Yes—but SRS is not the playlist player. A typical no-OBS setup uses FFmpeg to read and publish the video, with SRS acting as an optional media-server relay before YouTube. For a simple file-to-YouTube stream, FFmpeg can send the feed directly to YouTube and SRS may not be needed. You still need a running encoder process, the current YouTube ingest URL and stream key, and a playlist workflow verified for your files.
What SRS does—and what it does not do
SRS is a media server, not a turnkey scheduler that loads a video playlist and sends it to YouTube. Its documentation demonstrates FFmpeg publishing a local media file to an RTMP endpoint hosted by SRS. In that arrangement, FFmpeg handles the media input and publishing; SRS receives the feed and serves as a server or relay. SRS RTMP documentation describes the publishing example and version-specific RTMPS server support.
That distinction matters: putting a playlist file on an SRS server does not, by itself, establish that SRS will interpret the list, move to the next item, loop it, and publish the result. The exact playlist command depends on its format, the files’ paths and media streams, and whether the workflow can copy compatible codecs or must re-encode.
Choose the simplest architecture that meets your needs
| Route | What sends the video | When it makes sense | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct FFmpeg → YouTube | FFmpeg reads the media and publishes to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. | You do not need SRS as an intermediate server. | The computer running FFmpeg must stay on, have access to the media, and maintain a suitable network connection. You must configure the output for YouTube. |
| FFmpeg → SRS → YouTube | FFmpeg publishes to SRS; SRS then has to forward or publish the feed onward to YouTube. | You specifically need an SRS media-server or relay role in your design. | It adds server configuration, network and operational requirements. The exact forwarding recipe depends on the SRS release and configuration. |
The SRS references establish the FFmpeg-to-SRS publishing relationship, but not a complete, version-specific SRS-to-YouTube forwarding recipe. YouTube’s encoder workflow establishes the destination URL and key, but does not make SRS forwarding automatic. For an ordinary local playlist, direct FFmpeg-to-YouTube avoids adding a relay you may not need. SRS introduction describes the project as a media server and its client/server workflow.

Set up YouTube before configuring the publisher
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to test. Choose a privacy setting appropriate for the test, such as unlisted if available for your account and stream.
- Copy the current stream URL and stream key from the stream’s encoder settings. The URL is the destination; the key identifies and authorizes your feed. YouTube documents this encoder setup in its live encoder instructions and Live Control Room settings guidance.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password. Do not put it in a public command, screenshot, shared config, or log. If it is exposed, manage or rotate the key through Live Control Room.
- Check YouTube’s current encoder requirements for your chosen codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. YouTube recommends RTMPS; use it when your encoder and route support it. Do not choose a bitrate in isolation: YouTube’s guidance varies with codec, resolution, and frame rate. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
Build and verify the playlist workflow
The SRS example command is a single-file demonstration, not a safe universal playlist command. It shows FFmpeg publishing a local file to SRS with stream copy, but does not establish how to repeat a playlist, handle transitions between differently encoded files, or meet YouTube’s output settings. Do not substitute that example for a verified end-to-end playlist configuration.
- Identify the playlist format and media files. Confirm whether the list is an FFmpeg-compatible playlist or another format, that every referenced path resolves from the machine running FFmpeg, and that the intended ordering and repeat behavior are explicit.
- Inspect the files’ streams. Check video and audio codecs, dimensions, frame rates, audio presence, and timing. Stream copy is only appropriate when the inputs and output requirements are compatible; mixed formats or incompatible streams may require transcoding and a deliberate output configuration.
- Decide whether SRS is actually needed. For direct publishing, configure FFmpeg to send the verified playlist output to YouTube’s current ingest URL and key. For an SRS route, first configure and test FFmpeg publishing to SRS, then separately configure and verify SRS forwarding to YouTube for your exact SRS release. The cited SRS example does not supply that complete forwarding setup.
- Run a private test before relying on it. Use representative video motion and audio, inspect YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators, and verify that the playlist advances and repeats as intended. Confirm that the output remains stable across file transitions.
- Test interruption and recovery. Observe what happens if the encoder, SRS service, network, or YouTube connection drops. Confirm how your chosen software resumes and whether YouTube accepts the returning feed before making the setup public.
Do not confuse YouTube HLS ingest with an ordinary playlist
YouTube’s HLS ingest is a protocol-specific delivery method, not simply a matter of supplying a playlist file. Its requirements include HTTPS POST/PUT requests, MPEG-TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, and a rolling playlist with no more than 5 outstanding segments. These are YouTube-published protocol limits, not general settings for every RTMP(S) stream. An ordinary media playlist or SRS-generated HLS output should not be assumed compliant without checking the actual encoder and output configuration. See YouTube’s HLS ingest requirements.

Common problems and what to check
- YouTube does not receive video: Check that the encoder is sending to the current ingest URL, the key is correct and active, and the selected transport matches the endpoint. Review the encoder output and Live Control Room status.
- FFmpeg can publish to SRS but YouTube stays offline: Publishing to SRS only proves the first connection. Check that a separate SRS forwarding or publishing configuration exists, is valid for your SRS version, and points to YouTube’s current URL and key.
- The first file works but the next one fails: Compare the files’ codecs, stream layout, frame rate, and audio. A stream-copy workflow may not handle incompatible transitions; verify whether transcoding or normalizing the inputs is needed.
- The playlist does not loop or advance: Check the playlist format, path resolution, and repeat behavior in the actual FFmpeg configuration. The SRS single-file example does not demonstrate playlist scheduling.
- The feed is unstable or has poor quality: Check the network connection and compare the configured codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate against YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Test with representative motion and sound rather than a static clip alone.
- The stream key appears in a log or screenshot: Treat it as exposed and replace or rotate it in Live Control Room; do not reuse a publicly disclosed key.
Operational details to check before going live
YouTube advises testing the encoder and monitoring stream health. Its help guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; check Live Control Room for the current behavior and archive status of your particular stream. A 24/7 operation should not assume that an archived stream will remain one uninterrupted recording indefinitely. See YouTube’s encoder setup and streaming guidance.
- Keep the source files available to the machine running the publisher for the full stream.
- Secure the YouTube key anywhere it is stored, and restrict access to server configs and logs.
- Check copyright permissions for every video and audio track in the playlist. A live feed is not exempt from YouTube’s copyright rules.
- Review YouTube’s monetization and reused-content policies separately if you plan to monetize; technical ability to loop content does not establish policy eligibility.
Or let it run in the cloud
