Yes. The 2026 ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X20 (model RC74XA) is a Windows 11 Home gaming PC in handheld form. It can install and run compatible PC Game Pass titles locally, and it can install the Windows versions of games from Steam and the Epic Games Store. Xbox cloud gaming is an additional streaming option, not a requirement. Compatibility still depends on each game’s Windows version, hardware requirements, launcher, anti-cheat system, subscription plan and region.
What the ROG Xbox Ally X20 actually is
The X20 is not a closed Xbox console. Its Windows 11 Home operating system gives it the same basic software model as a Windows gaming laptop: you can install launchers, sign in to separate accounts and manage games from different PC storefronts. ASUS describes the device as bringing Xbox and major PC storefronts into one library, while the Xbox interface provides a controller-friendly way to browse installed games.

That distinction answers the most important compatibility question. A title with a Windows PC build can generally be treated like a PC game, subject to its requirements. A title that exists only as an Xbox console release cannot simply be installed because the handheld carries an Xbox-branded interface. You need a supported PC version, a compatible cloud-streaming route or another official way to play it.

| Component | X20 specification | Why it matters for games |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 8 cores/16 threads, up to 5.0 GHz | Provides the CPU and integrated-graphics platform used by Windows games; actual frame rates depend on the title and selected settings. |
| Memory | 24GB LPDDR5X | Gives Windows and games substantial memory headroom, although it does not guarantee that every demanding game will run well. |
| Storage | 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD | Holds Windows, launchers and locally installed games. Large modern titles can consume storage quickly. |
| Display | 7.4-inch, 1080p, 120Hz OLED | Supports a sharp handheld image and high-refresh output when a game can produce enough frames. |
| Battery | 80Wh | Provides the power reserve for portable play; runtime varies with game load, brightness, refresh rate and power mode. |
| Expansion and connectivity | USB4, USB-C and microSD Express reader | Supports accessories, external displays or storage expansion, subject to the specifications of the connected device. |
These specifications establish the platform, not a universal performance promise. Every game still has its own minimum and recommended requirements, graphics settings, shader compilation behavior and controller support.

Can it run Xbox Game Pass games without streaming?
Yes, when the Game Pass title has a compatible Windows PC version. The X20 can run the Windows Xbox app, so PC Game Pass games can be downloaded to the internal SSD and played locally. Local play uses the handheld’s processor, graphics capability, memory and storage; it does not require a continuous internet connection after installation and any required first-run checks are complete.
How local PC Game Pass works
- Connect the X20 to the internet and complete Windows setup.
- Open the Xbox app from the Windows Start menu. Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the subscription.
- Choose a game marked as available for PC, check its listed requirements and select the install option.
- Choose the internal SSD or another supported storage location, then wait for the download and installation to finish.
- Launch the game from the Xbox app or the X20’s full-screen gaming interface. Adjust resolution, quality preset, frame-rate limit and power mode for the experience you want.
The United States X20 specification lists two months of Xbox Game Pass Premium as a promotional offer. Eligibility and included offers vary by market, so do not assume that the same trial or subscription duration applies in another country. The Game Pass catalog also changes by plan, region, device and time.
What “Game Pass” does not guarantee
- A console-only Xbox game is not automatically a local Windows installation. Look for a PC version in the Xbox or Microsoft Store listing.
- Cloud availability does not prove that a game can be downloaded. Streaming and local installation are separate delivery methods.
- A game can leave the catalog, be restricted in a region or require a higher subscription tier.
- Some games require extra launchers, account linking, persistent online access or anti-cheat components.
Can you install and play Steam games?
Yes. Steam is a Windows PC storefront, and the X20 runs Windows 11 Home. Install the standard Windows Steam client, sign in to your Steam account and download games just as you would on another Windows PC.
- Open a web browser on the X20 and obtain the Windows Steam installer from Steam’s official download page.
- Run the installer, sign in and allow Steam to update.
- Open your Library, select a game and review its Windows system requirements, controller notes and storage size.
- Choose Install, select the SSD or an approved expansion drive and wait for the download.
- Start the game through Steam. If the title opens a separate publisher launcher, complete that launcher’s sign-in and update process.
Steam compatibility is therefore broad but not unlimited. The game must have a Windows build and function with the X20’s drivers, controls and hardware. A title that relies on unusual peripherals, unsupported anti-cheat software or a desktop-only interface may require additional setup or may not be a good handheld fit.

