance mean?
The Official Terraria Wiki lists Ice Skates at a 1-in-6 (16.67%) chance from a Frozen or Boreal Crate. This is the chance when opening one of those crates—not the chance to catch a crate on a cast, nor the chance of getting Ice Skates per fishing attempt. Because fishing first has to produce the relevant biome crate, the sources do not establish one overall chance per cast. Each crate is a random outcome, so opening six does not guarantee the item.

Fishing or searching Frozen Chests?
Ice Skates can also be found in Frozen Chests in the Ice biome, according to the Official Terraria Wiki’s Ice Skates page. Fishing lets you target the biome’s crates; chest searching is the other route. The available information does not establish which method is faster in general, so choose based on whether you would rather fish for crates or explore for chests.
Why get Ice Skates?
Ice Skates are a pre-Hardmode accessory that improve movement control on ice and prevent Thin Ice from breaking when you land on it. They are also crafting ingredients for Frostspark Boots and Arctic Diving Gear. The item page lists these effects and crafting uses.
