Yes—viewers can skip an ad on a 24/7 YouTube live stream when YouTube makes that particular ad skippable. YouTube says skippable video ads can be skipped after five seconds; non-skippable ads must run before the video can be viewed. A skip option is not guaranteed, and not every viewer is served an ad.
What happens when a viewer skips a live-stream ad?
YouTube’s live-stream guidance says viewers who see an ad return to the live stream when the ad ends or when they choose to skip it. The skip control is available only for ads that YouTube serves in a skippable format. YouTube Help explains that skippable video ads can be skipped after five seconds, while non-skippable ads must be watched before the video can be viewed. YouTube’s live-stream ad guidance and ad-format guidance describe these behaviors.
Does a 24/7 stream have a special ad-skipping rule?
YouTube’s help pages do not describe a separate skip rule for streams that run continuously. The available guidance for live-stream ads therefore applies to a 24/7 stream: duration alone is not identified as changing whether an ad can be skipped. This is an inference from YouTube’s general live-stream guidance, not a stated 24/7-specific policy.
Why viewers may have different ad experiences
- Ad format: Skippable ads have a skip option after five seconds under YouTube’s general format guidance; non-skippable ads do not.
- Whether an ad is served: YouTube does not guarantee that an ad slot will show an ad. A viewer who is not served one continues watching the stream.
- Ad timing: Monetized live streams may have pre-roll ads, which run automatically, and mid-roll opportunities. Creators may configure mid-rolls as automatic, scheduled, or manually inserted, subject to eligibility and YouTube’s decision to serve an ad.
- Other viewers: Viewers can see ads at different times, so one person’s ad or skip option does not establish what another viewer will see.
These controls govern when ad opportunities can occur; they do not guarantee that an ad will appear or that it will be skippable. YouTube recommends automatic mid-rolls and says they can be placed at natural breakpoints, but skip availability depends on the format of the ad served. See YouTube’s guidance on live-stream ads.

Does stream orientation affect live ads?
YouTube’s current comparison lists pre-roll and mid-roll ads for horizontal live streams, but not for vertical live feeds. That distinction concerns whether those live ad placements are available; it does not determine whether a particular ad is skippable. YouTube’s live-stream comparison covers the orientation distinction.
What creators can and cannot control
Creators can configure opportunities for mid-roll ads, but YouTube’s systems decide whether to serve an ad in a given slot. A scheduled or manually inserted opportunity is not a promise that every viewer will receive an ad, and the creator’s setting does not determine whether YouTube offers that viewer a skip button.

YouTube reports that creators who chose live automatic mid-rolls saw an average uplift of over 20% in instream ad revenue per hour, based on a comparison across 207 countries described as covering January 2024. This is YouTube’s reported average comparison, not a guaranteed result for an individual channel—and it says nothing about how often viewers can skip ads. Details appear in YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.
