It would require a new, negotiated license joining Capcom’s Street Fighter rights with the Mortal Kombat rights managed through Warner Bros., NetherRealm and the relevant film partners. No official announcement cited here confirms that a crossover film is in development. The announced projects remain separate: Capcom and Legendary’s live-action Street Fighter film is in production for a listed October 16, 2026 theatrical release, while Warner Bros. and NetherRealm continue their own Mortal Kombat film and game ecosystem.
What is officially announced?
The public record describes two independent production chains rather than a shared movie universe. Capcom and Legendary announced a live-action Street Fighter film and television project on April 5, 2023, with Capcom saying it would jointly produce the projects with Legendary. On September 5, 2025, Capcom announced that filming had started, that Capcom and Legendary were jointly financing the film, and that the listed release date was October 16, 2026. That announcement named Ken, Ryu and Chun-Li among the principal characters and cast. Paramount’s official film page markets the project for theatrical release.

On the Mortal Kombat side, Warner Bros. Games identifies Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition as a current release developed by NetherRealm Studios and links promotional skins to the Mortal Kombat II film. Warner Bros. describes NetherRealm as a Warner Bros. studio. None of those announcements says that Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Scorpion or any other character will cross into the other franchise’s film.

Who would have to approve a crossover?
A crossover is legally possible because copyright and trademark owners can authorize their characters in a new work. The practical issue is not whether the law permits a meeting; it is whether every party with control over the characters, film production and downstream exploitation agrees to the same deal.

Street Fighter approvals
Capcom would need to approve the use of its characters, names, logos, designs, story elements and game-derived trademarks. The current film arrangement also makes Legendary an important production partner. Paramount’s announced theatrical role would have to be addressed if the crossover used the same film distribution pathway, although a different distributor could theoretically be negotiated in a new contract.
Mortal Kombat approvals
The other side would need authorization from the entities controlling the Mortal Kombat characters and the proposed film. Warner Bros. identifies NetherRealm as a Warner Bros. studio, so a deal would have to account for both the game-originating character rights and the film-side approvals. If a proposal used the existing Mortal Kombat movie continuity, the relevant film production and distribution partners would also need to sign off. New Line could become part of that approval chain for a film proposal, but no crossover agreement has been announced.
The contract would cover more than a screenplay
A one-page permission to put two characters in a scene would not be enough for a commercial feature. Negotiators would normally define:

The cited announcements do not disclose private contract clauses. Those items are the business and legal subjects a new agreement would have to settle, not terms already confirmed for a crossover.
Does a shared corporate or distribution relationship make it automatic?
No. Corporate affiliation or a distribution relationship does not itself create a character license. Capcom would still have to approve Street Fighter material, and the Mortal Kombat rights holders would still have to approve their characters and the proposed film use. A studio could make an offer, coordinate financing or distribute a finished movie, but those actions do not transfer another company’s copyrights or trademarks.

That distinction matters because the current announcements show separate chains: Capcom and Legendary are financing and producing the 2026 Street Fighter film, while Warner Bros. and NetherRealm operate the Mortal Kombat game and film ecosystem. A relationship between distributors could reduce logistical friction after a deal is signed, but it cannot replace the deal.
Could Ryu and Scorpion fit the same story?
They can, but the filmmakers would need a clear creative contract between the two series. Street Fighter is being positioned around recognizable arcade fighters, martial-arts action and a broad theatrical audience. Mortal Kombat is identified with graphic violence, supernatural conflict and fatalities. A film that simply combines the most extreme elements could produce an incoherent rating and tone.

Violence and rating
The rating would be a development decision, not an announced fact. A tournament story emphasizing strikes, rivalries and implied consequences could target a less restrictive rating than a version showing graphic fatalities. Conversely, removing the signature brutality that audiences expect from Mortal Kombat could make the crossover feel inauthentic. The contract would need to permit both owners to approve the final violence level, marketing language and cut delivered to each territory.
Canon policy
Writers would have to state whether the film is:
- A standalone event outside both franchises’ main continuities.
- An official chapter in one franchise’s timeline that imports selected characters from the other.
- An explicitly non-canon crossover whose rules do not alter either series.
A standalone or non-canon approach can protect existing storylines, but it still requires consistent rules for character histories, deaths, alternate versions and sequels.
Powers and signature moves
The creative team would need a shared rulebook for fireballs, supernatural abilities, weapons, transformations and fatalities. It should specify what counts as a finishing move, who can survive it, whether game mechanics are literal in the film and how fights avoid making one franchise’s heroes look like guest characters in their own story.

