Yes. Minecraft villagers can breed whether or not they have jobs: a profession is neither required for breeding nor a barrier to it. If no baby appears, check the villagers’ willingness, suitable food, and whether a valid bed is available for the baby.
Do villagers need jobs to breed?
No. A villager’s profession and workstation relate to work, not breeding eligibility. Villagers can breed without a profession, and removing a job block is not a general fix for a breeding problem.
Mojang’s Java Village & Pillage notes describe villagers’ schedules, beds, workstations, and village detection. Its Bedrock Village & Pillage notes describe villagers visiting job sites and acquiring professions near job-site blocks. These release notes help distinguish work behavior from breeding conditions; they do not document every current breeding mechanic.
What villagers need in order to breed
The practical checks are willingness, suitable food, and valid beds. The Minecraft Wiki villager-farming tutorial and villager reference describe food and beds as central to breeding. The reference also states that jobs and job sites are not required.

- Two adult villagers: Make sure two adults are available to breed.
- Willingness and food: Provide suitable food so the villagers can become willing. Exact food amounts can depend on the game edition and version, so do not assume one quantity applies everywhere.
- A valid bed for the baby: Check that there is an available bed beyond those occupied by the adults. Bed availability can limit the village population, and clearance above the bed can matter.
Why villagers with jobs may not produce a baby
Having jobs does not guarantee breeding; it only means the villagers have professions. Check the breeding setup in this order:
- Confirm that two adult villagers are present and available to breed.
- Make suitable food available so they can become willing.
- Check that a valid, unoccupied bed is available for the baby, with the needed space above it.
- If those checks do not resolve the problem, identify whether you are playing Java or Bedrock and note the game version before investigating pathfinding or village-linking behavior.
Do not remove workstations as a default breeding fix. A workstation affects profession assignment and work behavior, not the core conditions described for breeding.

Does the baby villager get a job?
No. Baby villagers are initially unemployed. A villager acquires a profession later through a job site, which is separate from the conditions for having a baby.

The sources support the core answer for both editions: work behavior and breeding requirements are separate. Mojang’s Java release notes describe schedules and village detection involving beds, job sites, and meeting points; its Bedrock notes describe daytime job-site visits and profession acquisition near job-site blocks. Those short release-note summaries do not establish that every breeding detail or compact breeder design works identically across editions. For a stubborn setup, the edition and game version are useful details to include when seeking a specific diagnosis.
