Can the Anbernic RG35XX H Play Classic Halo? How It Compares With Other Handhelds

The RG35XX H can run Halo: Combat Evolved via a community native ARM64 port—not stock Xbox emulation. Here are the tested firmware, setup steps, Xbox data requirements, reported performance, and alternatives.

Yes, but not through the RG35XX H’s normal emulator menu. A community project provides an unofficial native ARM64 port of the original Xbox version of Halo: Combat Evolved for Allwinner H700 handhelds, and the RG35XX H is listed as tested. You need compatible Linux-based community firmware, the port package, and legally obtained Xbox-version game data. The project reports roughly 40–55 frames per second in campaign at its default render scale and 60 fps in menus; those figures come from the maintainer, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee for every level, release, or firmware build.

What “playing Halo” means on the RG35XX H

The RG35XX H is not emulating an original Xbox with one of its standard cores. ANBERNIC’s supported-system list covers platforms such as PSP, PlayStation, Dreamcast, Nintendo DS, arcade, and older 8- and 16-bit systems, but it does not list the original Xbox. The Halo route is a separate community project: native AArch64 code built from a decompilation of the Xbox game and compiled for the handheld’s H700/Mali-G31 platform. The port uses the firmware’s SDL2 libraries and Mali-G31 OpenGL ES driver rather than an Xbox emulator.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The project identifies Xbox build 01.01.14.2342 as its base and documents the RG35XX H as tested. That distinction matters. Installing an ordinary emulator, copying PC Halo files, or using the stock firmware alone will not create this compatibility. You are installing a specialized port under a supported community firmware and supplying the original Xbox data it expects.

The project documentation is maintained at the Halo: Combat Evolved RG35XX project page. Release notes and device status can change, so consult the current instructions immediately before installing.

RG35XX H hardware relevant to Halo

ANBERNIC lists the following specifications on its RG35XX H technical specification page:

Component Manufacturer-listed specification What it means for this port
System-on-chip Allwinner H700 The target platform for the native ARM64 build.
CPU Quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 at 1.5 GHz Provides the ARM64 processing environment used by the port.
GPU Mali-G31 MP2 The project uses the firmware’s Mali-G31 OpenGL ES driver.
Memory 1 GB RAM Shared handheld memory; the port’s documented target is configured around this hardware.
Display 3.5-inch, 640×480 A 4:3 screen that suits the original game’s presentation.
Storage 64 GB TF/MicroSD configuration; dual-card slots with expansion up to 512 GB You need room for the supplied image during extraction plus extracted maps and cache.
Wireless Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2 Useful for general handheld functions, but the documented Halo route is a local native port rather than a cloud-streaming requirement.
Battery 3,300 mAh; manufacturer claims up to eight hours The eight-hour figure is a manufacturer claim, not a Halo-specific measurement.

The 3.5-inch 640×480 panel and compact controls make the H attractive for short campaign sessions, while the 1 GB of RAM and H700 chip explain why compatibility depends on a targeted port rather than broad Xbox emulation. Nothing in the specifications establishes support for every Xbox title.

Which firmware and devices are actually supported?

Support is device- and release-specific. The project’s matrix lists the RG35XX H as tested. It lists Knulli Gladiator II as tested firmware, and documents a PortMaster package tested on muOS 2601 Jacaranda beginning with version v2026.10.07. The documentation warns that earlier muOS releases had problems.

Device or firmware Status in the project documentation How to interpret it
RG35XX H Tested The clearest hardware match for the documented instructions.
Knulli Gladiator II Tested firmware Use the project’s Knulli package and the partition instructions for that release.
muOS 2601 Jacaranda PortMaster package tested from v2026.10.07 Earlier releases are specifically associated with problems; check current release notes.
RG35XX Plus, RG35XX SP, RG35XX 2024, RG40XX H/V Expected to work but untested Shared H700 hardware makes them plausible targets, but “expected” is not a confirmed test result.

