Can the ROG Xbox Ally X and MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ Replace a Gaming Laptop?

Yes, but only for the right kind of laptop owner. The ROG Xbox Ally X and MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ are Windows 11 gaming PCs in handheld bodies. Either can become your only gaming computer for portable play, game streaming and occasional Windows work. Neither is a complete substitute for a gaming laptop if you need sustained high-wattage performance, a large built-in screen, a full keyboard, many ports, easy upgrades or consistently high settings in demanding AAA games.

The ROG Xbox Ally X is the more balanced choice: it costs less than the MSI in the comparison testing, has an 80Wh battery and an Xbox-focused interface. The MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ is the performance option, delivering a 20–40% gaming uplift in PC Gamer’s testing and adding an 8-inch 120Hz display, but its US review price was $1,799. Both become more laptop-like only after you add a dock, monitor, keyboard, mouse and charger.

What “replacing a gaming laptop” really means

A handheld PC replaces a laptop most convincingly when your priorities are playing from a sofa, bed or hotel room, accessing Xbox and PC libraries, and carrying one compact computer. Windows 11 lets both devices install desktop launchers, browsers, office applications and utilities, so they are not limited to a console-style catalog.

The compromise appears when the workload lasts for hours or demands a large interface. A laptop includes a screen, keyboard, touchpad, battery, cooling system and ports in one chassis. A handheld gives you an integrated display and controls, but desk use normally requires a USB-C or Thunderbolt dock, external monitor, keyboard, mouse and charger. That accessory stack adds cost, cables and setup time, and it removes much of the handheld’s simplicity.

The ASUS specification lists an 80Wh battery and an Xbox full-screen experience for the ROG Xbox Ally X. MSI lists the Claw 8 EX AI+ with an 8-inch 1920×1200 120Hz VRR panel, Hall-effect controls and two Thunderbolt 4 ports. Storage expansion and internal SSD details depend on the exact configuration, so confirm those before buying rather than assuming every regional SKU is identical.

Gaming performance: which one is faster?

The MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ is the faster gaming handheld in the available comparative testing. PC Gamer measured a 20–40% gaming performance advantage over the ROG Xbox Ally X20 in its tested games. The same review noted that the MSI cost just under 40% more in the United States, making the extra frame rate a premium purchase rather than a free upgrade.

Benchmark results

3DMark test MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ ROG Xbox Ally X
Fire Strike 12,358 9,141
Time Spy 6,534 4,033
Port Royal 3,544 1,999

Tom’s Guide recorded those 3DMark scores in its reviews. TechRadar reported the same MSI-versus-Ally-X results, with the Claw ahead in GPU-focused tests while the Ally X was slightly ahead in Geekbench CPU scores. That split matters for laptop replacement: the MSI’s advantage is primarily graphics throughput, while everyday CPU-heavy work is much closer.

What the frame rates mean in demanding games

In PC Gamer’s Cyberpunk 2077 test at 1080p medium, the ROG Xbox Ally X20 averaged 42 frames per second. The MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ averaged 35 FPS in its endurance mode and 51 FPS after switching to its v1.0 performance configuration. The review described roughly 40 FPS without upscaling as borderline for Cyberpunk, so the MSI’s best result is useful only when the higher-power mode, heat and fan noise are acceptable.

Black Myth: Wukong is a tougher case. PC Gamer found that it needs upscaling or frame generation on this class of handheld. In practice, both devices are designed around sensible compromises: 1080p-class output, reduced quality presets and technologies such as AMD or Intel upscaling rather than native, maximum-quality rendering.

MSI says its recommended settings and XeSS can improve frame rates, and Tom’s Guide reported XeSS 3 support for about 50 games at the time of its review. Support varies by game, so treat upscaling as a title-by-title setting rather than a universal performance guarantee.

Battery life and plugged-in play

Both handhelds use an 80Wh battery, but equal capacity does not establish equal runtime. ASUS reports up to 9.9 hours of light gaming and 2.7 hours of heavy AAA gaming for the ROG Xbox Ally X. Those figures come from ASUS’s stated conditions: 75% brightness, wireless enabled, online play, 1080p low settings in Silent mode for light gaming, and Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p low for heavy gaming.

ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X Gaming Handheld, 7” FHD 120Hz, AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24 GB LPDDR5, 1TB SSD, Win 11, Long Battery Life 22.3 Hours, Portable Weight, Black (Japan Version)
  • 🖥️ High-Performance 7" Gaming & Productivity Display | 1920x1080 Glare TFT LCD with 120Hz refresh rate delivers ultra-smooth visuals for gaming & streaming; 10-point capacitive multi-touch panel + precision pointing device ensures intuitive control. Powered by Windows 11 Home 64-bit, this black handheld balances portability (11.4"x4.8"x1.1", 1.6 lbs) and immersive play.
  • ⚡ Top-Tier AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme Processor | 8-core/16-thread chip paired with integrated AMD Radeon Graphics, 24GB LPDDR5X-8000 onboard memory & 1TB PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe SSD for lightning-fast load times, seamless multitasking & crisp gaming graphics. Max power consumption of 65W optimizes performance without excessive energy drain.
  • 🔋 Long-Lasting Battery & Flexible Power Options | 4-cell 80Wh lithium polymer battery offers up to 13.9hrs of video playback or 22.3hrs of idle use—ideal for all-day gaming marathons or remote work.
  • 🎮 Professional Gaming Controls & Smart Features | Full layout with left/right sticks, D-pad, A/B/X/Y buttons, bumpers/triggers, 2 macro buttons & dedicated Xbox/display/library keys for customized gameplay. Built-in accelerometer/gyroscope for motion control; Windows Hello fingerprint recognition ensures secure, one-touch login.
  • 🔌 Versatile Connectivity & Complete Accessories Kit | Wi-Fi 6E + Bluetooth 5.4 for lag-free online gaming & device pairing; 2 Type-C ports (USB 4 + USB 3.2 Gen2) support data transfer, video output & PD charging.

MSI’s official page does not provide a directly comparable independent battery-runtime figure. You should therefore avoid treating the two 80Wh batteries as proof that both last the same amount of time. Performance mode, screen brightness, frame-rate limits, wireless activity and the game itself can change endurance substantially.

For long AAA sessions, plan to play near a charger. High-power modes can improve frame rates but increase heat, fan noise and energy use. A laptop still has an advantage for sustained workloads because its larger chassis can devote more volume to cooling and can run from a higher continuous power budget.

Screen, controls and handheld ergonomics

The MSI’s 8-inch 1920×1200 panel is its clearest display advantage on paper. Its 120Hz refresh rate and variable refresh rate can make uneven frame delivery look smoother, while the stated 500-nit typical brightness is useful in brighter rooms. The larger panel also gives Windows menus and strategy-game text more room than a typical compact handheld screen.

The ROG Xbox Ally X display specifications are configuration-specific in the available material, so verify the exact resolution, refresh rate and brightness of the RC73XA listing you intend to purchase. Do not assume that a model name alone guarantees the same panel as another regional bundle.

MSI’s Hall-effect controls are designed to avoid the conventional potentiometer wear associated with many analog-stick assemblies. That is a durability feature, not a promise that every unit will feel identical. Both systems remain handhelds: their built-in controls are excellent for controller-friendly games, but they are less comfortable than a keyboard and mouse for management games, competitive shooters and extended text entry.

Windows, Xbox access and light productivity

Windows 11 gives both devices broad software compatibility. You can install PC launchers, use a browser, connect Bluetooth accessories and run light productivity applications. The ROG Xbox Ally X emphasizes an Xbox full-screen experience, while MSI provides an Xbox Mode interface. Those shells are intended to make a Windows handheld easier to navigate from the controls, but the underlying desktop is still Windows.

That distinction matters when an update, launcher prompt or driver utility appears. A handheld can replace a laptop for email, document edits, file transfers and streaming, but it is not as efficient for all-day typing or multitasking without external input devices. For frequent productivity, budget for a keyboard and mouse rather than relying on the touch screen and thumbsticks.

Docking and the true desk setup

To use either handheld like a desktop gaming computer, you generally need:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A compatible USB-C or Thunderbolt dock with the video outputs and USB ports you require.
  • An external monitor, because a handheld screen is too small for comfortable desk work for many users.
  • A keyboard and mouse for Windows navigation and productivity.
  • A charger capable of supplying the handheld’s required power while the dock and peripherals are connected.

