Can Two Xboxes in the Same House Play Together?

Two Xboxes can play the same eligible digital game at once: make one console the owner’s Home Xbox, use separate profiles, and check the game’s multiplayer requirements.

Yes. Two Xbox consoles in the same home can play together, including the same eligible digital game at the same time. For one digital purchase, set the other player’s console as the purchasing account’s Home Xbox: that player uses their own profile there, while the purchaser signs in on the second, roaming console. The game must support the multiplayer mode you want, and online-play entitlements depend on the game and account setup.

How to play one digital game on two Xboxes

Microsoft’s digital-game rules allow a different user to play on an account’s Home Xbox while the purchasing account plays on a roaming console. The account’s device license applies on its Home Xbox; on the roaming console, the account holder needs to be signed in for access. Microsoft says a digital game can be installed on a reasonable number of consoles, but is generally playable on only one console at a time, subject to this Home-console exception. Microsoft’s digital-goods usage rules describe the arrangement.

  1. Choose the other player’s console as Home. Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the digital game, then open Settings > Personalization > My home Xbox and designate that console. Microsoft’s Xbox GDK sharing documentation says the purchaser can share access to digital content with others who sign in to the Home console.
  2. Have the other player use their own profile. On the Home Xbox, the second player signs in with their separate account and launches the game. The different-user condition is what allows play there while the purchaser uses the other console.
  3. Use the purchasing account on the roaming Xbox. Sign in to the second console with the account that owns the game and launch it there. The account needs to remain signed in for access on that console.
  4. Start the game’s multiplayer mode on both consoles. Follow the title’s own invite, lobby, or joining steps; the license setup grants access but does not create multiplayer functionality.

Microsoft limits an account to five Home Xbox changes during a rolling one-year period, counted from the first assignment or change. That is a limit on changing the designated Home console, not on how many consoles can install a digital game. See the current Home Xbox and digital-goods rules.

Check the game and online-play requirements

Game access and multiplayer access are separate questions. Before setting up a session, confirm that the exact title supports the mode you want, that it runs on both consoles involved, and that its online-play requirements are met. The licensing rules do not establish whether a particular game supports online multiplayer, cross-play between platforms, or local multiplayer.

Microsoft says subscription-enabled content, including multiplayer and social benefits, is shared with other accounts on the Home Xbox. On a different console, those benefits are shared while the subscriber is signed in and connected. Which subscription product currently qualifies, and whether a particular game requires one, should be checked against the game’s requirements and Microsoft’s current subscription terms; the sharing documentation alone does not establish a specific tier.

What this setup does—and does not—share

  • Digital games: The Home Xbox’s device license can let other users on that console access eligible purchased content. The purchaser uses their account on the roaming console.
  • Durable add-ons and subscription-enabled content: Microsoft’s developer documentation describes these as shareable on the Home console. Check the individual title or add-on for its own restrictions.
  • Game progress and account identity: The second player should use their own profile. The licensing arrangement does not make both players the same account or establish how a specific game handles saves, progression, or parental settings.
  • Every multiplayer mode or platform combination: Not guaranteed by game sharing. Verify the title’s supported modes and platform requirements.

If you own two physical copies or the game is not digital

The one-purchase Home Xbox arrangement described above applies to digital licenses. If you are using physical discs, each console needs access to a playable copy under the game’s disc rules; the digital Home-console license does not apply to a disc. For a second digital copy or a title with special restrictions, check that game’s own terms and multiplayer instructions.
