The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are Windows 11 handheld gaming PCs with Xbox integration. You can install compatible Windows games locally, including games from the Xbox PC app and other PC storefronts. An Xbox console purchase runs natively only when the game also has a Windows PC version and the required entitlement, most notably Xbox Play Anywhere. Console-only titles are accessed through Xbox Cloud Gaming or Xbox Remote Play instead.
That distinction explains why one Xbox game may install directly, another may appear in your library but offer only streaming, and a third may require a separate PC purchase. Your account, the game’s edition, storefront, network and compatibility label all matter.

What the Xbox handheld actually is
Microsoft and ASUS announced the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X as Windows 11 handhelds. They are therefore handheld PCs first, with an Xbox-focused interface and services layered on top. Windows access lets you download games from your preferred storefront, run ordinary Windows applications and use services such as Discord and Twitch. Microsoft Corporate Vice President Roanne Sones described the advantage in the Windows Experience Blog on June 9, 2025: “Because these handhelds run Windows, you have access to games you can’t get elsewhere.”

That Windows foundation is the reason PC storefront choice is broad. The Xbox experience can aggregate installed games from the Xbox PC app, Xbox Game Pass, Battle.net and other major PC storefronts, but aggregation does not turn every console license into a Windows license. The game still needs a compatible Windows build and the correct entitlement.

Three ways a game can run

These methods are complementary. A game can support one, two or all three, and the same title may behave differently depending on whether you own it on Xbox, PC or through a subscription.
Can Xbox console purchases work on the ROG Xbox Ally?
Only when the purchase includes a Windows PC entitlement. The clearest route is Xbox Play Anywhere. Eligible games can be played on Xbox console, Windows PC and supported gaming handhelds at no additional cost. Xbox says Play Anywhere carries your saves, add-ons and achievements through the same Xbox account. In January 2026, Xbox reported more than 1,000 Play Anywhere games.
Play Anywhere is an entitlement attached to a specific game, not a blanket benefit for your entire console library. A console-only title does not become a native Windows installation merely because you bought it digitally on Xbox. If its store listing has no PC version or Play Anywhere support, use Cloud Gaming or Remote Play when the game and your setup qualify.
How to check before downloading
- Sign in to the Xbox account that owns the game on the handheld.
- Open the game’s listing in the Xbox PC app and look for a Windows PC install option or Play Anywhere designation.
- If the listing offers only console ownership, check whether the title is available for Xbox Cloud Gaming or plan to use Remote Play from your own console.
- Confirm that you are selecting the same edition and account. A console bundle, expansion or disc license may not provide a separate Windows entitlement.
When Play Anywhere applies, starting the PC version on the handheld can use the same cloud-synchronized progress as the console. The synchronization covers eligible saves, add-ons and achievements; it does not make an unrelated PC storefront purchase interchangeable with an Xbox license.
Can you install Steam and other PC games?
Yes, provided the game has a compatible Windows PC build and the handheld meets its requirements. Windows 11 allows you to install the Xbox PC app alongside other launchers and applications. That includes games obtained from major PC storefronts, not just games sold through Xbox. The Xbox handheld page and Windows Experience Blog both describe downloading from favorite storefronts and running Windows applications.
For a local installation, connect to the internet, install or open the relevant launcher, sign in to the account that owns the PC game, and choose the handheld’s internal storage or an attached storage device when the launcher offers that choice. After installation, launch the game from its own storefront or from the Xbox interface if it has been added to the aggregated library.

A PC license is separate from an Xbox console license unless the publisher and Xbox have tied both versions together through Play Anywhere or another stated cross-entitlement. Buying a game on a PC storefront therefore does not, by itself, grant the Xbox console version, and buying a console-only version does not create a Windows install.

