Can SteamOS run Android games and apps? Not natively on Steam Deck. The community-maintained Waydroid project offers an unofficial workaround for running Android in a Linux environment, but setup depends on your SteamOS build and no specific app or game is guaranteed to work. Valve’s Android runtime documentation for Steam Frame describes a separate device, not Steam Deck.
Can you install an Android APK on Steam Deck?
SteamOS is Linux-based, and Valve documents installing software in Desktop Mode, but its Steam Deck documentation does not describe a built-in Android runtime. An APK therefore is not something Steam Deck can simply install and run by itself. Waydroid is a separate Android environment for Linux; its documentation covers installing and launching Android applications, while a third-party project provides an installer aimed at SteamOS and Steam Deck.
Waydroid is not a Valve-supported Steam Deck feature. Whether an APK works depends on the app and the installed Android environment. In particular, an APK built only for ARM may not run on the Deck’s x86_64 environment. The SteamOS installer maintainer documents ARM translation components for its standard Android 13 images, but that does not ensure a particular app or game will launch, authenticate, display correctly, or accept controls.

Does Waydroid work on Steam Deck?
A third-party SteamOS Waydroid installer documents a setup for Steam Deck, but its compatibility is conditional and version-sensitive. The installer checks SteamOS release and build details and requires a matching verified bundle. Stable, Beta, and Preview branches are supported only when a compatible bundle is available; the maintainer describes development and main-branch builds as experimental. These are project-maintainer claims, not Valve support commitments.
What the documented setup requires
- Enter SteamOS Desktop Mode and use Konsole.
- Have sudo access and an internet connection.
- Use a compatible verified bundle for the installed SteamOS userspace.
- For a new Android installation, have at least 10 GB free on the home filesystem.
The installer documentation lists Android 13 images with or without Google Play and Android TV variants. It also describes Android 16 test images as experimental. Its compatibility statements and tested build combinations apply to the versions named by the maintainer; they do not establish support for future SteamOS or Waydroid releases.

Installing and maintaining the workaround
- Switch to Desktop Mode on Steam Deck.
- Open Konsole and follow the installer instructions in the project documentation.
- Let the installer check your SteamOS build and identify a matching verified bundle. Do not treat an unsupported build as compatible if no matching bundle is offered.
- After an atomic SteamOS update, rerun the installer as its maintainer recommends. If the updated system fingerprint has no compatible bundle, the documented repair process stops instead of applying a mismatched one.
If the Android installation contains data, logins, or settings you need, keep backups of its image and user-state data. The project’s documentation does not make the process a Valve-supported feature.
Will Android games run through Proton?
No. Proton is Valve’s compatibility layer for Windows games and applications on Linux-based SteamOS. Waydroid is a separate route for Android applications. Adding an APK to Steam or forcing Proton compatibility does not turn the APK into a Windows program.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Valve’s Lepton support available on Steam Deck?
Valve’s Steamworks documentation says, “Android games can be run via Lepton,” in its section about Steam Frame. Steam Frame is an Arm64 device, and the same documentation separately discusses Proton for Windows games and FEX for x86 games. That platform-specific statement does not establish Lepton support on Steam Deck.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
