Yes, but usually as a 1080p-class output rather than native 1080p at maximum settings. The Legion Go S can drive a 1080p image in demanding PC games when you lower the preset and use AMD FSR or frame generation. Native 1080p or the panel’s full 1920×1200 resolution at Ultra is generally unrealistic for the Windows model with the Ryzen Z2 Go. The Ryzen Z1 Extreme version running SteamOS has considerably more performance headroom in the published tests.
For the Z2 Go, start with a 720p-to-900p internal render, a medium or handheld preset, and FSR Balanced or a similar upscaler. The game can then output 1920×1080 to the Legion Go S display while rendering fewer pixels internally.

What “1080p gaming” means on the Legion Go S
The Legion Go S uses an 8-inch 1920×1200, 120Hz display. That is a 16:10 panel, while 1080p is 1920×1080, a 16:9 image. A game set to 1920×1080 can therefore leave small horizontal bars or be scaled to fit the screen, depending on the game and Windows display settings. Setting the game to 1920×1200 is a larger workload than 1080p because it renders 11% more pixels.

- TAKE FULL CONTROL – Get ready to dominate with the ergonomic Legion TrueStrike Controllers, designed for all-day comfort and precision. With their anti-slip texture, you’ll stay in control during even the most intense battles.
- 1080p output: the handheld sends a 1920×1080 image to the display.
- Native 1080p rendering: the game engine actually calculates every pixel at 1920×1080 before presentation.
- 1080p-class presentation: the game renders internally at 720p, 800p or 900p, then reconstructs a 1080p image with FSR or another scaler.
The third approach is the practical one for demanding releases. Upscaling can look sharp on an eight-inch screen, but it cannot create the same fine detail as native rendering. Fast movement, foliage, hair and thin wires are the areas most likely to show reconstruction artifacts.
Which Legion Go S configuration are you using?
Performance depends more on the APU and operating system than on the Legion Go S name. Lenovo offers the handheld with either AMD Ryzen Z2 Go or Ryzen Z1 Extreme processors, up to 32GB of LPDDR5X memory and up to 1TB of PCIe Gen4 storage. Lenovo’s CES 2025 specification lists LPDDR5X-7500 memory, a 55.5Wh battery and an approximate 730g weight. The Z2 Go is a 4-core/8-thread chip with a 3.0GHz base clock and 4.3GHz maximum frequency according to Lenovo’s 2025 PSREF.
The cited testing compares a Windows Z2 Go model with a Z1 Extreme model running SteamOS. That is not a pure processor comparison: SteamOS has different background overhead, drivers and game compatibility, and the Z1 Extreme itself is the faster APU. Treat the results as configuration guidance, not a universal frame-rate guarantee for every Legion Go S.
| Comparison point | Windows model with Ryzen Z2 Go | SteamOS model with Ryzen Z1 Extreme |
|---|---|---|
| CPU configuration | 4 cores / 8 threads; 3.0GHz base, up to 4.3GHz | Ryzen Z1 Extreme; exact clocks were not stated in the cited tests |
| Memory | Legion Go S configurations are listed with up to 32GB LPDDR5X-7500 | |
| Operating-system overhead | Windows background services and driver overhead can consume some resources | SteamOS has a gaming-focused environment; the cited results include both OS and APU differences |
| Practical internal render target | 720p–900p is the useful range for demanding games | More headroom; 800p with FSR reached substantially higher frame rates in the cited Doom test |
| Upscaling in cited results | FSR Balanced produced a playable 1080p output in Doom: The Dark Ages | FSR raised Doom performance at both 1200p and 800p |
| Frame generation | Doom rose from about 15fps to about 27fps at 1200p Medium when frame generation was enabled | Frame-generation results were not stated in the cited SteamOS test |
| Best use case | 1080p-class output with reduced settings, especially when plugged in | Higher settings or steadier frame rates, subject to SteamOS game compatibility |
Lenovo described the product at CES 2025 this way: “These innovations are designed with competitive gamers and gaming students in mind, providing the performance, adaptability, and versatility needed to excel both in the game and in academic fields like STEM.” In demanding AAA games, that adaptability means choosing the internal resolution and power mode rather than expecting Ultra settings at the panel’s maximum resolution.
What the published benchmarks show

