No. A standard R36S running the Linux-based ArkOS firmware has no documented Nintendo 3DS emulator or 3DS system entry. Its Rockchip RK3326 processor, 1 GB of RAM and 640×480 single-screen display are aimed at older consoles and selected native Linux ports. Replacing the microSD card, adding a BIOS file or installing a PortMaster package cannot create a missing 3DS emulator.
The direct answer: stock R36S does not run Nintendo 3DS games
The R36S is sold as a small Linux gaming handheld, not as a Nintendo 3DS emulator. The ArkOS emulator and ports inventory documents the systems, ROM directories and emulator cores available on the device; Nintendo 3DS does not appear in that inventory. That is the decisive software limitation.

The hardware reinforces the conclusion. Dov Grobgeld’s R36S programming README describes an Ubuntu Linux-based ArkOS handheld with a Rockchip RK3326 quad-core ARM Cortex-A35 processor, 1 GB of RAM and a 3.5-inch 640×480 LCD. Those specifications can support a useful range of older systems, but they do not supply a 3DS emulator automatically. Emulation requires both an appropriate program and hardware capable of running it at an acceptable speed.
As of October 18, 2026, the available ArkOS documentation and R36S product guidance establish no first-party 3DS support. There is also no published independent frame-rate study or compatibility percentage that would justify saying that a particular 3DS title works.

What the R36S hardware and firmware actually provide
| Part | Documented specification | What it means for 3DS expectations |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | Rockchip RK3326, quad-core ARM Cortex-A35 | It is the platform used by ArkOS for older-console emulation and Linux software; a 3DS core is not documented for it. |
| Memory | 1 GB RAM | Adding software cannot increase the device’s physical RAM or guarantee that a demanding emulator will run. |
| Display | 3.5-inch, 640×480 LCD | The R36S has one small screen, while 3DS games are designed around a two-screen layout. |
| Operating system | Ubuntu Linux-based ArkOS | Only the emulator cores and ports integrated or documented for ArkOS are available in the normal setup. |
| Storage | microSD | A larger or replacement card provides more space for supported software; it does not add a 3DS emulator. |
The screen issue is separate from raw processing power. A 3DS title expects two displays and game interfaces built around a touch-sensitive lower screen. A single 640×480 panel could theoretically show rearranged output in a custom program, but no documented R36S/ArkOS feature provides that 3DS presentation or control mapping. Do not treat the display as proof that every dual-screen Nintendo system is supported: Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS are different platforms.
Why a missing ArkOS core matters
ArkOS organizes emulation around system-specific cores and configuration. A ROM file is only data; a compatible emulator must interpret the console’s CPU, graphics, audio, input and operating-system behavior. If the operating system’s documented inventory has no Nintendo 3DS core or system entry, copying a file into a ROM folder does not change that fact.
This is why a 3DS-looking filename may appear to do nothing, fail to launch, return to the menu or produce an error. The menu can display a folder or an unrecognized file without possessing the code needed to execute the game. Renaming the file, changing its extension or adding artwork cannot supply the missing emulator.

Does a BIOS file add 3DS support?
No. A BIOS is firmware data used by some emulators; it is not an emulator itself. Even where a system requires BIOS files, the correct core must already be present and compatible with the device. The documented R36S setup does not establish a Nintendo 3DS core, so obtaining a purported “3DS BIOS for R36S” cannot turn ArkOS into a 3DS platform.

Will a replacement microSD card help?
Only with storage and, potentially, reliability. The R36S uses microSD storage, so a replacement can hold more legally obtained games, ports or configuration files for systems the firmware supports. It does not add processor capability, RAM, a second screen or an undocumented emulator. A card advertised as “3DS-ready” should therefore be treated skeptically unless it includes verifiable, device-specific documentation from a credible maintainer.
PortMaster is not Nintendo 3DS emulation
PortMaster distributes native Linux ports and game engines compiled for supported handhelds. A port is a version of a game or engine adapted to run directly on Linux; it does not reproduce Nintendo 3DS hardware. ArkOS documentation separates ports from emulator cores, and its documented port list does not establish a Nintendo 3DS port.
This distinction explains several common misleading demonstrations:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- A Linux game with a similar title is not the original 3DS release.
- A launcher entry or artwork can make an unsupported file look integrated without making it executable.
- A native port may run well while a completely different console emulator remains unavailable.
- Installing PortMaster expands the selection of compatible Linux software, not the list of emulated Nintendo systems.
If a video claims that copying a “3DS ROM,” BIOS or launcher to an R36S enables 3DS play, look for a named emulator core, version information, device-specific instructions and reproducible evidence. The available first-party documentation does not establish such support.

