If your SRS-to-YouTube stream keeps dropping, don’t start by changing bitrate. First work out whether the failure is in the encoder, SRS, YouTube’s ingest connection, the outbound network, or only a viewer’s connection. Then compare timestamps across the relevant logs and check the RTMP or RTMPS endpoint YouTube currently gives you.
Why does my YouTube stream keep disconnecting?
A stream travels through several links: the encoder publishes to SRS, SRS handles the stream, and the outgoing feed reaches YouTube’s ingest server before viewers receive it. A break anywhere in that chain can look like a YouTube disconnection. A viewer-side playback problem can also be mistaken for a creator-side failure.
Start by establishing who is affected. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide distinguishes a problem reported by one viewer, many viewers sharing one internet connection, and viewers on different connections. One affected viewer points first to that viewer’s device or network; a shared-network problem points toward that connection; reports from viewers on different networks can indicate an encoder issue. These clues narrow the search, but do not prove the cause.
Why does OBS keep disconnecting and reconnecting to YouTube?
OBS is only one part of the publishing chain. A reconnect message may originate in the encoder, the SRS process, the connection from SRS to YouTube, or the network carrying that traffic. If OBS publishes to SRS, check both ends of that link; if SRS sends the stream onward, inspect its outbound connection separately. Don’t assume a reconnect alone identifies a weak home internet connection.

Diagnose the failure in order
1. Check whether the creator or viewers see the failure
- Confirm whether the encoder reports a disconnect or whether only playback reports are affected.
- Ask whether reports come from one viewer, several viewers on the same network, or viewers on separate networks.
- Record the time of each interruption, including time zone, so you can compare encoder, SRS, and YouTube events.
2. Inspect the encoder’s local output
Make sure the encoder software is current, then check its preview and any available local recording. If picture or sound is already poor locally, investigate the source, encoder errors, and CPU load before blaming the YouTube connection. YouTube suggests trying a different encoder if a local archive looks clean but the live symptoms continue.
If the local output looks and sounds healthy, move downstream to SRS and the outgoing connection. YouTube’s guidance puts it plainly: “If your stream looks and sounds healthy, there may be an issue with your outbound Internet connection.”

3. Check the SRS process and logs
Verify that the SRS process is still running, then inspect its logs around the recorded interruption times. The SRS Linux service overview demonstrates checking process status and following objs/srs.log, and includes an example of publishing to an SRS RTMP URL. That page is v3-era documentation: use it as an illustration of the checks, not as version-specific configuration advice. The installation method and deployment determine the actual service name, log location, and commands.
Look for an SRS restart or exit, a publishing disconnect, and messages at the exact time the stream failed. Preserve the relevant surrounding log lines, but redact stream keys and other credentials before sharing them.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
4. Verify YouTube’s current ingest URL and protocol
Open YouTube Live Control Room and use the server URL and stream key shown for the stream; do not rely on an endpoint copied from an old setup. For RTMPS, YouTube’s RTMPS setup instructions say to obtain the RTMPS URL, copy the stream key, and configure the encoder with the correct protocol.
- SSL certificate error: Check that the scheme and server are both set for RTMPS. YouTube says to try specifying port 443 for certain SSL errors.
- Connection timeout: Confirm the URL and verify that the encoder supports RTMPS.
Treat the stream key like a password. Don’t include it in screenshots, public logs, issue reports, or messages to people helping diagnose the fault. If it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the publishing setup that uses it.

5. Test the outbound network path
If the encoder’s local picture and sound are healthy, test the connection used to send the stream outward. YouTube recommends contacting the internet provider if its connection test reveals a problem. If you can do so safely, compare a wired Ethernet connection with Wi-Fi while keeping the encoder, SRS settings, and stream otherwise unchanged. That comparison is a general diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix: it can help isolate Wi-Fi conditions but cannot rule out other network or server causes.
6. Correlate errors before changing settings
Compare timestamps from the encoder, SRS, and YouTube rather than changing several settings at once. A single SRS GitHub report describes repeated RTMP reconnects in an SRS 4.0.268 and DJI M30 setup, with an invalid avc sample length=0 error during HLS video handling: SRS issue 3632. The report is one device-specific case from 2023, not evidence that this error explains SRS disconnects generally. Its author noted that the problem reproduced on apparently good Wi-Fi but could not rule out internet quality or device bandwidth.

What information to collect before changing configuration
- SRS version and deployment type, including whether it runs on a local machine or hosted server.
- Encoder name and version, and whether it publishes directly to YouTube or to SRS first.
- The exact error message from the encoder, SRS, or YouTube, with timestamps and time zone.
- Whether the encoder preview or local recording is also affected.
- Whether the creator sees a publishing failure and whether affected viewers share a network.
- The ingest protocol in use (RTMP or RTMPS) and whether the endpoint matches the current YouTube Live Control Room setting. Never share the stream key.
There is no established universal bitrate, port, or encoder setting that fixes every SRS-to-YouTube disconnect. The reviewed sources also do not establish what share of these failures comes from networking, RTMP settings, or encoder faults, so a cause should be tied to evidence from the affected setup.