Do not transfer the RG35XX H result to every H700 handheld. A different shell can have another display driver, control mapping, thermal profile, partition layout, or firmware build. If a device is marked untested, treat installation as experimental and keep a recoverable backup of its card.

How to install Halo: Combat Evolved

The exact folder names and package files can change, so use the current README rather than an old video or mirror. The process documented by the project follows this sequence:

  1. Choose a supported firmware path. Install a compatible Knulli build or a muOS release covered by the project’s current PortMaster notes. On muOS, the documented tested combination starts at 2601 Jacaranda with package version v2026.10.07; do not assume an older release behaves the same way.
  2. Back up the card before changing partitions. Copy your ROMs, saves, BIOS files, and configuration to another drive. The project’s Knulli and PortMaster packages belong on the SD-card partition specified in its instructions; placing files on the wrong partition can make them invisible to the launcher.
  3. Install the project package. Download the current Knulli or PortMaster package from the project documentation and install it using that firmware’s normal package method. The port is not part of ANBERNIC’s factory emulator list.
  4. Prepare Xbox-version game data. Use your own original Xbox copy of Halo: Combat Evolved and create either an ISO/XISO or the extracted Xbox maps in the format the README specifies. The project explicitly says PC-version files do not work. It also states that its releases contain no game files, disc images, or maps.
  5. Place the image in the documented port folder. Copy the Xbox ISO/XISO to the exact folder named in the current README. Do not guess a path from another firmware, and do not rename files unless the instructions require it.
  6. Leave about 3 GB free. The project reports that extracted maps and cache require approximately 3 GB of free card space. Keep the original image on the card during extraction; deleting it early can interrupt setup or leave the port without its source data.
  7. Launch from the Ports section. Start Halo through the handheld’s Ports entry. The first launch extracts maps, which the project says takes about four minutes on its documented setup, then performs initial game setup in roughly another minute. These are maintainer-reported times, not a universal promise.
  8. Let setup finish once. Avoid powering off during extraction or cache creation. After the first successful setup, later launches should use the generated data instead of repeating the full process unless you remove the cache or change installations.

Never download a game image supplied by a random mirror. The project does not distribute copyrighted game data, and the legal right to make or use a personal dump depends on your jurisdiction and circumstances.

Performance: what the published figures do and do not show

The maintainer reports menus at 60 fps and campaign gameplay around 40–55 fps at the default render scale. The documentation identifies campaign areas used for its checks, but it does not establish a frame-rate guarantee for every level, effect, firmware build, temperature, or background process. Treat those numbers as project-reported observations while the port remains under active development.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Menus: approximately 60 fps according to the project.
  • Campaign: approximately 40–55 fps at the default render scale according to the project.
  • Measurement status: no independent laboratory or third-party benchmark is established for these figures.
  • Future behavior: updates can improve rendering or introduce regressions, so compare your package version with the current release notes.

The 640×480 screen is a native fit for the handheld, but the port’s render-scale setting still affects workload. If you alter that setting, you are no longer reproducing the documented default-scale result. A higher scale may look sharper while reducing headroom; a lower scale may improve consistency at the cost of image detail. The available evidence does not quantify either trade-off, so regard them as configuration choices rather than promised performance gains.

RG35XX H versus other ways to play classic Halo

There are three materially different paths: the tested RG35XX H native port, other H700 retro handhelds that are plausible but mostly untested, and supported Windows gaming handhelds that use the Xbox app, installed games, or streaming features. They should not be presented as interchangeable.

Option What you get Main trade-off Evidence boundary
RG35XX H with the native port Compact retro handheld with a documented native Xbox Halo CE route, 4:3 640×480 display, and tested H700 hardware. Community firmware and port installation are required, along with your own Xbox game data; the project is unofficial and still developing. 40–55 fps campaign and 60 fps menus are maintainer-reported, not independent benchmarks.
Other H700 retro handhelds Similar H700-based designs may be able to use the same code. Firmware, controls, display drivers, and installation details vary. Several models are marked expected but untested; no confirmed Halo result should be inferred from the chip alone.
Supported Windows gaming handheld A broader PC environment with Xbox app features, Game Pass access where offered, and select owned-game streaming. Higher device cost and more conventional PC setup; availability, account requirements, region, and current catalog affect access. Xbox’s handheld overview describes supported handheld features and highlights ROG Xbox Ally models, but it does not certify Halo compatibility for every model or region.

