YouTube Analytics lets you compare subscribers gained from Live and Videos on your own channel, but those figures show what happened—not that streaming continuously caused the difference. To judge which format works better for your channel, compare gains alongside exposure, viewing behavior, discovery sources, and audience overlap over the same period.
What the available evidence says
YouTube’s Analytics reports subscribers gained by content type, including Videos, Shorts, Live, and Posts. YouTube says this can help creators understand which content performs best at turning viewers into subscribers. It is a way to examine your own results, not proof of a platform-wide advantage for livestreaming or for streams that run 24/7. YouTube Help: Understand your YouTube content performance.
YouTube reported that over 30% of daily logged-in viewers watched live content on average in Q2 2025. That figure, published in its September 16, 2025 Live update announcement, describes live viewing overall; it does not measure subscriber conversion or isolate continuous streams. How to compare Live and Videos in your channel
- Set a fair date range. In YouTube Studio, open Analytics and use the Content report to inspect subscribers gained by Live and Videos over the same period. Use periods long enough to include a representative mix of your uploads and streams; avoid comparing a single unusually successful stream with a routine month of uploads.
- Put subscriber gains next to exposure. Compare views and, where available, impressions and click-through rate. A format that gains more subscribers may simply have reached more people. Consider subscribers in relation to views or impressions, rather than relying on raw totals alone. The available reports can help you inspect these measures, but a ratio is still descriptive and does not by itself establish why viewers subscribed.
- Inspect live viewing and discovery. YouTube’s live report includes new subscribers during a stream, watch time, average view duration, peak concurrent viewers, and traffic sources. It can be filtered for Live, On demand, or Live & on demand. Review retention and discovery sources as well as subscriber totals to understand how viewers arrived and whether they stayed. - Check whether the comparison is like for like. A 24/7 gaming stream and a tightly edited gameplay guide may cover different games, serve different viewer needs, or reach different audiences. YouTube provides a viewers-across-formats report; use it to consider overlap between people who watch your Live and Videos content. Differences in topic, audience, distribution, or stream duration can all affect the result.
- Describe the conclusion accurately. You can say that Live gained more subscribers than Videos for your channel during a given period, or that one format had a higher subscriber-to-view ratio in that comparison. You cannot conclude from those totals alone that 24/7 duration caused the difference.
Discovery depends on format and channel
Viewers may find livestreams on a channel’s Live tab; vertical livestreams can also appear in the Shorts feed. Analytics can attribute live traffic to sources such as browse features, YouTube Search, channel pages, and direct or unknown traffic. For a channel focused on games, compare streams and uploads that serve similar interests where possible. For example, a continuous gameplay stream may attract viewers who want ambient or ongoing play, while a concise guide may answer a specific question. If those formats bring in different people, their subscriber totals answer different questions about your audience rather than identifying a universal winner.
What a subscriber comparison can—and cannot—tell you
- It can show: how many subscribers YouTube attributed to Live and Videos in your selected period, alongside available measures of reach, viewing, and traffic.
- It cannot establish on its own: that 24/7 streaming caused higher growth, that continuous streams outperform regular uploads across YouTube, or that a result will hold for another channel or time period.
- It is more useful when: you compare the same time window, examine exposure and viewing context, and account for differences in subjects and audience overlap.