The MSI has dual Thunderbolt 4 ports, giving it a clearly specified high-bandwidth connection option for docks and external displays. The Ally X can also be used with a compatible USB-C dock, but verify the dock’s power delivery, display support and port layout for your exact unit. Once the monitor and peripherals are included, compare the complete setup cost with a laptop rather than comparing handheld prices alone.

Storage and upgrade considerations

Storage expansion deserves its own check because microSD and internal-SSD support can vary by model and configuration. Confirm the exact slot, supported capacity and whether replacing the internal drive affects warranty or recovery options before ordering. A handheld with limited built-in storage can fill quickly when modern AAA games occupy dozens of gigabytes.

A gaming laptop generally offers more accessible upgrade paths, especially for storage and sometimes memory. Neither handheld should be purchased on the assumption that every major component can be upgraded later. Treat the installed storage and memory configuration as a long-term decision.

Price and value

Tom’s Guide reviewed the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ at $1,799 and called it the best PC gaming handheld the reviewer had used, while also saying the price was difficult to justify without a sale. PC Gamer’s comparison found it just under 40% more expensive in the United States than the tested ROG Xbox Ally X20. No single current retail price for the Ally X was published, and handheld pricing changes with sales and regional availability, so check the live listing before deciding.

The MSI premium buys higher GPU performance, a larger high-refresh display and dual Thunderbolt 4 connectivity. The Ally X’s value comes from lower entry cost in the comparison, its 80Wh battery and a more direct Xbox-oriented experience. A sale can change the recommendation; compare final prices, included chargers and storage capacities rather than relying on launch positioning.

Which handheld fits your use?

Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X when:

  • You want portable Xbox and PC gaming at the lower price of the two options.
  • You value the Xbox full-screen experience and an 80Wh battery.
  • You are comfortable using 1080p-class settings, upscaling and occasional performance compromises in AAA games.
  • You need one compact gaming PC but only occasional light Windows work.

Choose the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ when:

  • You will pay more for the strongest graphics performance in this comparison.
  • You want an 8-inch 1920×1200 120Hz VRR display.
  • Dual Thunderbolt 4 ports and Hall-effect controls are important to your setup.
  • You are willing to use higher-power modes, manage heat and accept shorter or less predictable unplugged sessions during demanding games.

Choose a gaming laptop instead when:

  • Your primary games are demanding AAA releases at high settings and you expect consistent performance for long sessions.
  • You need a built-in keyboard, touchpad and larger display every day.
  • You regularly connect several peripherals, external drives or multiple displays.
  • You want broad upgrade options or a single self-contained desk-and-travel machine.

How to decide before buying

  1. Define your main location. If most play happens away from a desk, handheld controls and battery capacity carry more weight. If the device will live on a desk, price the dock, monitor, keyboard and mouse first.
  2. List your demanding games. Check whether you are comfortable with upscaling, frame generation or reduced presets. Cyberpunk 2077 and Black Myth: Wukong illustrate why native high settings are not the normal target for these systems.
  3. Set a frame-rate and battery expectation. Decide whether roughly 40–60 FPS at sensible settings is acceptable, and whether you can play near an outlet for heavy AAA sessions.
  4. Verify the exact configuration. Confirm display, storage, memory, ports, charger and regional operating-system details on the retailer’s listing.
  5. Compare the complete cost. Include the dock and desk peripherals if the handheld is meant to replace a laptop rather than supplement one.

Bottom line

The ROG Xbox Ally X and MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ can replace a gaming laptop for portable gaming, streaming and light Windows tasks, but they do not eliminate the laptop’s advantages. The ROG Xbox Ally X is the sensible all-rounder for Xbox-focused players who want lower cost and strong battery capacity. The MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ is the performance pick: its Intel Arc G3 Extreme graphics and 8-inch 120Hz screen are compelling, but the roughly 40% premium in PC Gamer’s US comparison is hard to justify unless you value every extra frame and find a good sale. If your definition of a laptop replacement includes a large integrated workspace, sustained high settings, extensive connectivity and comfortable all-day productivity, keep a gaming laptop in consideration.
