Can the PS5 Play PS1, PS3, and PS4 Discs? Backward Compatibility Explained

Short answer: A PlayStation 5 cannot play original PlayStation (PS1) or PlayStation 3 discs. A PS5 with a built-in disc drive can play supported PlayStation 4 discs, while the original PS5 Digital Edition cannot read any physical game disc. For a physical PS4 library, the disc-drive model is the relevant choice; for PS1 and PS3 discs, you need the original console, a supported re-release, or another platform.

PS5 disc compatibility at a glance

Backward compatibility depends on three separate questions: which PlayStation generation produced the disc, whether your PS5 has optical hardware, and whether that particular game is supported. A disc that fits physically is not automatically a disc the PS5 can run.

Disc generation PS5 disc support What you need
PS1 No The original console, a supported re-release, or another platform
PS3 No The original PS3, a supported re-release, or another platform
PS4 Yes, for supported titles A PS5 model with a disc drive; the disc remains inserted while you play

Sony’s own safety documentation states that PlayStation-format, PlayStation 2-format, and PlayStation 3-format software cannot be played from a disc. PlayStation Support separately describes the PS5 as backward compatible with the overwhelming majority of PS4 games.

Can a PS5 play PS1 discs?

No. An original PS1 game disc is not playable directly in a PS5. The PS5 does not provide a disc-based PS1 compatibility mode, so inserting a black PlayStation CD will not install or launch the game.

To play a PS1 title on modern hardware, look for an officially supported re-release or a version supplied through another platform. Availability is title-specific and can vary by region. Owning the original PS1 disc does not by itself create a PS5 digital entitlement.

Why the PS1 disc cannot be used

PS1 games use a different software format and licensing path from the PS4 software that Sony supports on PS5. The PS5’s disc drive is not a universal retro-game reader: its ability to read the physical medium does not mean the console has the emulator, operating-system support, or license check required to run that generation.

Can a PS5 play PS3 discs?

No. PS3 discs are not supported on PS5. PlayStation Support explicitly lists PS3 discs as a backward-compatibility limitation, and Sony’s PS5 safety guide says PlayStation 3-format software cannot be played from a disc.

“PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation®3 discs.” — PlayStation Support, Sony Interactive Entertainment

A disc-drive PS5 therefore does not turn a PS3 collection into a playable library. Use the original PS3, a supported re-release, or another platform that legitimately provides that game. A PS3 disc also cannot be treated as proof of ownership for a PS5 download unless the publisher has separately created such an entitlement.

Why PS3 support is different from PS4 support

PS3 software was designed for a substantially different hardware and software environment. PS5 backward compatibility was built around PS4 software, not a general-purpose system for launching every earlier PlayStation disc. Consequently, the presence of a drive solves only the physical-media requirement; it does not add PS3 emulation or a PS3 license system.

Can a PS5 play PS4 discs?

Yes, provided you use a PS5 model with a disc drive and the specific PS4 game is supported. The console normally copies or installs the game data to its internal storage and may download an update. The disc is still required as the ownership check: leave it inserted whenever you start the game.

“Supported” does not mean every feature behaves identically to a PS4. Sony warns that some PS4 functions may be unavailable and that some games can show errors or unexpected behavior on PS5. Check the individual title’s current support information when a feature, save, peripheral, or online service matters to you.

How to use a PS4 disc on a disc-drive PS5

  1. Turn on the PS5 and sign in to the account you use for your games.
  2. Insert the PS4 game disc with the label facing in the correct direction for your console’s horizontal or vertical position.
  3. Select the game tile or game hub that appears on the home screen.
  4. Allow the PS5 to install the required game data. If an update is offered, let it download and install before launching.
  5. Start the game from the PS5 home screen after installation completes.
  6. Keep the original PS4 disc inserted for every play session. Removing it prevents the installed game from passing its disc-ownership check.

Installation does not convert the physical copy into a disc-free license. If you lend, sell, or remove the disc, the installed data can remain on storage, but the PS5 will not let you play that copy without the disc.

Does the PS5 Digital Edition have a disc drive?

The original PS5 Digital Edition has no built-in disc drive and cannot use PS4, PS3, or PS1 discs. Its games must be digital purchases or digital entitlements. If you already own physical PS4 games, buying the original Digital Edition means buying those games again digitally if you want to play them on that console.

