Yes, a D&D campaign can have two half-elves have a child who is an elf, but the cited rules do not require that outcome or assign it a probability. The 2014 rules describe half-elves as combining human and elven qualities without specifying what happens when two half-elves have a child. The Dungeon Master or a setting-specific source can settle the child’s ancestry and game traits.
What the 2014 D&D rules say
The 2014 Basic Rules describe half-elves in relation to elf and human parents and give half-elves traits for play. They do not state whether two half-elves’ child must be a half-elf, elf, human, or another ancestry. So an elf child is a possible table ruling, not a result mandated by those rules.
The rules also provide no inheritance percentage. Real-world genetics should not be treated as an official D&D mechanic here.
What “elf child” can mean at the table
It helps to distinguish ancestry, identity, and character mechanics. A child might be considered an elf by ancestry or culture while the campaign handles their playable traits separately. The DM can decide whether the child uses elf traits, half-elf traits from an older source, or another option supported by the campaign.

If a particular campaign setting has its own ancestry lore, use that source first. The question does not name a setting, and no single outcome is established across all D&D worlds.
How the 2024 rules affect the answer
The 2024 Player’s Handbook core species list includes elves and humans but not half-elves. D&D Beyond says species from older books can still be used with the 2024 rules. Wizards describes the 2024 revisions as compatible with fifth edition, but that compatibility does not establish a universal biological rule for children of two half-elves.

- 49PCS SET: Includes 49 polyhedral dice in 7 different color sets. Each 7-piece set contains D4, D6, D8, D10, percentile D10, D12 and D20, giving you plenty of options for characters, campaigns and tabletop play
- CLEAR NUMBERS: High-contrast numbers make each die quick and easy to read during gameplay. Different colors also help players distinguish their sets when sharing dice around the table
- ACRYLIC DICE: Made from lightweight acrylic with smooth polished surfaces and defined edges for a comfortable feel in hand, ideal for repeated rolling during RPG campaigns and game nights
- 7 COLOR SETS: Use different sets for characters, share them with friends or keep extras ready for larger gaming sessions. Seven complete sets offer more flexibility for RPGs, tabletop games and group play
- 7-POCKET BAG: The included drawstring bag features 7 separate compartments to keep each dice set sorted and organized, making all 49 dice easy to store and carry between gaming sessions
In practical terms, if you are building a character with 2024 core rules, agree with the DM on which available species or older-book option best represents the child. The 2024 Player’s Handbook is the core reference for its character-creation rules.