Can you install Citra or Lime3DS on an R36S?
There is no documented ArkOS installation path that adds Nintendo 3DS support by installing Citra, Lime3DS or another standalone 3DS emulator. Installing an application is not the same as making it usable: the program would need a compatible ARM Linux build, graphics support, input and display handling, and enough performance for the particular game. None of those requirements is established for the standard R36S configuration in the available documentation.
Even if an enthusiast-produced binary launches, that would not establish general compatibility. A single menu screen, a homebrew test or an unusually light scene is not evidence that commercial 3DS games run correctly. You would need documented builds, reproducible settings and game-specific testing to make a compatibility claim; no independent performance statistics or percentage are published for this device.
For the same reason, downloading a different ArkOS image, changing emulator settings or moving files between system folders should not be presented as a reliable 3DS solution. Those actions can repair or replace a firmware installation, but they cannot create hardware resources or a maintained emulator core that the inventory does not contain.
What systems does the R36S handle?
R36S product documentation describes results for several older systems as dependent on the individual game and settings. That wording matters: it is not a promise that every title in a system’s library will be smooth.

| System or category | Documented position | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo 64 | Results depend on the game and settings | Expect title-by-title variation rather than universal performance. |
| PlayStation Portable | Results depend on the game and settings | Some games may be more demanding than others; no percentage is provided. |
| Nintendo DS | Results depend on the game and settings | DS support does not mean Nintendo 3DS support; the systems use different hardware and software. |
| Dreamcast | Results depend on the game and settings | Use the documented qualification rather than assuming every game is playable. |
| PlayStation 2 | Documented as unsupported | The device’s menu or storage capacity cannot change that stated limitation. |
| Nintendo 3DS | No documented emulator core or system entry | There is no supported stock-ArkOS path established for 3DS games. |
The Nintendo DS line is the most common source of confusion. DS and 3DS share a two-screen concept and some naming, but they are separate generations. A handheld that can launch selected DS software is not automatically capable of launching 3DS software.
How to check an R36S claim before changing your setup
If you encounter a “3DS on R36S” guide, use this checklist before replacing firmware or risking your files:
- Identify the exact hardware. Confirm that the device is an R36S with the RK3326 platform, rather than a different handheld using a similar case or name.
- Check the ArkOS inventory. Look for a named Nintendo 3DS system entry and an emulator core, not merely a folder, theme item or PortMaster shortcut.
- Require a reproducible build. A credible guide should identify the emulator version, ARM architecture, operating-system image and configuration files.
- Separate a demonstration from compatibility. Ask whether the video shows a commercial game, how controls and both screens are handled, and whether the result is sustained gameplay rather than a boot screen.
- Back up your card first. Firmware experiments can corrupt saves and settings even when they do not improve emulation.
- Do not pay for a promise. A larger card, preloaded image or “3DS BIOS” cannot be treated as an upgrade unless the seller provides verifiable technical documentation.
Legal limits for 3DS ROMs and other game files
The R36S seller’s published guidance states: “As for game ROMs, the legal stance is that you’re responsible for ensuring you own the original copies of any games you play.” In practical terms, use game files obtained through lawful means and do not download or distribute unauthorized copies.

That statement is general guidance, not a complete answer for every country. Copyright exceptions, personal-copy rules, circumvention laws and the legality of downloading a file you own differ by jurisdiction. Ownership of a cartridge or disc does not automatically make every online source lawful, and a file’s availability on a website is not proof that distribution is authorized. For a country-specific answer, consult current local law or qualified legal advice.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
These legal limits apply independently of technical support. A game may be legally dumped yet still unusable on an R36S because ArkOS lacks the required emulator. Conversely, a technically supported system does not make an unauthorized ROM lawful.
If you specifically need Nintendo 3DS games
Choose a device and software stack that explicitly document Nintendo 3DS emulation rather than trying to force the R36S beyond its supported role. Compare alternatives using the following criteria:
- Processor and GPU capability: confirm that the manufacturer or emulator project names your target architecture and graphics backend.
- RAM: check the installed memory against the emulator’s documented requirements; more storage is not a substitute for RAM.
- Operating-system availability: look for a maintained 3DS emulator build for the exact operating system and processor.
- Dual-screen handling: verify how the two screens are arranged, whether touch input is available and how the layout can be changed.
- Controls: check analog input, shoulder buttons, touch controls and remapping options for the games you intend to play.
- Thermals and battery: sustained emulation can produce more heat and shorter battery life than older 2D systems; seek device-specific measurements rather than assumptions.
- Firmware support: favor projects that publish updates, installation instructions and recovery steps for the exact model.
- Game-source compliance: plan to use game files you are legally entitled to use, regardless of which handheld you select.
Do not use an alternative device’s specifications as evidence that the R36S can match it. Emulation capability depends on the complete combination of hardware, drivers, operating system, emulator version and game configuration.

Bottom line
The standard R36S running ArkOS has no documented Nintendo 3DS emulator, and its RK3326 processor, 1 GB of RAM and single 640×480 screen do not change that software fact. PortMaster ports are native Linux applications, not 3DS hardware emulation. A replacement microSD card, BIOS file, launcher or custom menu cannot add a missing core. The R36S remains useful for the older systems and selected ports documented for it, with N64, PSP, DS and Dreamcast results varying by game and settings and PS2 listed as unsupported. For 3DS, use a platform with explicit emulator support and keep all game files within the laws that apply where you live.