Sony documents an optional CFI-ZDD1-series disc drive for specified newer Digital Edition model groups. The documented compatibility applies to particular CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 groups; it is not a universal upgrade for every PS5 Digital Edition. Check the exact CFI model number printed on your console and the drive’s packaging or official compatibility list before buying. Do not assume that a similarly named revision accepts the accessory.

Choosing between the two PS5 hardware approaches

  • Built-in disc-drive PS5: the straightforward choice for a physical PS4 collection, because the drive is already installed and the disc remains the play check.
  • Original PS5 Digital Edition: suitable only if your library is digital or you do not need physical discs; it cannot be expanded with a disc drive.
  • Eligible newer Digital Edition: may accept the CFI-ZDD1-series drive, but model-group eligibility must be confirmed before purchase and installation.

How many PS4 games work on PS5?

Sony stated on October 9, 2020 that “more than 99 percent of the 4000+ games available on PS4 will be playable on PS5.” Hideaki Nishino, then CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Platform Business Group, gave that figure as a launch-era statement. It is useful evidence of broad coverage, not a guarantee that every PS4 title, mode, accessory, save feature, or regional release works identically today.

The practical meaning is that compatibility is the rule for PS4 software, while exceptions exist. A game can launch but still have a missing PS4 function, a display or performance issue, an online service that has ended, or behavior that differs from the original console. The PS5 may also require a title update before the best-supported version is available.

Three checks to make before relying on a PS4 disc

  • Title support: verify that the specific game is among the supported PS4 software rather than assuming every release is included.
  • Feature support: check whether multiplayer, legacy peripherals, downloadable content, saved data, or other PS4 functions are retained.
  • Edition and region: confirm that your disc edition and account region match the available update or re-release, particularly for games with multiple editions.

What backward compatibility does—and does not—promise

Backward compatibility means the PS5 can run supported PS4 software. It does not promise a remaster, a free upgrade, a higher frame rate, or identical menus and peripherals. Some publishers provide PS5 versions or upgrades separately; others leave the PS4 version as the playable edition. Those are title-by-title decisions, not automatic consequences of inserting a disc.

The PS5 can install a PS4 game from its disc and apply available updates, but the disc remains the license check. Digital ownership works differently: a digital PS4 purchase associated with the same account can be downloadable without a disc, subject to the title’s availability and licensing. A physical PS1 or PS3 disc does not become a digital PS5 license merely because you own it.

Troubleshooting a PS4 disc that will not play

The PS5 does not recognize the disc

  • Confirm that the console is a disc-drive model and that the disc is a PS4 game, not a PS1 or PS3 release.
  • Remove fingerprints, dust, or visible damage with a soft, clean cloth, then reinsert the disc in the correct orientation.
  • Restart the PS5 and check whether the game tile appears after the system has completed startup.
  • Test another known-good PS4 disc. If several discs fail, the issue may involve the drive rather than one title.

The game installs but will not start

  • Leave the original disc inserted; an installed copy still needs the disc for verification.
  • Finish any pending game or system update and allow installation to complete.
  • Check the title’s support notes for a compatibility exception, unavailable feature, or known error.
  • If the disc is from a different edition or region, verify that the installed software and account can use that release.

A feature behaves differently

Some PS4 functions may be unavailable on PS5, and Sony warns that some games can show errors or unexpected behavior. Compare the game’s current support information with the feature you need instead of assuming that a successful launch guarantees full parity. Online play can also depend on the publisher’s servers and policies, which are separate from disc compatibility.

Which PS5 should a physical PS4 owner buy?

Choose a PS5 with a disc drive if your games are on PS4 discs. It lets you install supported titles while retaining the disc as the play check. The original Digital Edition is the wrong fit for a physical library because it has no disc support. For a newer Digital Edition that appears to support the CFI-ZDD1-series drive, verify the exact CFI-2000 or CFI-7000 model group and the accessory’s current compatibility information before treating it as an upgrade path.

If your collection is mostly PS1 or PS3 discs, neither PS5 hardware solves the central problem. Keep the appropriate original console available, or locate a supported re-release for each game you want to play. The generation printed on the disc matters more than the fact that the disc is physically the same size as a newer game disc.
