Yes—Steam Frame can run supported Steam games locally, without a gaming PC. But standalone compatibility is selective, not the whole Steam library. For games that are not supported locally, Steam Frame can stream from a host PC, which still has to run the game.
How Steam Frame runs games
Valve describes Steam Frame as a streaming-first headset that is also a SteamOS PC with standalone capabilities. It has a Snapdragon 8 Series processor, 16GB of unified RAM, and 256GB or 1TB storage options, according to Valve’s Steam Frame product page. Those specifications describe the hardware; they do not guarantee that a particular Steam game will run locally or perform well.

Which Steam games work without a PC?
Valve says standalone play supports a growing number of VR and non-VR games, rather than promising compatibility with every title. Check the specific game’s Steam Frame Standalone Verified status before relying on local play. Valve’s Steamworks Development announcement says the standalone review considers performance, readable text and interface, and default controller behavior.
Valve has not established a percentage or total number of Steam games that run standalone in the cited product information. Compatibility can change, so verify the current listing for each game you want to play.

When a gaming PC is still needed
In streaming mode, the game runs on a connected PC and Steam Frame receives its video and audio. Valve’s Steam Remote Play page describes this host-to-device streaming arrangement. Streaming therefore does not mean the headset is running that game locally: the host PC remains necessary.
Valve says foveated streaming typically offers over a 10x improvement in image quality and effective bandwidth. That is Valve’s claim about streaming, not a standalone compatibility measure or evidence that a game can run without a PC.

What to check before choosing a play mode
- Want to play without a PC? Confirm that each title is listed as Steam Frame Standalone Verified.
- Your game is not verified for standalone? Plan to stream it from a compatible host PC rather than assuming it will run locally.
- Considering hardware specs? Treat the processor, RAM, and storage as device specifications, not a substitute for checking game-specific support.
