Which PS5 Digital Edition models support a disc drive?
Sony lists the detachable PS5 Disc Drive as compatible with PS5 consoles in the CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups. The console’s “Digital Edition” name alone does not confirm compatibility; check the model number printed on the console and compare it with Sony’s compatibility and setup guidance before ordering.
If your model number is outside those groups, Sony’s cited instructions do not establish it as compatible. Do not assume that a generic external USB optical drive can add disc support: Sony documents its detachable PS5 Disc Drive, which attaches directly to the console.
What to know before installing the drive
- Internet is required for initial pairing. Sony says an internet connection is required to pair the disc drive and PS5 console during setup. Its guidance does not say that an ongoing connection is required just to use an attached drive.
- Prepare the console safely. Shut it down, unplug its cables, let it cool, and place it on a soft cloth on a flat surface before beginning.
- Keep the parts you remove. Sony’s installation steps involve removing the relevant cover and short horizontal stand feet. Keep these parts if you may later use the console without the drive attached.

Follow Sony’s instructions for your specific model; the official page includes both setup and removal steps. The general preparation is:

- Reconnect the console and complete the initial pairing with an internet connection available.

Sony’s PS5 CFI-70XX Quick Start Guide states that disc-based games can be played when a separately sold disc drive is installed. That guidance supports disc-based games; it does not establish movie playback or support for other disc formats.
