In both the 2014-era legacy rules and the 2024 rules, the Warlock’s base class grants light armor proficiency or training, not heavy armor. A Warlock can use heavy armor if another applicable character option grants the required proficiency or training; simply putting the armor on is a separate matter with consequences under the rules for the edition you are playing.
What the Warlock class grants
The answer is the same for the base class in both rules versions: a straight Warlock does not gain heavy armor proficiency or training. The class entry labeled “Warlock Legacy” lists light armor proficiency, and the legacy System Reference Document likewise lists “Armor: Light armor.” (D&D Beyond’s legacy Warlock entry; 2014 SRD Warlock.)
The 2024 Warlock class entry states “Armor Training: Light armor.” That is the current class baseline, not a restriction preventing a character from gaining heavy armor training elsewhere. (D&D Beyond’s 2024 Warlock entry.)
Does “can wear” mean the same as “proficient”?
No. A character may be able to put on or possess a suit of heavy armor without having the proficiency or training to use it effectively. The class’s armor entry answers what Warlock levels grant; it does not by itself settle every consequence of wearing armor without the required proficiency.

Those consequences are defined by the armor rules in the edition your table uses. Check that edition’s rulebook before applying a specific penalty; the class entries establish the Warlock’s training but do not provide the full unproficient-armor rule.
How can a Warlock gain heavy armor training?
A Warlock character can get heavy armor proficiency or training from an applicable option outside the base Warlock class. Which options work—and their prerequisites or character-building costs—depends on the edition and the character’s choices. Consult the relevant rules text for the class feature, feat, or other option before relying on it.

Do not assume that a subclass name or reputation is enough to establish proficiency. In particular, verify the exact subclass feature text for the edition in play rather than inferring heavy armor access from the name “Hexblade.”