Reason for the meeting
A tournament, dimensional crisis, criminal conspiracy or supernatural threat could bring the casts together, but the premise must explain why characters with different world rules share one location. The story also needs a reason for rivals to cooperate instead of fighting until the final act. These are development questions; no official crossover plot exists.

How a real crossover would be structured
If the owners chose to pursue the idea, the process would likely move through several approval gates. The sequence below describes what a serious proposal would need to resolve, not an announced production schedule.
- Define the rights package. List every character, emblem, costume, move, setting and piece of backstory requested from each franchise. Decide whether the package covers only one film or also sequels, television and games.
- Choose the continuity. Put the standalone, canon and non-canon options in writing before a screenplay is commissioned. This prevents later disputes over whether a crossover event changes either series.
- Set the tone and rating target. Establish the permitted violence, supernatural imagery, language and audience target. Include a process for resolving disagreements over edits and regional versions.
- Assign production control. Determine who hires the director and writers, approves casting, supervises effects and controls the final cut. Capcom, Legendary, Warner Bros., NetherRealm and the film distributor would need clearly separated responsibilities.
- Negotiate financing and distribution. Decide which studio pays, which company releases the film, how theatrical and home-entertainment windows work, and who owns sequel or television options.
- Clear performer and marketing rights. Actor likenesses, voice performances, posters, trailers, interviews, game footage and promotional skins require permissions that are separate from the underlying character copyrights.
- Coordinate consumer products. Toys, figures, apparel, collectibles and game content need brand guidelines, approval calendars and revenue terms before public marketing begins.
- Publish only after all parties announce it. Until the owners issue a joint announcement, reports of a crossover remain speculation rather than confirmation.
What the franchises’ scale suggests
Both brands are large enough to justify serious negotiations, but their published sales figures use different scopes and dates. They should not be added together as a combined audience number.
| Franchise figure | Reported amount | Scope and date |
|---|---|---|
| Street Fighter | Over 49 million units | Capcom cumulative series shipments as of December 31, 2022 |
| Mortal Kombat | Over 100 million units worldwide | Warner Bros. Games franchise-wide figure, reported in 2025 |
| Mortal Kombat | More than 76 million videogame units | Warner Bros. corporate profile figure; current profile scope |
The two Mortal Kombat numbers are not interchangeable: one is a Warner Bros. Games franchise-wide statement from 2025, while the other is a Warner Bros. corporate profile figure specifically described as videogame units. The difference in scope and date is why they should remain separate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Would merchandise and games be part of the deal?
Almost certainly, if the project were intended as a full commercial universe rather than a one-off film. Hasbro announced a licensing partnership with Legendary for Street Fighter action figures, toys and collectibles timed to the 2026 film. That establishes an active film-tie-in merchandise program for Street Fighter, but it does not include Mortal Kombat characters or indicate a crossover line.

A joint project would need a new product plan covering figure likenesses, packaging, logos, retailers, territories and approval rights. The same applies to downloadable game content or a crossover game: a film license would not automatically authorize a playable character, and a game license would not automatically authorize a movie appearance.
Could the movie be released by a different studio?
Potentially, but changing distributors would add another negotiation rather than remove one. The current Street Fighter film is marketed for theatrical release by Paramount, while a crossover could be financed or distributed under a different arrangement if all rights holders agreed. The contract would need to decide who controls release dates, territories, marketing spend, home-entertainment windows and any platform exclusivity.
A distributor can provide access to theaters and marketing infrastructure, yet it cannot grant Capcom’s characters or Warner Bros.’ characters without permission from their owners. Distribution cooperation is therefore helpful only after the underlying rights package is secured.
Has a Street Fighter–Mortal Kombat crossover been announced?
No. The official materials summarized above announce a separate Street Fighter film and television project, the start of filming and its listed October 16, 2026 release date, plus continuing Mortal Kombat game and film activity. They do not announce a crossover movie, shared-universe plan, casting, script, director, financing agreement or release date for one.
That leaves the idea legally and commercially possible but presently unconfirmed. A credible announcement would normally identify the participating rights holders, production partners, format and distribution arrangement; until then, treat any proposed matchup as fan speculation.
What should readers watch for next?
- A joint statement from Capcom and the companies handling the Mortal Kombat film rights.
- Specific language naming a crossover, rather than general comments about expanding game adaptations.
- Confirmation of which continuity, rating target and characters are licensed.
- Details about financing, distributor, sequel options and television or game extensions.
- Merchandise announcements that explicitly identify both franchises instead of a single-franchise tie-in.
Until those signals appear, the accurate answer is straightforward: the characters can share a screen if their owners negotiate a new agreement, but no such movie has been officially announced.
