How to Use a PS2-Style Controller Layout with Games on Steam

Steam Input lets you remap a recognized controller to a familiar PS2-style arrangement, but the right assignments depend on each game’s support and prompts.

You can make a Steam controller feel closer to a familiar PS2 arrangement by remapping its controls in Steam Input. There is no universal Steam preset documented as “PS2,” so assign each control to the action the game expects, then test the layout in that game. Mapping changes button assignments; it does not make a game support controllers if it does not already.

First, check whether the game supports a controller

Steam distinguishes between Full and Partial Controller Support. A game with Full Controller Support can be downloaded, launched, and played using only a controller. With Partial Controller Support, a controller may work during gameplay while setup or menus still require a mouse and keyboard. You can play any Steam game in Big Picture mode, but that does not mean every game accepts controller input. Steam Support explains controller support in Big Picture mode.

Steam Input can map a physical control to a gamepad action, or, with flexible input styles such as Button Pad and Directional Pad, to a keyboard or mouse command. If the game supports gamepad input, use gamepad actions. If it does not, keyboard-and-mouse bindings may be a workaround, but they may not reproduce analog movement or camera control naturally. Steam cautions that “Gamepad-only input styles will only work with gamepad supported games.” See Steam Controller configuration and troubleshooting guidance.

Build a familiar layout in Steam Input

  1. Connect your controller and check that Steam recognizes it. Start Steam and confirm the game accepts controller input or is identified as having controller support. Steam lists Xbox, DualShock 4, DualSense, and Nintendo Switch Pro controllers as supported in Big Picture; third-party controllers often work, but Steam does not officially support them. Check Steam’s controller support details.
  2. Open the game’s controller layout or configuration in Steam. The exact menu labels and route can vary by Steam client version, so use the current controls shown in your client rather than relying on a fixed click path.
  3. Assign each control to a game action. Map the face buttons, shoulder buttons, triggers, sticks, and directional control according to the game’s prompts and the arrangement you prefer. A PS2-style arrangement is a personal mapping, not a Steam-documented universal preset. For a gamepad-supported game, choose gamepad commands; for a game without controller support, consider keyboard or mouse commands only if they suit the action.
  4. Save or apply the layout, launch the game, and test it. Check every button and direction in gameplay and menus. Adjust assignments to match the game’s prompts and actual behavior; layouts do not behave identically across games.

Original PS2 controller or familiar button arrangement?

These are separate questions. Steam Input can remap a controller that Steam recognizes, but Steam’s support information does not confirm that a particular USB adapter will make an original PS2 controller work, nor does it provide a universal PS2 layout preset. If you plan to use original PS2 hardware, confirm that the adapter and controller are recognized by your system and Steam before spending time configuring a layout.

Troubleshoot a layout that does not work

  • Check the game’s controller support. A gamepad mapping will not work as intended if the game does not support gamepad input. A Partial Controller Support game may also need keyboard or mouse input for setup or menus.
  • Test the Steam Overlay. Steam says the overlay is important to Steam Controller functionality. Try opening it with the controller’s Steam button or Shift+Tab, and make sure the overlay is enabled.
  • Try a community configuration. If your custom layout fails, test a community layout for that game, then adjust it to your preferred arrangement.
  • Check for software conflicts. Steam recommends disabling conflicting programs as a test and restarting the Steam client.

These checks and suggestions come from Steam’s configuration troubleshooting guidance.