A Windows handheld is the more flexible choice if you need modern PC games, desktop tools, or official Xbox ecosystem features. The RG35XX H is the more focused choice if you want a small retro device and are comfortable maintaining community firmware and a native port. Neither category automatically includes a legal copy of the original Xbox game.

What you must own and what the licenses mean

The native port requires Xbox-version assets. The project says an Xbox ISO/XISO or extracted Xbox maps are acceptable inputs and that PC-version files will not work. It also says the port itself and its releases contain no game files. That means installation instructions cannot substitute for your own lawful game data.

The project notes that decompilation and personal use can have different legal treatment by jurisdiction and that its documentation is not legal advice. Check the law where you live before dumping, converting, or using game data. Do not conflate this project with Halo: The Master Chief Collection: Microsoft’s MCC End User License Agreement governs that separate collection and states that the collection may only be used or played with a valid Xbox Live account. It does not turn MCC files into valid input for this original-Xbox port.

Decision guide: is the RG35XX H the right Halo handheld?

Choose the RG35XX H route when

  • You specifically want a compact 4:3 retro handheld rather than a general-purpose PC.
  • You own or can lawfully obtain the original Xbox version’s data.
  • You are comfortable installing Knulli or muOS, using PortMaster, and troubleshooting community software.
  • You accept maintainer-reported performance instead of a guaranteed console-equivalent result.
  • You value local play and do not want streaming to be part of the requirement.

Choose a Windows handheld route when

  • You want an officially supported Xbox app environment, broader PC compatibility, or access to current Game Pass and streaming features where available.
  • You prefer a larger screen, more controls, and desktop-style troubleshooting over a lightweight retro interface.
  • You need a device that can serve modern PC games as well as classic Halo.

Wait or choose another H700 device when

  • You are considering an RG35XX Plus, SP, 2024, or RG40XX H/V solely because it uses the H700. The project marks these as expected but untested, so confirmation is still missing.
  • You cannot spare roughly 3 GB for extraction and cache in addition to the source image.
  • You need a turnkey setup with manufacturer support and no firmware replacement.

Troubleshooting and recovery checks

The port does not appear in the launcher

Confirm that the package was installed on the partition and firmware named by the current instructions. A package copied to a general ROM folder may not be indexed as a Port. Recheck the release’s installation method before changing files.

Setup rejects the game files

Verify that the source is the Xbox build, not a PC installation. The project specifically requires Xbox-version maps or an Xbox ISO/XISO. Keep the filename and folder structure exactly as documented.

Extraction stops or repeats

Check free space first: the project reports about 3 GB for extracted maps and cache and says to retain the image during extraction. Restore the original image if it was removed, then rerun setup without interrupting power.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Performance is worse than the published range

Record the firmware and port versions, restore the default render scale, close background tasks, and compare your combination with the current project notes. The 40–55 fps campaign figure is not an independent guarantee and may not apply to every scene or update.

A different H700 handheld fails

That result does not disprove the RG35XX H documentation. The project labels several other H700 models as untested, and differences in firmware, drivers, controls, or thermal behavior can matter even when the processor is the same.

Bottom line

The Anbernic RG35XX H can play the original Xbox version of Halo: Combat Evolved through a documented unofficial native ARM64 port, making it an unusually capable compact retro handheld. It is not stock Xbox emulation: you must install supported community firmware, add the project package, provide Xbox-version game data, and reserve about 3 GB for extraction and cache. The RG35XX H is the strongest-supported H700 choice because it is explicitly tested, while several similar devices remain untested. If you want a small local Halo machine and accept hands-on setup, it is a credible option; if you want official ecosystem support and broad modern-game flexibility, compare it with a supported Windows handheld instead.
