The upload itself does not stop a YouTube broadcast. Whether the new video can join the queue without interruption depends on whether the VPS playback software can update its active queue without reloading the source or reconnecting the encoder. YouTube receives the encoder’s outgoing stream; it does not play files directly from your VPS.
Why uploading a file does not automatically add it to the live stream
A VPS playlist is a local input to an encoder. The encoder reads that input, turns it into a live audio/video feed, and sends the feed to YouTube over its configured ingest connection. YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guidance describes RTMPS as RTMP carried through TLS; YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance describes an encoder sending media playlists and segments to YouTube. Neither workflow means YouTube can see or read your VPS’s media folder.
So there are three separate events: upload the file, make it available to the playback queue, and have the active encoder play it. The first can happen without affecting the encoder. The second depends on the software; the third happens only if the active source recognizes the change and reaches the new item.
What determines whether the active playlist can change live
The VPS panel or playlist application
Some applications may provide a documented queue or playlist control that accepts additions while a stream is running. Others may load a playlist only when a source or encoder starts. The answer for a web panel or automation script therefore depends on its product, version, and configuration. Check its documentation for live queue updates or reload behavior rather than assuming that an edited playlist will be noticed.

FFmpeg concat lists
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation says it reads a text list of files and processes them one after another. It does not promise that an already-running process will reread changes to that list. Treat a list opened by a running FFmpeg process as fixed unless your exact workflow provides and has been tested with a live-reload mechanism, such as a watcher or API-driven queue.
Concat inputs also need compatible streams, codecs, and time bases. If a newly uploaded video differs from the existing items, FFmpeg may fail to concatenate it as intended. Normalize or transcode the file if necessary, and test that process before changing a production playlist.

OBS media and VLC sources
OBS supports media sources and VLC video sources. A VLC source can play multiple media items and requires VLC to be installed. But playlist support alone does not establish that edits to a playlist will be applied seamlessly during an active broadcast. Confirm the behavior of your source and OBS version, and test whether an update reloads the source or affects the outgoing feed.
How to add a video while minimizing interruption risk
- Identify what controls playback. Find the VPS application, encoder, and active source or queue. Do not assume that a file-manager upload changes the encoder’s input.
- Upload the file and check access. Confirm that the file is in the expected media directory and readable by the operating-system user running the encoder.
- Check the media before queuing it. Confirm that its streams, codecs, and time bases are compatible with the existing items if your workflow uses FFmpeg concat. Convert or normalize it if needed.
- Use a documented live queue control if available. Prefer the application’s queue or playlist interface over manually editing a file that may have been read only at process startup.
- Verify what happens when you add an item. In a test stream or other safe environment, determine whether the player takes the new item, reloads its source, or restarts the encoder. A changed local playlist does not prove that YouTube ingest stayed connected.
- Plan a controlled change if live updates are unsupported. Test the restart or handoff procedure in advance. Restarting or replacing the encoder may interrupt delivery; a successful upload alone is no guarantee of an uninterrupted broadcast.
- Protect the YouTube ingest settings. Keep the stream key private and use the ingest protocol and URL configured in YouTube Live Control Room.

Before relying on a workflow for a live channel, compare the properties that affect safe updates:

- Live changes: Can you add an item while the encoder is running, and is that behavior explicitly documented?
- Connection impact: Does the change reload the source or reconnect the encoder to YouTube?
- Media compatibility: Does the workflow accept your formats, or require compatible codecs and normalized files?
- Persistence: Does the queue survive an encoder restart?
- Testability: Can you verify the complete update procedure without risking your production broadcast?
An FFmpeg concat input and OBS media or VLC sources are possible playback approaches, but their documented features do not by themselves guarantee seamless live edits. Choose based on the exact software’s tested behavior, not merely on whether it supports playlists.

Does YouTube read a playlist stored on my VPS?
No. The encoder sends the live feed to YouTube; the VPS playlist is a local playback input.
Will editing an FFmpeg concat list update a running stream?
FFmpeg’s documentation does not promise that an active process rereads edits to its concat list. Use a tested, documented live-update mechanism or plan a controlled encoder change.
