Results depend on the game, its current Steam Deck compatibility rating, graphics settings and your frame-rate expectations. Valve publishes hardware specifications and compatibility ratings, not guaranteed frame rates for individual games.
What “run” means on Steam Deck
There are two separate questions when you ask whether a game will run: will it start and function, and will it perform smoothly at settings you find acceptable? Valve’s Deck Verified program assesses compatibility, including controls, display, seamlessness and system support. It does not promise a particular frame rate. A game can be compatible and still require lower graphics settings or a frame-rate target that suits its performance.
Valve describes the device as “a portable gaming PC” on its Deck Verified page. That flexibility does not make it equivalent to a high-powered desktop: the Deck is built around a low-power APU and a 1280×800 screen.
How much graphics power does it have?
Valve lists both Steam Deck models with an AMD RDNA 2 GPU featuring 8 compute units, a 1.6 GHz clock and 1.6 TFLOPS FP32. The OLED model’s listed APU power range is 4–15 W. These are hardware specifications, not measured game results, so they cannot tell you the frame rate a specific release will reach.
#1 Best Overall
- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
Both models have a native resolution of 1280×800. That is a less demanding target than many desktop gaming resolutions, but the Deck’s limited graphics budget still means demanding games may need reduced settings. The OLED screen supports up to 90 Hz and the LCD up to 60 Hz; those are screen refresh-rate ceilings, not promises that a demanding game will render at those frame rates.
Steam Deck OLED vs. LCD: published specifications
Valve’s technical specifications, accessed October 8, 2026, list the following differences. Both models share the listed CPU and GPU configuration; the specifications do not establish an OLED advantage in game frame rate.

Check a game’s current compatibility rating
Valve assigns reviewed games one of four labels. Look up the exact title on its Steam store page or in your library; ratings can change as games and their updates change.
Rank #3
- Operating System: SteamOS 3.0
- Verified: Works well out of the box under Valve’s criteria.
- Playable: Works, but may need adjustments, such as changing settings or using a different control method.
- Unsupported: Currently does not function on Steam Deck according to Valve’s review.
- Unknown: Valve has not yet checked the game.
For games that use Proton, Valve’s review criteria include support for the game and its middleware, including anti-cheat. A Verified label is useful evidence about compatibility, not an FPS guarantee. Conversely, an Unknown label means the game has not been reviewed; it does not by itself establish how well or whether it will run.
What to check before choosing a high-end game
- Find the exact game’s current rating. Check its Steam store page or your Steam library, rather than relying on an old compatibility report.
- Separate compatibility from performance. The rating tells you about Valve’s compatibility criteria, not how many frames per second to expect.
- Set realistic expectations for graphics and frame rate. The 1280×800 display can help keep the rendering target modest, but demanding games may still need lower settings. The hardware specifications alone cannot predict a title’s result.
- Look for current, game-specific testing if you need an FPS estimate. A useful benchmark should identify the Steam Deck model, game and SteamOS versions, resolution, settings, and whether testing was handheld or connected to an external display.
Does OLED or a dock make demanding games faster?
The OLED and LCD models have the same listed CPU and GPU configuration, and Valve’s specifications do not establish an FPS advantage for OLED. OLED differs in its screen, APU process, memory speed, battery capacity and wireless specification; those published differences should not be treated as proof of higher game performance.
Rank #4
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
A dock or USB-C hub connects displays and peripherals; Valve’s product information does not describe it as adding graphics power. Connecting an external display therefore does not upgrade the Deck’s rendering capability. Valve describes the OLED model and its connections on the Steam Deck OLED overview.
Can a Steam Deck play AAA games?
Some AAA games can run on Steam Deck, but “AAA” is not a compatibility or performance rating. Check the current rating for the particular game and consult recent, appropriately detailed testing if you need to know whether it meets your preferred settings and frame rate. Valve’s official specifications support a hardware overview, not a title-by-title promise.
