ZERO a favorite for players who want to revisit the series through different characters, unlock alternate outcomes, and build their own battles with story framing. Its Episode Battle and Custom Battle modes offer more than a single linear retelling—but they do not prove the game covers every major story arc or is objectively the best Dragon Ball game ever.
What is Sparking! ZERO’s story mode?
The main story-focused mode is Episode Battle. Rather than follow one protagonist through a single continuous campaign, it lets players revisit Dragon Ball story moments from the perspectives of eight characters: Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Piccolo, Jiren, Future Trunks, Goku Black, and Frieza. Bandai Namco says campaign lengths vary by character. Bandai Namco’s game overview describes the mode and its character campaigns.

That structure is a good fit for fans interested in how familiar events look from different sides. It is not, on its own, evidence that every character receives equal coverage or that the game retells the entire franchise from beginning to end.
How Episode Battle’s What If paths work
Episode Battle includes alternate story paths, often called What If scenarios. Bandai Namco says player skill and choices can unlock different paths, while the official Dragon Ball site notes that certain stages have conditions that branch into What If scenarios. In practice, do not assume every choice opens a fork: some branches depend on meeting a specific condition during a stage.

- Engage in heart-pounding, high-speed 3D battles that stay true to the anime and video game series
- This game contains breathtaking visuals and authentic combat moves like beam clashes, rush attacks, and movements too quick for the eyes to see
- Step into an arena that reacts to your every action including planet-razing ultimate attacks
- Watch the environment respond with stunning realism, and leave a trail of destruction in your wake as you battle to your heart’s content
These branches give players a reason to revisit parts of a character’s campaign and see how events change. They are alternate outcomes within the mode, not a guarantee that every episode has multiple routes.
Custom Battle lets players create scenarios
Custom Battle is distinct from Episode Battle’s authored character campaigns. The official Dragon Ball site describes it as a mode for creating an original story. That makes it the more flexible option for players who want to assemble their own Dragon Ball-style confrontations, rather than follow the game’s retelling.

- UK PSN Account Requirement: UK PSN account may be required for any online features
- Legendary Budokai Tenkaichi Gameplay: Experience the iconic gameplay of the Budokai Tenkaichi series elevated to new heights with enhanced mechanics and controls
- Extensive Character Roster: Learn and master an incredible roster of playable characters, each with signature abilities, transformations, and techniques
- Authentic Dragon Ball Combat: Harness the destructive power of the strongest fighters ever to appear in DRAGON BALL with faithful recreations of their abilities
- Regional Compatibility: Physical game disc compatible with PlayStation 5 consoles in UK PAL regions
Together, the two modes serve different kinds of storytelling: Episode Battle offers established characters and branching outcomes, while Custom Battle puts scenario creation in the player’s hands. The sources establish the creation feature, but do not establish how much story content any individual player will make or how it compares in scope with the authored campaigns.
Why these features could make it a standout
- Multiple character perspectives: Eight campaigns let players approach story moments through heroes and antagonists rather than through Goku alone.
- Replayable alternatives: Conditions and choices can lead to What If paths, adding outcomes beyond the main route.
- Room for player invention: Custom Battle allows original scenarios, extending the story experience beyond the authored episodes.
For a fighting game, those are meaningful story-oriented features. A fan who values alternate outcomes and creative freedom may find this a particularly satisfying Dragon Ball package, even if another game better suits someone seeking a continuously narrated adventure.

What “best Dragon Ball game ever” depends on
There is no objective ranking established by the mode descriptions. A fair comparison with other Dragon Ball games should consider what kind of story experience you want, rather than treat roster size or the number of viewpoints as proof of narrative completeness.
| What to compare | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Story coverage and continuity | How much of the franchise story does the game cover, and how coherently does it connect those events? |
| Branching replay value | Do alternate paths make you want to replay stages and campaigns? |
| Creative freedom | Would you rather play authored scenarios or create your own? |
| Play style | Do you want arena fighting, or a more continuously narrated story-driven adventure? |
The publisher lists 182 characters on its overview page, but that is a roster count, not a measure of story length or coverage. Bandai Namco’s overview gives the figure without specifying a year on that page.

Base game and story DLC are different
The base game was released on October 11, 2024, according to the official Dragon Ball site. As of October 8, 2026, Bandai Namco says the Super Limit-Breaking NEO DLC is available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC; Switch and Switch 2 versions are scheduled for a later date. The DLC adds four Episode Battles, Extra Battles, and four stages, according to Bandai Namco Europe. These additions are DLC, not a reason to assume the base game includes them. Check the current platform listing if availability matters.
Bandai Namco Europe gives the DLC’s release date as July 30, 2026, and says it also adds 33 characters. That character figure describes the add-on, not the base-game roster. The publisher’s announcement has the platform and content details.
