Yes, indirectly—but it does not make another console faster by itself. Work done to profile and scale a game for Xbox Series S can uncover bottlenecks or improve shared code and rendering systems. Those gains may carry over to PlayStation, Switch, or PC builds when they use the same code paths. Developers still need to measure and tune each platform separately.
What Series S optimization can carry across platforms
The transferable benefit is primarily the development work: finding where a frame is spending time, reducing unnecessary work, and building settings that can scale across hardware. Whether another console benefits depends on whether it shares the relevant code and whether that code is a bottleneck there.
Profiling can reveal hidden bottlenecks
Microsoft recommends using PIX timing captures and profiling in Xbox Series S console mode. A less powerful target can expose CPU or GPU work that may be less noticeable when a team focuses on Xbox Series X. Once identified, an inefficient shared system may be improved across builds—but the benefit on each console must be confirmed with its own measurements. Microsoft’s GDC 2025 Xbox launch guidance describes the profiling approach.
Scalable rendering can serve multiple devices
Dynamic resolution adjusts a game’s internal rendering resolution within a configured range to help meet a frame-time target. Unreal Engine 5.8 documents support for dynamic resolution on Xbox Series S and X, PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC. A scalable system can therefore be useful across several platforms, though its thresholds and behavior still need to be tuned for each build. Epic’s Unreal Engine documentation explains the feature and its supported platforms.

Why the benefit is not automatic
Consoles differ in CPU and GPU behavior, memory characteristics, platform APIs, and frame-time budgets. A setting that works well on Series S may be wasteful or visually undesirable on another console. A shared codebase does not mean identical hardware or identical optimal settings.
- Frame rate and frame-time stability: Check whether the game consistently meets its target, not just whether it occasionally reaches a peak frame rate.
- Resolution and scaling range: Set and validate the internal-resolution range against each platform’s performance headroom and visual requirements.
- Visual features: Quality settings may need platform-specific tiers rather than a single shared preset.
- CPU and GPU timings: Identify the actual limiting component on the target hardware before changing settings.
- Code paths: Confirm whether a proposed improvement affects shared code or only the Series S implementation.
For Unreal Engine dynamic resolution, the system relies on frame-time budgets and GPU headroom. Epic warns that inaccurate GPU timing information can cause resolution to adjust incorrectly; it also recommends checking visual content at lower screen percentages. A configuration that appears sound on one console should not be assumed to behave correctly on another. Epic’s guidance covers these validation concerns.

One game can use a shared pipeline and different settings
Xbox Series X and Series S can share a development pipeline without sharing every performance setting. Microsoft’s 2026 account describes deliberate tuning across the two tiers, including resolution, frame rate, and feature sets. That is a useful model for cross-platform development: reuse systems where appropriate, but make platform-specific choices where hardware or targets differ. Microsoft’s GDC 2026 overview discusses the Series X|S approach.
Power savings are not the same as a frame-rate increase
Some optimization work targets energy use rather than higher performance. Microsoft reported that Activision’s implementation of Dynamic Power States in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 produced an additional 10–15% power savings in some areas. That is a reported power-saving result, not evidence of a frame-rate improvement on PlayStation, Switch, or another console. Microsoft also describes engine-agnostic energy guidance in its Xbox Sustainability Toolkit article.

What the public evidence establishes
Public guidance supports the idea that profiling a Series S build can help teams find performance opportunities, and that scalable rendering methods can be used on multiple platforms. It does not quantify a case where Series S optimization itself made a named PlayStation or Switch game run faster. Treat cross-platform gains as possible when relevant code or techniques are shared, not as a guaranteed consequence of developing for Series S.
Microsoft’s detailed Xbox Series S optimization recommendations are limited to Xbox developer-program members under NDA. The public information therefore does not provide a complete account of those recommendations or a measured cross-console uplift.