| Game and settings | Resolution | Average result |
|---|---|---|
| Cyberpunk 2077, Ultra | 1200p | 3fps |
| Cyberpunk 2077, Ultra | 720p | 6fps |
| Black Myth: Wukong, Medium | 1200p | 19fps |
| Black Myth: Wukong, Medium | 720p | 39fps |
| Doom: The Dark Ages, handheld preset with FSR Balanced | 1080p | 37fps |
| Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Highest | 720p | 32fps |
| Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Highest | 1200p | 21fps |
| Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Highest | 720p | 30fps |
| Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Highest | 1200p | 16fps |
These numbers establish the main rule: reducing resolution can turn a sub-20fps result into something near or above 30fps, but an Ultra preset can remain too heavy even after dropping to 720p. Cyberpunk 2077’s 3fps at Ultra 1200p and 6fps at Ultra 720p is a settings problem, not evidence that the hardware can never run the game. The preset needs to be reduced, and upscaling should be enabled.
Doom: The Dark Ages separates the two configurations
Tom’s Guide reported about 25fps at 1200p Medium without FSR on the Z1 Extreme SteamOS configuration. Enabling FSR raised that result to about 35fps, while 800p with FSR reached roughly 56–61fps. The Windows Z2 Go configuration produced about 15fps at 1200p Medium; frame generation increased the displayed result to about 27fps.
Recommended Free Tools
Frame generation can make camera movement look smoother, but it does not make the game engine simulate more responsive input. If the underlying frame rate is 15fps, controls still feel closer to 15fps even when the counter shows 27fps. Use it after achieving a stable base rate, not as a substitute for lowering an overloaded preset.
Recommended 1080p settings for the Z2 Go
Use this order when configuring a demanding game on the Windows Z2 Go model. The names vary slightly between games, but the priorities are consistent.
- Plug in the handheld and select its higher performance mode. The 55.5Wh battery cannot sustain maximum performance as efficiently as wall power, and unplugged play may require a lower wattage or frame-rate target.
- Set the output to 1920×1080. If the game only offers 1920×1200, choose a 16:9 resolution or enable the game’s aspect-ratio scaling so the image is not stretched.
- Choose the medium, handheld or console-equivalent preset. Start there instead of selecting High or Ultra and trying to repair the frame rate with resolution alone.
- Set the internal resolution or render scale to about 720p–900p. 720p is the safest starting point for a heavy release; 900p can preserve more detail in a well-optimized game.
- Enable FSR. FSR Balanced is the demonstrated starting point for 1080p output in Doom: The Dark Ages. Use Quality if performance allows, and Performance only when the game remains below the desired frame rate.
- Disable expensive effects first. Ray tracing, volumetric fog, screen-space reflections, crowd density and hair or foliage quality can consume large amounts of GPU time. Lower those before cutting texture quality, provided the available memory is sufficient.
- Cap the frame rate. A stable 30fps or 40fps usually feels better than an uncapped rate that swings between the 20s and 40s. The 120Hz panel can display these targets cleanly, but it cannot create missing frames.
- Add frame generation only after the base rate is stable. Check for doubled edges, ghosting and input delay. Turn it off if controls feel delayed or artifacts are distracting.
After each change, replay the same demanding scene for several minutes. A menu benchmark can look smooth while traversal, combat or a crowded city produces stutter. Watch frame-time consistency, not only the highest number in the counter.

How the demanding games in the tests should be approached
Cyberpunk 2077
Do not use Ultra at 1200p or 720p on the Z2 Go: the cited results were 3fps and 6fps respectively. Begin with a medium or handheld-style preset, disable ray tracing, render internally around 720p–900p, and use FSR. A 30fps target is more realistic than native 1080p Ultra.
Black Myth: Wukong
The tested result improved from 19fps at 1200p Medium to 39fps at 720p Medium. That is a strong case for 720p internal rendering with an upscaled 1080p output. If you raise the internal resolution, reduce shadows, effects and volumetrics first.
Doom: The Dark Ages
This is the clearest example of a successful 1080p-class setup. The handheld preset with FSR Balanced reached 37fps at 1080p in the reported test. On the Z1 Extreme SteamOS model, 800p with FSR reached approximately 56–61fps; on the Z2 Go, frame generation increased the 1200p Medium result from about 15fps to about 27fps.
Assassin’s Creed Mirage
The Highest preset produced 32fps at 720p but only 21fps at 1200p. Use 720p or 900p internally, lower crowd and environment settings if available, and reserve 1200p for lighter scenes or a 30fps cap.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider
Highest settings delivered 30fps at 720p and 16fps at 1200p. A 1080p output is possible with an internal 720p render and upscaling, but native 1200p at the same preset is not a practical target on the Z2 Go.

Plugged-in versus battery operation
Run demanding games from USB-C power whenever possible. Wall power lets the handheld maintain a higher performance profile for longer and avoids rapid battery drain. On battery, choose a 30fps cap, 720p–800p internal rendering and a lower power mode; otherwise clocks may fluctuate and cause uneven frame times.
The 55.5Wh battery and approximately 730g chassis make the Go S portable, but battery life depends on game load, screen brightness, refresh rate, speakers and the selected performance mode. A result measured while plugged in should not be presented as an expected battery result.
Common problems and fixes
The game reports 1080p but looks blurry
Check the internal-resolution slider. Many games keep a 720p or lower render while the output menu says 1920×1080. Switch FSR from Performance to Balanced or Quality if the frame rate allows, and verify that dynamic resolution is not reducing the image below your chosen floor.
The frame counter is high but controls feel slow
Frame generation may be adding displayed frames to a low base rate. Disable it, lower the internal resolution or effects, and establish a steady 30fps or higher before trying frame generation again.

SteamOS gives a different result from Windows
That difference is expected. The Z1 Extreme SteamOS test uses a faster APU and a different software stack than the Windows Z2 Go test. Drivers, shader compilation, Proton compatibility and game patches can all change the result. Compare like-for-like settings and the same power source before drawing conclusions.
Should you choose the Z1 Extreme model?
Choose the Z1 Extreme configuration if demanding AAA games are the reason you are buying the handheld and you want more room for 900p or 1200p rendering, higher presets or frame rates above 30fps. The cited Doom results show the benefit: approximately 35fps at 1200p with FSR and 56–61fps at 800p with FSR, compared with about 15fps at 1200p Medium on the Windows Z2 Go before frame generation.
The Z2 Go remains suitable if you accept 720p–900p internal rendering, medium or handheld presets and a 30fps target. It can produce a convincing 1080p-class image, especially in games with good FSR implementation, but it is not a native-1080p Ultra machine. Check the exact operating system, APU, memory capacity and included charger in a listing before purchasing; “Legion Go S” alone does not identify the performance level.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Bottom line
The Legion Go S can run demanding PC games at 1080p output, but the reliable method is reduced internal resolution plus upscaling. The Windows Ryzen Z2 Go model should generally render at 720p–900p, use medium or handheld settings, and target a stable 30fps. Native 1080p or 1200p at Ultra can fall far below playable rates. The Ryzen Z1 Extreme SteamOS configuration has substantially more headroom, yet its results still depend on the game, drivers, patches, power mode and whether the handheld is plugged in.