Xbox Cloud Gaming can stream hundreds of Game Pass games and selected games you own to the handheld. The game runs remotely, so the Ally does not need a full local installation. This is useful for large games, limited storage or a console title that has no Windows build.
Cloud access is conditional rather than universal. Xbox identifies several variables:
- The game must be included in the cloud catalog or be one of the supported owned games.
- Your handheld and region must be supported.
- You need an internet connection capable of sustained game streaming; wireless congestion and latency affect responsiveness.
- A subscription may be required for a Game Pass title. Cloud-playable games outside Game Pass may be sold separately.
To use it, sign in to the Xbox service on the handheld, open the cloud-gaming area, select a supported title and start streaming. The first launch is usually faster than downloading a large PC build, but image quality and input response depend on the network path between you and the service. Cloud play is consequently the most convenient option for access, not the most independent one: an outage, regional restriction or catalog change can prevent a game from starting even when you own compatible hardware.
Remote Play: stream from your own Xbox console
Remote Play is different from Cloud Gaming. The game stays installed on your Xbox One or Xbox Series console, and that console renders the game while sending video and audio to the handheld. Your console must have remote features enabled, the device must be supported and connected to the internet, and the Xbox must be turned on or in Sleep mode.
Remote Play is the route for console games that are not Play Anywhere and are not available through Cloud Gaming, as long as they are installed on your console and the title supports the service. It also preserves the console version’s settings and installed content because you are controlling the actual console rather than launching a PC port.

Remote Play checklist
- Enable remote features in the Xbox console’s settings before leaving home.
- Leave the console powered on or configured for Sleep mode.
- Use the same Xbox account on the console and handheld.
- Test the connection on the network where you intend to play; a fast home connection does not guarantee a good experience on a mobile network or public Wi-Fi.
Because Remote Play sends a live video stream from your console, local network quality and distance can matter as much as the handheld’s hardware. It is not an offline mode: if the console is unreachable, the handheld cannot start that console session.

Microsoft’s Handheld Compatibility Program evaluates controller input, iconography, text input, display resolution and legibility. A game marked Handheld Optimized has passed the program’s criteria for a ready-to-use handheld experience. Microsoft Game Dev Editor in Chief Will Tuttle wrote on August 20, 2025: “Games labeled as ‘Handheld Optimized’ are ready to go.”
Mostly Compatible means the game should work but may need minor changes, such as a graphics setting adjustment, a controller remap or a different text-size choice. These labels describe usability, not ownership: a Mostly Compatible console-only title still cannot be installed locally without a Windows version and entitlement.
Microsoft also reports Windows Performance Fit targets:

Microsoft presents these as guidance rather than promises for every game, driver or power mode. Check the individual game’s label and be prepared to change resolution, graphics quality or frame-rate settings when a title is only Mostly Compatible or has a lower Performance Fit target.
How to decide which route to use for a specific game
- Identify the edition you own. Determine whether your license is for Xbox console, Windows PC, a subscription catalog or a PC storefront.
- Look for Play Anywhere or a Windows PC version. If both are present, install the native PC version for the most self-contained experience.
- Check the handheld labels. Handheld Optimized is the simplest starting point; Mostly Compatible signals that you may need settings changes.
- Choose streaming when there is no local build. Check Cloud Gaming first for supported catalog or owned titles, then Remote Play if the game is installed on your Xbox console.
- Match the method to your connection. Native installation is the only option that does not require an active streaming connection. Cloud Gaming and Remote Play both depend on network quality, while Remote Play additionally depends on your own console being reachable.
- Confirm progress behavior. Play Anywhere synchronizes eligible saves, add-ons and achievements. Other PC storefronts and console versions may use different save systems, so do not assume a shared save unless the game’s listing or service states it.
What the handheld cannot do automatically
- It cannot turn every Xbox console purchase into a Windows download.
- It cannot run a console-only game locally without a compatible PC version.
- It cannot guarantee that a game marked compatible will deliver the same frame rate in every driver, graphics setting or power mode.
- It cannot stream Cloud Gaming or Remote Play reliably without suitable internet access.
- It cannot merge licenses from unrelated storefronts simply because their launchers appear in one library view.
The practical answer to “Can it play my Xbox games?” is therefore title-by-title. Play Anywhere games with a Windows build install and synchronize like PC games. Other console titles are still playable through Xbox Cloud Gaming or Remote Play, subject to catalog, region, subscription, console and network requirements. PC games from the Xbox app, Steam and other Windows storefronts can be installed when their PC versions support the handheld.
