Yes. A vampire can be immune to sunlight in a particular story, because vampire fiction has no single rulebook: daylight may be fatal, weakening, or harmless depending on the work. A vampire who can survive in the sun is not necessarily immune to it; the story may still make daylight uncomfortable or weaken them.
What sunlight can do to a vampire
When a story’s rules are unclear, separate three possibilities rather than assuming that every vampire burns:

- Fatal: Sunlight destroys or kills the vampire.
- Weakening: The vampire can be out during the day but is less powerful, or prefers to sleep.
- Harmless: Sunlight has no harmful effect under the rules of that story.
Also check the scope of the rule: it might apply to all vampires in a setting, one character, or an exceptional subgroup. And note the condition named in the work—ordinary daylight, direct exposure, or sunrise may not be treated as equivalent.
Why sunlight is not fatal in every vampire story
Vampires have long been associated with darkness and nighttime, but that association is not the same as a universal rule that sunlight kills them. In an account for National Geographic, gothic literature scholar Laura Westengard describes older literary vampires as preferring sleep during the day without necessarily burning to death: “They prefer to be sleeping, but they are not going to burn up and die.”

- Louis' first-person confession to a skeptical boy--transformed the vampire from a hideous predator into a highly sympathetic, seductive, and all-too-human figure
- The story is that of Louis, a wealthy eighteenth century Louisiana plantation owner who became a vampire in the depths of his despair over his brother's suicide
The nineteenth-century works discussed there include John Polidori’s The Vampyre (1819), Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla (1872), and Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897). Their vampires could move around in daylight, though they might be weaker. In Stoker’s novel, the Count is not destroyed by the sun. You can read Stoker’s original Dracula in the Project Gutenberg text.
How sunlight became a defining vampire weakness
F. W. Murnau’s 1922 film Nosferatu helped popularize the idea that sunlight destroys vampires. Its ending shows Count Orlok caught by the rising sun and vanishing in fire—a striking image that subsequent stories could adopt or adapt. That cinematic convention does not retroactively make daylight fatal in every earlier story.
The Royal Ontario Museum’s overview of vampire traits likewise emphasizes that portrayals vary: some vampires die in sunlight, while others develop resistance. As Westengard puts it, “there’s no one true version of a vampire.”

Look at what the specific work establishes, rather than applying a rule from another book, film, game, or franchise. If a character walks in daylight but is weakened, they are daylight-capable, not fully immune. If sunlight causes no harm under the setting’s stated conditions, immunity is a fair description. A “daywalker” is one familiar kind of sunlight-resistant vampire, but the label and its limits depend on the story.