Can you install and play Epic Games Store games?
Yes. The Epic Games Store also provides a Windows launcher. Install it, sign in to your Epic account and download games from your library or the store.
- Download the Windows Epic Games Store launcher from Epic’s official website.
- Install the launcher and sign in, including any required two-factor authentication.
- Open Library, select a game and check that its listed operating system, storage requirement and online services match your setup.
- Select Install and choose available storage.
- Launch the game from Epic. Keep the Epic launcher installed when the game requires it for authentication, updates or cloud-save handling.
Epic games can also depend on a publisher launcher or a separate anti-cheat service. Those requirements come from the individual game, not from the X20’s Xbox interface. The same principle applies to other Windows PC launchers, including Battle.net: the handheld can run the launcher, but each game remains responsible for its own compatibility.
How the Xbox interface handles multiple storefronts
The X20’s Xbox-focused interface can aggregate games from Xbox/Game Pass and leading PC storefronts so that you do not have to navigate the Windows desktop for every launch. Aggregation is a library and convenience feature; it does not merge licenses or accounts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Steam games remain licensed to your Steam account and continue to use Steam for updates and cloud features.
- Epic games remain tied to your Epic account and may require the Epic launcher.
- Game Pass installations remain subject to Microsoft licensing, subscription and catalog rules.
- Updates, downloadable content, mods and publisher account links continue to follow each store’s policies.
If a game does not appear in the full-screen library, launch its original storefront once, allow it to finish updating and check that the launcher is installed in a standard Windows location. Library aggregation cannot add a game that has not been installed or recognized.

Local play versus Xbox cloud gaming
Local play downloads the Windows game to the X20 and runs it on the handheld. Cloud gaming sends a video stream from a remote server while your controls travel over the internet. Cloud play can provide access to supported console games that do not have a Windows PC build, but it is not the same as installing those games.
| Question | Local installation | Cloud streaming |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the game run? | On the X20’s CPU, graphics hardware and memory | On a remote service; the X20 displays the stream |
| Internet requirement during play | Usually not continuous after installation, although some games require online checks | Required, with connection quality affecting image quality and responsiveness |
| Storage use | Consumes SSD or expansion storage | Does not install the full game locally |
| Game selection | Compatible Windows PC titles and available PC Game Pass games | Titles supported by the cloud service, subscription and region |
| Performance limits | Controlled by the X20’s hardware and game settings | Controlled mainly by the remote service and network latency |
Cloud gaming requires a qualifying Game Pass subscription and a supported device. The catalog and cloud terms vary by plan, region, device and time, so check the current listing for your account before relying on streaming as your only way to play.
Will Xbox saves and progress carry over?
Cross-device synchronization is title-specific. Games that support Xbox Play Anywhere are designed to carry supported saves, achievements and ownership between eligible Xbox consoles and Windows devices. Xbox has described a catalog of more than 1,000 Play Anywhere games, but that figure does not make every Xbox title a Play Anywhere title.

A Steam or Epic purchase is a separate license and normally uses that store’s own save system. Some publishers offer their own cross-progression accounts, while others keep progress platform-specific. Check the individual game’s support documentation before deleting an older installation or assuming that a save will transfer.

Practical checks before installing a game
- Confirm the platform: look for a Windows PC version, not only an Xbox console listing.
- Check storage: compare the game’s download and installed sizes with free SSD space; leave room for updates.
- Check controls: verify native gamepad support if you do not plan to use a keyboard, mouse or dock.
- Check online services: competitive games may require anti-cheat software, account linking or a persistent connection.
- Check the launcher: a Game Pass, Steam or Epic shortcut may still open another publisher client.
- Choose settings deliberately: start at 1080p with a sensible quality preset, then adjust resolution, frame-rate limits and power mode to balance smoothness, image quality and battery life.
Common problems and fixes
A game is listed for Xbox but has no Install button
Confirm that the listing includes PC access. If it is console-only, local installation is unavailable; use a supported cloud route instead if the title is offered there.
Steam or Epic opens, but the game will not launch
Update Windows and the launcher, verify the game files, complete any publisher-account sign-in and review the game’s anti-cheat requirements. A title may be technically installable yet unsupported because of a required service or peripheral.
The game runs but feels slow
Lower the quality preset or resolution, cap the frame rate and close unnecessary background applications. The 24GB memory and Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme provide a strong baseline, but they cannot override a game’s own workload or poor optimization.

Cloud play stutters
Check the wireless connection, reduce competing network traffic and test again near the access point. Streaming quality depends on network latency and stability, not only on the X20’s local hardware.

A save is missing
Verify that you used the same Microsoft, Steam, Epic or publisher account as before. Then check whether the specific game supports Xbox Play Anywhere, platform cloud saves or publisher cross-progression. Cross-save is not universal.
Bottom line for buyers
The ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X20 covers the three storefronts in the question because it is a Windows 11 Home PC handheld. You can download compatible PC Game Pass titles, install Steam and play its Windows catalog, and install Epic Games Store games through the Epic launcher. The Xbox interface makes those libraries easier to reach, but it does not turn every console-only Xbox title into a native PC game or combine the stores’ licenses.
Choose local installation when the game has a Windows build and you want the X20’s own hardware to run it. Choose cloud gaming when a supported subscription and reliable network provide access to a title that is not available for local PC installation. Before buying or downloading, verify the game’s platform, requirements, launcher, account rules and save-sync support.
